My boyfriend and I just got back from backpacking around Tunisia for a couple weeks. The Hotel Marhala is just one of the many mid-range/budget hotels we stayed in during our time their. For the price we were very happy with our stay at the Marhala in Houmt Souk. We stayed for 2 nights in a ground floor room (in the long ago past these rooms apparently housed the merchants animals such as donkeys). The room was simple but had everything one needs for independent no-frills travelling. The shower was hot, sheets were crisp & clean, breakfast was included (albeit just baguette, jam and coffee/tea) and it was in a great central location. The staff at the front desk were smiley and friendly and did their best to help in English. There was a small bar that served beer in the evening and a lovely courtyard to relax in after a day of touring around the island. Some of the downsides... the paint/plaster on the walls was chipping off and got all over our bags and clothes and the sounds did carry a bit between rooms. All in all would stay there again and would recommend it to anyone travelling simply on a budget.
