I have only recently started to review trips in this forum but have to say that I wish that I had listened to some of the opinions regarding this hotel! To put expectations into context in the last 2 years we have stayed in other hotels deemed to be of 5 star beach quality such as the Bahia Principe Costa Adeje, Oceania Club in Halkidiki and the Sierra in Sharm- check the reviews for these when the hotel management at the Minos argue that people are making the incorrect comparision of what a 5* beach resort is.
The hotel on the surface has a 5* appearance- the lobby, pool areas and the diamond class rooms are good, however if you scratch the surface the cracks are clear to see even with these!
We booked a diamond class junior suite with jacuzzi, I soon found out via trip advisor that this may not mean diamond class all inclusive and sure enough had to pay 400 euros at the hotel to upgrade- was it worth it, well no not for what we got but at least we were able to access the veranda bar (which is included for diamond class only) and didn't have to sit through the kids disco every night at the seaside bar (this is the only entertainment by the way!). We were given a guide to what was included in the diamond all inclusive which should have included international branded spirits at all bars but only actually meant the veranda bar and only if you ask- tip- get the menu on the first night- anything with a star is included- we took pictures on our i-phones so that we could remember as getting hold of the secret menus was difficult (you can get Jonnie Walker Red Label, Cutty Sark, Gordon's, baileys etc in the Veranda bar if you are diamond class and ask for it!), so in a nutshell I would upgrade if you like to sit in a nice bar however don't expect this to get you better surface or a better dining experience!
As for the dining experience for diamond class- well it pretty much is no different to premium class; you are supposed to get more access to restaurants with priority reservations however every time we tried to book there was some other event occuring which would incur an additional charge or the restaurants were only open on other evenings/booked up already, in the end we got the same as if we had not upgraded (1 dinner and 1 lunch at Laguna- both OK) and yet another buffet at veranda bar; we also attempted to eat at the Asian Restaurant (part of the main restaurant for 4 nights a week as chinese corner) but after getting our starters and then one main and then nothing else for 90 mins we walked out.
I pretty much concur with the other reviewers regarding the food, it is OK but the service is lacking, dirty tables, no knifes/forks- having to find these and set your own table, struggling to get wine with dinner, greedy guests (Russians in the main) filling plates to the top, no chance of any Pizza or Grill (huge demand, always empty), basically I completely understand buffet all inclusive eating having done it many times- but this is not a 5* buffet experience- I have seen better 3*.
After dinner, if you are diamond class you can drink in veranda bar- this is nice but don't forget to snap the menu so you can ask for an half decent drink! Do not go down to seaside bar or tropical bar (says selection of cocktails but it is just one a day and is horrid compared to cocktails in the veranda bar), down here it is dark, full of kids and a distinct lack of holiday atmosphere (I am not even an entertainment fan- good job as they had all walked out the week before we got there, but good luck entertaining the kids if you have them!).
As for appearances; the pools may look nice but in reality I only saw 1 clean pool- the quiet adult pool near the rooms with private pools- this is a nice area and you can get tea/soft drinks and beer from this bar so go here! All the other pools have a scummy line around them and dirt in all the tile joins- they look like they have not been cleaned in a while!
Room cleanliness is good in that they come in everyday and mop around etc.. however we only braved our jacuzzi once on the balcony as when I got out I was covered in 3 lumps of long hair- all different colours to mine!! We didn't go in again!
I could go on and on and on; we laughed in the end as you could hear brits getting together on a daily basis and just having a general moan about the place, you have to laugh and they all seemed to in the end but it isn't fair when people have paid a lot of money and expect to be arriving to and experiencing something really nice!
Staff try and try but fail as the place is so understaffed, management strut around bringing nothing to the party and not listening to any feedback from customers.
Oh just one other thing, don't expect a swift check in, even with just one other small group in front of us it took 40 mins!
Would I recommend I stay at the Minos?? Erm....no! Save your money on the upgrade and head to the No Name bar in Milatos every night- just great and so friendly! (walk along the so called jogging path which is in reality a dirt track into the village) or better still do not book the stay in the first place, if you have already, try to make the most of it and laugh it off if you can but don't bother raising your concerns with the management team- they won't listen!
Go diamond class- the premium rooms are in the worst positions
