“Great position, building feels in need of a revamp”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 2, 2013

This hotel is located in an old tuna fishery and has an atmospheric position on the waterfront with a pretty courtyard. The complex is part hotel and part condominium. It could be very nice with a bit of money spent but currently feels distinctly tired - it's not a 4* hotel as things stand - 3* at best and it felt expensive for what you get. The reception area is unremarkable and the room was relatively large but felt rather bare and slightly careworn. Other minus points included a distinct smell of drains in the courtyard that came and went, a nearby bar that featured tone-deaf karaoke-ists caterwauling until 4am (the hotel admitted this was an on-going problem) and food that was at best average, which is unforgivable in Italy. Furthermore, I don't expect to have to get my own coffee out of a machine for breakfast anywhere in Italy outside of a youth hostel. Furthermore, the town in which the hotel is located is decidedly unremarkable and uninteresting. Fortunately Erice, which is very charming if stuffed with tourists, is about 20 minutes away (above actually - it looms over the place) by car (albeit on very narrow twisty roads). What saves the hotel is the pool complex. This is the hotel's best feature, being shared with the condominium. It's large, clean and nicely landscaped, with a great view out towards Monte Cofano. It also features a private bathing platform accessed via a short path down through the garden from the pool, from which you can swim in a very clear sea with plenty of decent snorkelling.

Something Fishy in Sicily

We first reviewed the Tonnaria di Bonagio (“TB”) on its own website and were quite impressed. The disadvantage of its isolation appeared to be offset by the range of facilities offered on-site.

Having now been to the “Tonnaria di Bonagio Resort”, it is obvious that the website is highly inaccurate and misleading.

The following are direct quotes from that website followed by my comments on their accuracy

1. It is not a “Resort”; it is a run-down hotel in need of substantial upgrading.
2. “the complex covers the entire area of the historical fishing village.” Simply not true.
3. “traditional workshops offering crafts and local culinary specialities.” Shut or non-existent.
4. “pool area that offers direct access to the sea”. Not true. There was water in the pool but no other facilities. The sea was at the other end of the hotel with no visible direct access from the pool area.
5. “diving centre” - none found and no trace of any on-site.
6. “bar” - shut.
7. “restaurant” - shut.
8. “at the wellbeing oasis qualified specialists care for our guests.” No centre or oasis existed, the information sheet in the room said that some outside facilities could be provided by prior arrangement.
9. “rooms are furnished with valuable furniture.” Untrue. The furniture was basic and needed refurbishment, as did the soft furnishings. After a struggle. I managed to open the window and shutters – both needed repair.

Our party of two couples arrived at the TB site mid-afternoon on Friday 24th May. Our first difficulty was in identifying the TB hotel. There was absolutely no signage to indicate where it was even when we were outside it. There was one sign when inside the courtyard that pointed towards “Reception”. It was so unclear that I had to ask a maid in one of the rooms exactly where to go.

On entering the TB hotel, it smelt as though it had been shut all winter and only just re-opened. It was musty and damp. All the facilities were shut and thus there was nowhere even to obtain a cup of coffee. Being polite, the décor was rustic and simple and had evidently not been renewed for some time.

We went to our room (no help offered with cases) which was almost twice the cost of that of our friends. The only difference between them was that ours had a balcony but the interior furniture and furnishings were even more dilapidated. Both rooms smelt of damp and were basic in the extreme.

I would rate the TB hotel as two stars at best even were it fully open.

We told Reception (two girls who deserved to be at a better hotel) that we could not stay and had not even unpacked. The hotel did not match its advertising or star rating. The facilities were almost all closed or unavailable and we did not think that we would even be able to sleep in apparently damp beds, let alone enjoy ourselves.

After some discussion, it was agreed that our pre-payment would be refunded in full. Our guests’ reservation, it was alleged, had been made through a different agent and could not be refunded. We expressed surprise as both bookings had been made through the same travel agent. We were so anxious to escape and find a normal hotel that we did not press the matter at the time.

On our return home, we tried strenuously for a month to obtain the refund we had been promised and also one for our friends’ room (which we also paid for). The hotel refused outright to honour its earlier promise or consider any refund at all. They referred us to “all the satisfied comments on Trip Advisor”. When we looked, there were a few but many also were not impressed. The site says the hotel is near/in Erice. Again this is simply not true the distance from the hotel to Erice is half an hour’s drive. The Tonnara di Bonnagio Hotel is in the middle of nowhere and there are no other facilities nearby.

You have been warned/

Nice hotel in an old Tina factory. Spacious rooms with balcony. Service is ok but not superb. Nice terrace for breakfast and swimmingpool near the rocky seaside (no beach). Some nice restaurants around.

we stayed here one week with a family and booked it via RCI. Resort was very difficult to find since only sign from "main" street is old and you can hardly see the letters....
The resort itself was ok with a pool and a nice view from it.
We did not eat at the hotel restaurant 'cause the menu was short and children were not very keen on it. It looked good and a little bit high-priced. There is a couple of restaurant just in walking distance and they had pretty good seafood. When we asked at the reception if there any pizzeria near by, they said "no, you need to go 20 km to next city- in SIcily!? Anyway after a couple of days we found out that there is a take away pizzeria within a walking distance and a restaurant serving pizas about 2 km from the resoirt.
People were friendly but there was only one woman speaking english at the reception. The other ones could not even tell where to take the trashes....
There is a small shop at the resort but I never figured out what for.
Outside of the resort you can find a small bar/kiosk where you can have beer of´r wine in the evening. They also have some live performances which was very positive.
The area is quite poor and there is not that much to see if you don't drive out from there so it's better to have a car,

Stayed at the Tonnara with family,we were a group of 4 adults and 2 children. Overall the place is up to the standard portrayed in the reviews found on the internet. They were very helpful at reception,Cristina and Salvatore, especially when there was a misunderstanding during the booking, they made right sure to make up for this mishap.
All in all I would recommend this place for a relaxing holiday as d pool and sea nearby makes it easy to stay and have fun around without the need to travel. Very good place for self catering and child friendly

We had a wonderful stay in the hotel FN Tonnara Di Bonagio Resort. Positive points are: helpful staff, well maintained rooms, nice, large and well maintainerd swimmingpool, very good restaurant (chef), great that you can take breakfast as well as dinner outdoors, fantastic that you have direct access to the see to go for a swim!
When we asked at the reception if they could recommend us a similar hotel nearby/in Palermo, the management advised us the Splendid Hotel La Torre in Mondello and indeed, also there we had a very good experience ... well maintained room, very good and friendly/helpful service of the staff, good, well maintained and large swimmingpool, direct access to the see, ... and a nice price reduction due to the advice of the management of FN Tonnara Di Bonagio Resort!

Overall I was disappointed when I first arrived here, but quickly came to like it. To clarify why I was disappointed, I'm used to other European and North American Hotels. On arrival the outside of the hotel resembles an old fort or prison with a tower in one corner, but once past the front 'gates' you enter a Mediterranean world of courtyards and gardens.

Past the front gates you find an wide open square which serves as the hotels main courtyard. Front desk reception, the restaurant, gift shop, and even the chapel are all found in this courtyard. Navigation around the hotel was quick and painless. There is a nice large outdoor pool, and a very attractive garden in another courtyard along the way to the pool. The entire outdoor establishment is very attractive and well maintained. The hotel also has a bit of history because the 'tower' has an old WW2 Machine Gun next built into the bottom, and also another 'pillbox' on the beach.

The rooms themselves are all different. For the most part me and my team all had different set ups, with some similarities. For instance some rooms had air conditioning while others had none. All the rooms had a small 15inch CRT TV, but I saw no point in trying to watch tv. The beds are very stiff and hard, and so far all the beds I've slept in in Sicily have been much the same.

The breakfast buffet is essentially a buffet with lots of breads, juices, some scrambled eggs, and Italian style bacon. Team mates reported the restaurant was excellent, but I was too busy checking out some of the family run restaurants next door.

The hotel is well located in the country side about 5 mins drive from Trapani, and about 30mins from Erice. The town of Bonagia itself seems like its run down, but here is some excellent family owned restaurants. Within 5 mins walking and driving there is also some good Pizzeria.

As I said before, all the rooms seemed to be different. In my case I had one room which had a day bed, kitchen table, a hallway which lead into the bathroom and also served as a kitchen, and a bedroom with a double bed. The room was clean, and as was the bathroom. Appliances were a bit strange, as I had to shut off the hot water tank to use the kitchen hot tops. There was also a mini fridge and sink in the kitchen. They supplied a good amount of cooking ware in the cuboards.

The scenery and food is worth staying in Bonagia, but otherwise isn't much better or worse than most hotels.

Room Tip: Ask for air conditioning, as not all rooms are the same.
