“Eat like a king, sleep like a baby”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 26, 2012

We just spent 6 nights at this lovely family hotel. Our room was simple but well organized and the bed was really comfortable. We had a good sized balcony looking over the mountains ( Room 5). It is run by a wonderful, warm hearted family - daughter Katrin Maria and son Stephan (also the cook) speak excellent English. They couldn't have been more welcoming and helpful. The quality of the food and the preparation is outstanding! The previous reviewer is absolutely correct. Stephan cares passionately about food and cooking and chooses the best local ingredients. Breakfast is a full buffet spread and includes several kinds of fresh locals breads and rolls and croissants as well as six home made jams, six different juices (homemade elderberry), lovely huge orange yolked eggs, freshly made espresso drinks..... Dinner is a special occasion - very fine dining in a cosy, friendly, gracious setting. We were there during mushroom season and enjoyed mushrooms every evening that had been gathered by Stephen who is an avid mushroomer. There is a big salad buffet with a number of cooked and raw vegetables, a cheese buffet with local cheese. We also had a wonderful large breaded mushroom with preislberries every evening as a starter. Then there is the first course - pasta, soup, light as air dumplings, then a meat course, then dessert - everything prepared to the highest standard. This was such a treat for us and we felt pampered in every way. This was our 13th visit to the South Tyrol and the best food yet! We also liked the location of the hotel - about 5 minutes walk above the train station and well situated for many beautiful walks.

Hotel Ameiser Hof located on a quiet cul-de-sac not far from the center of Callalbo proved to be a pleasant surprise both for the unusual quality of its food and the professionalism of the family that owns and operates it. Both the quality and quantity of the breakfasts and dinners was remarkable as well as the elegance of the dining area set with white linen table clothes and napkins. For breakfast there was an excellent choice of fresh and dried fruits, nuts, and cereals as well eggs, bread, jam, cheese, meat and yogurt, far more than one would find in a four- or even five-star hotel. Best of all, much of it is locally sourced and organic. The arrival of dinner hour at Ameiser Hof is especially anticipated because the cook, one of the proprietors' sons who is a professionally trained chef with extensive international experience, is highly inventive in reinterpreting traditional dishes, making them somewhat lighter and more subtle while always using the freshest ingredients. One day after a morning rain he returned from the nearby forests carrying fresh mushrooms that he used to make an outstanding risotto. (The dinner menu is posted early in morning and the owners are more than willing to make changes to satisfy individual dietary requirements.)

It should also be mentioned that the children speak several different languages at a very high level and that the entire family demonstrates the greatest solicitude to please its guests. Furthermore, though not mentioned in the literature, an excellent free wifi connection is available throughout the hotel. I strongly recommend making Hotel Ameiser Hof part of your holiday plans; I certainly intend plan to return there.

Room Tip: One side of the hotel faces the huge mountain peaks, which obviously has the best views. All of the...
