My wife and I stayed at the Blue Haven Hotel in Tobago from 05 March till 19 March 2009 on an All Inclusive basis. We very much enjoyed our holiday and would certainly return to this relaxing and quirky hotel.
When we first arrived, we had a walk round and thought we had made the wrong decision, the pool is small, there were no sunshades and the environment (and the room) seemed "tired". We had dinner which was very good, then a couple of drinks and slept on our choice. With the sun up, we investigated the next day and decided the location more than makes up for some peeling paint. A couple of days later some sun shades arrived, they were most welcome as this addressed one of our main issues.
It was not a problem for us but there are a lot of steep steps in the hotel which is built on the edge of a hill, just something to be aware of if you have a problem with hills and steps.
The food is good, presented in an unfussy manner with a very good choice each evening. The menu is different each day and although some dishes were repeated, we did not have the same menu twice in the 2 weeks of our holiday and this is certainly a plus point.
The hotel is not 5 star, probably not 4 star either by UK standards but I do not believe this is actually relevant to the overall experience. The staff are great, very friendly and helpful, also taking the time to learn our names which gives the personal touch.
The hotel could easily be improved by some fairly basic maintenace and cleaning. As an example, broken lightbulbs in public areas / toilets could be replaced. Toilet paper in public toilets could be replaced by the cleaning staff as opposed to allowing it to run out. On the positive side, if I raised an issue it was fixed but maybe some of these things should not require a prompt from a guest before action is taken ?
So, we had a great time and returned relaxed and rested after 2 excellent weeks. We would certainly return to the Blue Haven Hotel on our next visit to Tobago.
