“Birthday dinner at Castara Retreats -- phenomenal!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 8, 2013

Based on the glowing recommendations of other tripadvisor users, I booked my boyfriend's birthday dinner at Castara Retreats. It did not disappoint! We arrived for sunset, and the restaurant has a beautiful ambiance overlooking the Castara bay. The cocktails were delicious -- I think we tried every single one! -- as was our grilled fish and chocolate mousse. Kenny and Patricia both came by to say hello, were both very friendly, and even provided a complimentary piece of chocolate cake with a candle. To top it off, we spotted fireflies buzzing about in the nearby foliage, a first for both of us. It was a wonderful evening and a wonderful restaurant. I would highly recommend to anyone staying in Tobago to make a visit here.

We loved eating here and Kenny and Patricia make you so welcome, I think we tried nearly everything on the menu and couldn't fault any of it.

“Brilliant food, service, atmosphere and views”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 11, 2013

Brilliant food, service, atmosphere and views. Get there before the sun sets and watch the sun drop down behind the sea. Amazing. A 180 view of the sea is yours, with the restaurant set high up into the hillside (with Castara Retreats cottages set around/above it). This is very much a no shoes, relaxed place, run by a local guy called Kenny and his Venezuelan/Italian wife, both delightful, with Wesley on the bar, a man who knows how to mix drinks. The kitchen is open to the restaurant (on one side) and the restarant is all open to the elements (though it has a roof!) making the experience more special. Call ahead to make sure they have space (and to save you the hike up the hillside).

Onto the food. Wow. We had tuna steaks, caught by the local fishermen, which were perfectly cooked by Patricia, and the largest we have ever seen. Both of us couldn't manage to finish them! All for 100TT$. Mains are all 100TT$, starters and puds are about 40$ or 50$. Value wise, I doubt you'll find anything better on the island for an evening meal. For starters we had escabeche which was good but not stellar. For puds - chocolate mousse to die for, made with chocolate from the famed Tobago cocoa plantation.

Service throughout is perfect - don't expect someone to be floating around watching your table the entire time, it's not that sort of place. Also this isn't a formal place, so don't go expecting starched napkins and tablecloths.

If you stay in Castara you'll probably come across Kenny. He manages a number of the apartments in the village. He has returned to the village to live and work, and is a fount of information on the Castara area. You probably won't want to eat here every evening if you're staying for a while in the local area - they have one menu for 3 days of the week, and another for the other 3 days, and then close on the 7th day, with no daily specials. Also note that this is dinner only, not lunch - if you want lunch with an amazing view and great service see one of my other reviews here... Kings Bay Cafe in Delaford/Speyside. But for dinner, this place nails the Castara vibe well. Thank you Kenny and Patricia, and good luck in this venture, you deserve to succeed.

“Delicious”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 3, 2013

I ate at this resto twice while in Castara
The service was top notch
I can honestly say the grilled fish was the best I've ever had. I grew up eating fish so I am rather picky when it comes to seafood
The prices here run a little higher than other establishments in town but they offer more of a fine dining experience
Finally, the view cannot be beat

“Nice views from the restaurant”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 28, 2013

Positives :
- Nice views from the restaurant overlooking Castara bay / village
- Manager replaced a drink that he himself found to be sub-standard

Negatives :
- Bit of a hike in the heat to get up the path to it
- Food a bit bland (fish cake was tasteless) and perhaps trying a bit too hard
