“perfectly located for a trip to Sossusvlei dunes”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 30, 2010

This place is perfectly situated being only a few k's down the road from the main gates leading to the dunes at Sesriem as well as the sister hotel sossusvlei lodge and the engen petrol station.
self catering is probably not the best choice when travelling solo however the helpful receptionist sorted me out with al lthat i needed including a large plate of bbq meat and i happily tucked into eland and lamb chops for my first evening meal!.
the camp can also easily organise meals across at the lodge - full all in buffet meal for just over £20 - very welcome after a day trekking up and down the dunes!!
worked out c£70 per night so not cheap but relatively extremely good value compared to the other hotels in the area.
best bit was the view looking directly out onto the local desert and the wildlife - jackals et al - wandering about at dusk
despite the rudimentary appearance on the outside - concrete and canvas - all mod cons inside incl A/C and one of the best showers i have ever experienced - certainly not the normal "dribble" i ususally get!!.
all in all would happily recommend to others who are not expecting 5 star luxury - the view and the facilities more than make up for this!.

A friend and I recently did a two-week driving holiday through Namibia.
I found Desert Camp at Sossusvlei amazing. Only 20 chalets out in the desert. excellent accommodation resaonably priced. The absolute stillness and blackness at night and the jackals furtively looking for scaps, all made it special. The jackals did come back much later and tipped over the dustbins so do be careful what you throw in them!

We spent two memorable nights in the desert camp. The camp was very well designed and secluded. The view was stunning and we really felt we were in the middle of nowhere. The rooms were comfortable but quite dark. We had to have dinner at the sossusvlei lodge down the road which was a bit inconvenient, but we were treated to some stunning stir frys and a selection of barbecued meat ranging from ostrich and Zebra to Beef and Chicken. All the staff were very nice and helpful and helped make our visit thoroughly enjoyable. We looked at other hotels in sossusvlei and we can comfortabally say this is the best one in the area.

Thank you for the lovely review. Desert Camp indeed is 'most amazing'. Please note that it is a self catering establishment and guests do not HAVE to eat at Sossusvlei Lodge. There are various options:- 1.bring your own and prepare at the grill or kitchenette at your unit (most eating and cooking utensils are available) 2.order fresh supplies daily to prepare (list at reception) 3.get food supplies or take-away meals at the Sossus Oasis Fuel & Service Station(5km down the road) 4.order a private chef to prepare the meals for you (at reception) 5.eat at Sossusvlei Lodge (5km down the road)
We look forward to welcoming you back to Desert Camp and to other fine Taleni Africa properties!

Very well located regarding the Sesriem park.
Perfect for barbecues (kitchenette with sink, stove, fridge and barbecue facilities)
Be aware of the cape foxes, which are very use to the people and get very close to the rooms, although they don't seem dangerous, they woke us up in the midlle of the night when they came to snatch the rubbish bag out of the bin that stands close to the room.

Wow! The drive to the Desert Camp has been long and dusty, but most certainly worth every kilometer.

Everything is neat and tidy. The layout is perfect and well planned. We neede the wheelchair accessable unit, and accessable it certainly was. (Most places says "off course we're wheelchair friendly", which usually ends at where they smile at you upon arrival and then don't bother how you get up the flight of stairs or maneuvre in the bathroom).

The food and service at the nearby lodge, where we had our meals, was perfect. The surroundings is so tranquil and everything makes you feel comfortable and you can let all the stress melt away!

What a view out of the swimming pool, certainly a gem. With-in 4km from the gate and you can't miss it, the tented set-up is excellent, seen it elsewhere in Africa and a winner. Outdoor kitchen and braai facilities is looking out over the spectacular views, mountains, though we didn't see any game a jackal came round the evening.

I cannot recommend this highly enough. It was one of the most beautiful places I have ever stayed in. Its one of those places which make you run around all excited taking photos when you arrive because it is so lovely! The tented lodges are exquisitely decorated and spaced far enough apart that you have your own private uninterrupted view of paradise. The whole place makes you slow down, forget any stress and appreciate the environment around you. The staff are genuinely friendly and helpful. The outdoor kitchen is a lovely touch – I remember cooking dinner watching the stunning mountain range in front of me turn red, then waking up in the morning and seeing the dawn infiltrate the sky as I made a cup of tea. Each night the sandy ground in front of your veranda is raked so that in the morning you can spot all the tracks of noctural visitors you didn’t know about, which is a nice touch. The camp has a lovely pool (which is bliss after a hot day in the dunes) and a cool wooden outside bar. It's self catering but will provide a wide range of BBQ packs (each of the lodges comes with a private braai as well as the kitchen) or its sister hotel the Sossusvlei Lodge will welcome you for dinner if you don’t fancy cooking. Its competitive price makes it one of the best mid-range options in the area (however even if money was no object I’d still prefer to stay here over the big fancy hotels). Before I went I worried that I wasn't going to be inside the park and I wouldn't get to the Dune 45 for sunrise etc etc. Sunrise is a circus - avoid it at all costs and go an hour later when the light for photography is better and you'll have the place to yourself - better still, go in the afternoon. As for Desert Camp? Don't look anywhere else. Book right now - you won't regret it!!!
