“Fantastic”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 7, 2011

Few hotels have completely understood the best concept for frequent travellers, but Schloss Elmau has. The personal attention, the beautiful hotel and surroundings, the extraordinary spa, it is all as you wish it to be. Not posh, not overdone, but in style and with sincerity. One actually does not want to recommend this place to others, but keep this secret to oneself ...

thank you, schloss elmau, for the wonderful time we always spend at your hotel! elmau hotel is probably the best hotel i've ever stayed at. its rooms are huge, all wooden, magnificently decorated and extremely clean. modern and highest standards, wifi in the rooms, top modern bathrooms and all latest technology. gorgeous setting, the quietest hotel i've ever seen, set in the fantastic bavarian alps! great great great hotel, superb and huge breakfast buffet, good food. the largest and the most beautiful spa ever, a separate house only for spa with many many pools, saunas, hammams, massages, ... just incredible, this hotel! you can take mountainbikes to discover the marvellous nature and two nearby mountain lakes. at night (and at all times) you smell the treas and the forest, and the only "noise" you hear is the singing of the birds. every detail in this hotel is fabulous, even the parking looks very nice, decorated with palms and colors. i will certainly be coming back as often as possible. fantastic luxury hotel with very very friendly staff and great cultural events!

the historical Schloss Elmau lies in the middle of a wonderful fir forest surrounded by the snowy german alps. the rooms are quite big and very clean.
there are several restaurants - all of them delicious and reasonably priced.
This hotel has got the biggest spa-area I've ever seen located over three levels and what could be more relaxing than swimming in the heated pool and enjoying the extremely fresh air?

It started out as something that my grandfather called "elevated youth-hostel style" to a real 5*resort where one can also take business friends. Prices followed the ambition but I have to say that it is worth it. Hiking is great from here, cross-country skiing as well. Rooms could be a little bit larger so if you can afford it take the next higher category for a long-stay vacation.

We have been there last year for a few days. This time it was just a 24h Trip and we enjoyed it almost as much as a week of sunshine. We spent most of our time at the SPA pool, even had breakfast there. The Spa itself is beautiful, one of the best in Germany.
This time we had dinner at the Italian Restaurant. That was nice, especially due to the staff. The food could have been better, but as the food is quite good in the other restaurants of the Hotel we assume it was just one of these days.
I can highly recommend it to anyone - with or without children.

I used the opportunity of a meeting in Garmisch-Partenkirchen to day-visit all the important hotels in the area, such as "Das Kranzbach", "Alpenhof Murnau" and Grand Hotel Sonnenbichl". The "Schloss Elmau" was the best, even if not perfect.

Kranzbach and Schloss Elmau are practically neighbours on a beautiful hill at the end of a private road (€ 3 toll). Both are modern, innovative design hotels in the 5*-segment completely free-standing for miles of meadows around and both with a high emphasis on wellness. Both hotels are well cordoned off to day visitors, otherwise they would be overrun. But they are very peaceful and relatively exclusive. The Schloss Elmau has an exceptionally good programme for cultural events and lectures, as well as the biggest programme for sports activities I have seen anywhere. In addition, the food is better than at the Kranzbach, although both are NOT gourmet revelations.

I preferred the interior design of the Kranzbach over the Schloss Elmau. The latter has this modern-reductionist "please all" interior that just doesn't connect with the location and could be anywhere. In the Kranzbach there is an appealing public area with colourful, yet cozy design. There used to be one of the best cigar bars ever, but it was recently closed due to the general smoking ban.

Anyhow, both hotels are innovative products, stimulating for the greater region and Garmisch-Partenkirchen should be very thankful to these investors, because otherwise the area is completely stuck in the past. The traffic in the City is terrible even in low season. There are mostly cheap shops and cheap crowds. A lot of areas look run down. So do the hotels. The "Grand Hotel" Sonnebichl is one such example of a hotel that has seen it's best times long ago and should be avoided by the discerning luxury traveler.

The Alpenhof Murnau, although a famous place with famous owners, suffers from being stuck in the past as well and appeals more to older people. It would in theory merit a short stay for it's food and it's interesting, wealthy crowd.

I could go on and on about how wonderful this hotel is, but no words could really do it justice. It truely is a slice of heaven in the South of Germany.

My husband and I stayed for 2 nights as part of our honeymoon. The scenary is breathtaking, the hotel just gorgeous and the staff so accomodating and helpful, nothing was too much trouble.

I must make special mention of the hotel general manager - Nikolai Bloyd - who went out of his way to ensure we had an unforgettable experience. He is so passionate about the hotel (and I can see why, it truely is spectacular).

We have stayed at some unbelieveable places around the world, but without a doubt, this was our most memorable experience.

I would go back in a heart beat and highly recommend this place to anyone. A must for anyone travelling to Elmau and its surrounding area, you will not regret choosing to stay here.
