We have just spent a few days at Carlisle Bay. I should say straight away that we are not really hotel people, but we needed a top class place to chill in Antigua. This fitted the bill with staff of such high quality. They were so genuine and friendly and nothing was too much trouble. The position was splendid. We had a garden suite with a fantastic ocean view. It was large perfectly equipped and maintained. The food was good enough. East was superb.
Unfortunately there were a very large number of under fives sharing this paradise with us. We love kids and adore our own grandchildren, but somehow on a holiday, other peoples' children are not exactly what you want. Especially as little ones are the ones who grizzle and scream when they are tired and after a full day on the beach - boy are they tired!.
The website says that families are one end of the beach and couples are the other - this did not seem to be true as for nearly 2 hours at my favourite snooze time of day (sunset), a toddler screamed solidly- very near our room. He was being minded and I felt desperately sorry for the minder as he was inconsolable and nothing would stop him screaming for his Mum. I felt I ought to go and assist - but realised that only Mum was going to do.
That same evening we ate in East at 7 30 and had to put up with a screaming toddler for half an hour till they went. The hotel asks parents to eat before 8pm in East - but we do not really want to eat that late - even 7 30 is quite late for us.
We did enjoy our stay but would think twice about going again unless we were looking for somewhere to take the children - in which case it would be my first choice.
We hired a car and had no trouble with the roads. It was most enjoyable exploring and finding some of the wonderful beaches that Antigua is famous for.
