“Its days must be numbered!!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed February 15, 2007

We spent two weeks in Antigua for my fathers 60th birthday. We were in fact staying at Carlisle Bay (which was absolutely fantastic). During our stay we had promised ourselves a special meal at Curtain Bluff. Famed for its wine cellar and fine cuisine we thought we were in for a real treat.

The reality was:

- Dreadful service
- A set meal at $100 p/p with a very limited choice of pretty poor dishes
- Red wine delivered freezing cold
- An incredible wait for desert (which was only chocolate ice cream!!!)
- A 'wedding band from hell'

In my opinion this place represents a Caribbean resort completely trading off its reputation. Hotels such as Carlisle Bay (just next door) are hot on their tail. Add to this the numerous options that holiday-makers now have in the Far East & Indian Ocean I am not sure the future for Curtain Bluff is rosy.

In terms of price this place is attempting to compete at the highest levels and in my opinion is failing terribly. I am sure it has a loyal audience but I can only assume they have not looked at whats on offer these days for that price!

I will concede that we did not stay there or visit the rooms but I am sure we saw enough. In fact meeting the owner on leaving the hotel was enough to tell me how they had got to this state and where they were heading.

They have a good position with quite a nice beach, however I think someone who knows what they are doing needs to buy this place and give people back some value for money and compete on a world stage again.

I write this review while sitting at the desk in my junior suite at Curtain Bluff, looking toward the ocean beach that is right outside my door. We have had a wonderful time during our first stay at this excellent resort, and prefer Curtain Bluff to, e.g., Le Guanahani, the Dorado in Puerto Rico (now condoing), and the Hyatt on Grand Cayman, all of which we have visited in the past few years. (Our travel agent told us about Curtain Bluff, a small, privately-owned resort with beaches on the Atlantic and Caribbean.)

The service is excellent. Many servers attend each meal and, if you order from room service, someone arrives with your order within half an hour, sometimes less. Breakfast includes fruits, cereals, eggs, pancakes, an assortment of pastries, or any other breakfast food that you request. Lunch is a buffet on the beach -- very good -- while, despite what some of these reviews tell you, dinner is the equivalent of any first-rate restaurant in NYC or Westchester County (elite restaurants such as Daniel, Nobu or Le Grenouille excluded, of course). Everything is included in the fee, except for gratutities, which comprise an 18% "service charge" added to your bill; some services (a massage, e.g.); and special wines, etc. .

The accomodations are comfortable and up to date -- more so than the Guanahani (although we stayed there in 2003, prior to the recent renovation). Internet services are available in each room. There is no TV as of yet, although each room is cabled and -- who knows -- TVs may be available in the future. (We didn't want one, but families with children might appreciate the option.) The views are spectacular, while the Caribbean beach is quite swim- and sail-able. School has been in session this week in both the U.K. and U.S., so there are no school age kids visiting, but there are several families with small children, indicating that this is not an "aging" resort.

While construction of the spa has been delayed due to the World Cricket Tournament, which is scheduled for March-April and has booked up all the contractors and materials, the fitness center is well-equpped and spotless, with classes scheduled each day. If you want to do a "day trip" -- we went to the English Harbor and St. Johns -- the hotel will arrange for a driver.

Finally, the music played during the dinner hour includes "old standards" (e.g., "New York, New York") and Caribbean music, and ends at 11 p.m. It was not noisy in our room; we slept to the sound of the ocean waves lapping at the shore.

We are hoping to return next year. Thank you, Howard, Chelle & Rob!

We've just come back from two week in Antigau and Nevis where we spent the last week at Curtain Bluff which is reputed to be one of the island's premiere hotels.
There's no quibblling with the stunning location and the water sports and other facilities were top rate but the rest just didn't live up to our hopes.
Service was sloppy and at times just rude. The buffet style lunch was fine and dinner was ok but the breakfast was dull and uninspiring with no variation. The accomodation was dated - the fixtures and fittings in our bathroom were just worn out. Having the cleaners cupboard outside our room didn't help either as it was like Piccadiliy Circus with all the cleaners gathering for a gossip....
We like our wine but on the occassions we ordered from the list we were lucky if our wine arrived before the main course was served. This was made worse by the fact that the red wine was chilled and took some while to come up to temperature which meant we either let our food go cold waiting for the wine to warm up, drank chilled red wine or - more often than not - ate our meal and drank the wine afterwards. And don't get me started on the entertainment....
Apparently there are many many loyal people who have been visiting CB for 10, 20 or 30 years so I can only assume that the hotel doesn't worry about attracting new customers. Our overall impression was that the hotels management has become lazy and arrogant and nothing at the hotel made us want to return..
