“Beautiful and relaxing”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 2, 2013

We spent a week here in November 2013 and it was the best all-inclusive we have ever been to. The resort was near capacity but did not feel half full. Food was excellent (meat cooked properly, fresh veggies and fruit, in-house baked goods), especially the a la carte restaurants. My mother has a very sensitive stomach and always has some sort of GI upset in the caribbean, but not at Verandah. The grounds were gorgeous, rooms simple but clean and functional. Great watersports at the beach, enclosed bay made boating and swimming safe. Staff was extremely friendly and more than once a manager would come by and check up on us at the restaurant or on the grounds. We had small children so did not leave resort but others told us of a short walk to devils bridge and Long Beach, when we come back we will have to explore more!

Room Tip: Recommend 300 level bungalows for young families that don't need the 2 bedroom cottages - they a...

From arrival to departure zero complaints!! My husband and I were celebrating our anniversary and arrived to a welcoming reception with fast check in. Our room was a waterview and was fantastic, very private and tropical, we could see the bay.

Rooms: King bed is hard but comfortable, room is exceptionally clean and well air conditioned. Kitchenette is a nice feature. Rooms are cleaned quickly and quietly to a tee!

Dining: Delish! Ate at Nicole's twice, would highly recommend this restaurant the menu was creative and bursting with flavour! The steak was tender and the lobster was to perfection!! Ask for the Spanish red better then housewine.
Buffet and other A La Cartes were great as well, large selection of fruits and dishes to suit picky eaters and more adventurous appetiites!!
The buffet did not repeat for dinners once and the selection of soups during lunch and dinner was stunning!

Pool, refreshing and large, close to main bar and never full!!

Beaches were fantastic on and just off resort. This resort is the perfect location on the island.Great water sport staff so attentive and willing to help those new to water sports!

Did a few day trips, stingray City was the most fun!!

Staff was the best at any resort I have been too, genuine and accomadating, appropriately social and very pleasant. Barbara the manager, Quacy, O'Neil, Shane, Tarick, Pat and many more staff make this resort a five star for us!!
Overall we will be going back when we book antigua again!!

Room Tip: Rooms near beach are very private but close enough to all restaurants etc.

Our family of 4 just returned from a 7 night stay at Verandah Resort. We LOVED this resort. We have traveled the Caribbean annually for over 15 years and Antigua is our new all time favorite island. Low crime, gorgeous landscape and beaches, lots of "off resort" family friendly activities, friendly folks, and normal American food (no mystery meat!)

Verandah is a stunning property. The facilities, restaurants, pools, beaches, food, staff, views, and general overall feel are top notch. All the public baths around the resort are super clean too. (unlike Mexico and others). Antiguans are clean people!

I will say the rooms are "average at best." They are modestly furnished and need a little updating. But they are clean. We were never in the room anyway with all the activities and beautiful facilities.

Our kids had a fantastic time. Not only did they make new friends, they loved the Kids Club! It is most excellent with very nice facilities/playground/baby pool for toddlers. It is underused and I highly recommend it for all ages. My kids were checking themselves in to the Kids Club!!!

The one negative is that they do not offer room service. You must eat at the restaurants. So if you can, go to the grocery store in St Johns the next day and grab some good wine, cheese, dips and snacks to have around.

I would go back tomorrow if someone offered me a trip back. Go and enjoy! You won't be disappointed. We met people from all over the US, Canada and of course, England.

Room Tip: Get a two bedroom.

Just got back from 5 days and I must say the staff at Verandah is very friendly!

Good points:
Great staff
Nice location as it's next to long bay beach and devils bridge.
Rooms are big and have mini kitchens
All the rooms seem to be the same. We had a water view and it was decent.
They are willing to work with dietary restrictions ie vegan, etc.
Kids club hours are long and included.
They have golf carts to transport guests.

Areas for improvement:
Resort overall needs updating
Need better tasting house red wine
They did not use the local rum at the bar
Did not have a drink menu
Would like more healthier and fruit options at the buffet.

from initial impressions - glass of sparkling wine and cold towel , through to final check out 2 weeks later with shower room , a gift from a member of staff to take home and ' come back next year ' from so many staff members , this was the resort experience led by the amazing staff who hosted us . Not only that but the food was excellent as was the wide variety or drinks - cocktails branded spirits etc and decent wines . Our 2 tours - Elmo's safari and the Extreme boat tour which included the stingray swimming experience were both good choices , although not cheap. The room was good , although the partial waterview would have been better with the banana trees in front of the lovely verandah trimmed .
Just one example of the service : We asked for a tour of the grounds to look at the trees / plants etc ( which were lovely ) . The ground staff gave us a great tour and at the end provided us with coconuts to drink from as well as opening local almonds . On the last day the supervisor found us some ripe bananas .. just because he wanted to .

Some additional comments :
the food was generally excellent . Nicole's was worth the extra for 1 evening but with a la carte in 2 locations ( prebookable the day before ) we decided once was enough .
both beaches had some weed but the quiet Rasta beach also had jelly fish so nice for a quiet drink/ sunbathe but not swimming . The main beach was better for swimming and also had watersports . Finding a lounger anywhere was not problem
we enjoyed the mini golf
the entertainment ranged from basic to great fun , finished around 11.0

Conclusion : great value holiday with the outstanding element being the staff team
( a list of ' special ' staff would be too long and would miss someone ! )

Room Tip: Watch for the difference : waterview rooms have a ' partial view ' , waterfront rooms are ov...

We found a great deal for this resort and decided to give it a try for our annual Thanksgiving holiday and had the most wonderful vacation. At the end of our 5-days there, we were all sorry we didn't take the 7-day package. The resort is definitely more fitting for a travelers who are looking for just relaxing on the beach and taking in the beautiful Caribbean weather.

Having read other reviews, there were several things that concerned us and this is what our experience has been:

1. Hard beds - yes, the bed was hard, but for me surprisingly comfortable. I fell asleep right away and woke up surprisingly refreshed seven or eight hours later. This is more than I can say for our soft, expensive bed at home. My husband had a harder time on the hard bed, but was also relatively rested. Worst case scenario there is a pull-out couch in every room that is much softer and the staff will be happy to set up for you.

2. Staff - staff was friendly and helpful and were not expecting a tip (as has been my experience in other resorts); some were in better moods than others, but everyone was helpful and accommodating to our requests.

3. Landscape - the resort is located near a small National Park with beautiful views (where we took walks daily). Inside the resort, the landscape was even more beautiful - with luscious green trees. The walkways and streets were hilly and there was a long stairway to the beach. But the good news is that with the constant eating and drinking during the vacation the hills provided me with a constant workout and to my surprise I did not gain any weight! If you are tired, you can always just hop on a passing shuttle or call one to come get you.

4. Food - a lot of people complained about food. Personally, I loved the salads, the daily soup and the delicious fruits that they had to offer. I am also a meat lover and did not have any issue with the daily meat selection. Breakfast has the standard - eggs, bacon, cereal, fruit, etc. fare. Lunch and dinner were similar in their selections with several meats, rice, potatoes, soup, pizza, etc. We tried the Buccaneer restaurant, in addition to Seabreeze buffet, and the food was delicious. That said, it was a little slow to get to us and the staff was overwhelmed. Still, glad we had that experience.

5. Dress code - everyone is expected to look put together, but otherwise the resort wasn't strict about their no-flip flop or gym shoes rules. That said, I didn't see any guests who weren't mindful about how they looked. We were a little concerned that they would be too strict before coming, but those worries were not substantiated.

6. Pests - there were mongooses, several resident cats, frogs, lizards, and lots of beautiful birds. There were also crickets that were pretty loud in the evenings, but did not keep us from sleeping. In the morning, pelicans were on the constant hunt and coming quite near our waterfront patios. I would say if you are bothered by nature - this is not a place for you. For us, it was very rewarding to be able to sit on the patio and observe all this wildlife. The mosquitoes and sand flies were also not bad at all. I attract all the bug bites all the time and only got a couple during my time there. Others had none whatsoever. Pretty unusual in a Caribbean destination among lush greenery.

Beaches - the beaches are small and have some seaweed. However, right outside the resort there is a beautiful, seaweed free beach that's free to all and is about a 2 minute walk away for those who want a little bit clearer water. Personally, I enjoyed the beaches in the resort just as much as the one outside it. If you want to visit other beaches, Guest Services can arrange relatively inexpensive taxis for you. We had a taxi take us (a family of 6) around for a whole day all around the island for only $120 US.

Overall, the resort is not for those who are looking for a very active vacation. Entertainment was scarce and ended at 11pm. There were no parties, bonfires, etc. Instead, the vacation was very peaceful and relaxing...with many people curled up with a good book (and they have a nice library you can choose from if you finish your reading material ahead of schedule). There are also activities you can do outside of the resort for a fee. Guest Services is happy to help you find exactly what you are looking for.

We would be very happy to go back to the Verandah again!

Room Tip: Waterfront suites are amazing. They sit on a cliff and overlook the water. Beautiful.

Just returned from a fantastic week at The Verandah. Seafront room was spacious and quiet, the only grumble being the lack of milk in the fridge and the shower which flooded the bathroom (other guests had the same experience). The bar area was relaxing with great service & unlike some all inclusives, it was easy to get a drink while they were open (including champagne). Food was good albeit 3 of the 4 restaurants are indoors, so we chose to eat in the beach grill most of the time. Reception & guest services were quiet & efficient, but please note if you want to eat in the A la Carte restaurants rather than the buffet, you will need to book early! All the staff were amazingly friendly and always said hello accompanied by a big smile! Water sports were easily accessible & efficiently run by Carlos & his team who worked really hard to make the beach a great place to be . The resort covers a large area so transport by golf buggy is available & effective. Entertainment was somewhat tacky, but typical for this type of resort. The Verandah is not the place to go if you want to party all night (bars close at 12-30am), so appealed more to the 35+ age range. Long Bay is a 5 minute walk from reception & offers some great snorkelling from the beach. The whole island felt very safe, the locals are really friendly. If you want to relax & take each day as it comes, The Verandah is for you!
