“A little piece of paradise”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 9, 2013

I went for a week to The Verandah Resort in June. It exceeded all my expectations. I've never done an all inclusive holiday before and this was lovely. Large, sprawling, well tended gardens and all accommodation is beach bungalows on stilts. Beware that it is quite hilly and covers a large area so you do end up walking alot every day which might not suit all people. Lots of humming birds, hermit crabs and butterflies everywhere as well as an interesting array of insects (we saw a tarantula one evening!). It has two private beaches - both are heaven - white sand and clear turquoise sea. One is a quiet beach and one has all the water sports. Am not a fan of going in sea, but there wasn't a ripple on it, it was so clean and inviting that I was in there every day! Alot fish to see so borrow their gear and go snorkelling. Whatever time we arrived at either beach, we could still find a sun lounger in the shade (the sun is very strong there!). They have a full itinerary every day which you can choose to do. None of it needs booking. Walks, gym classes, aqua aerobics, sailing, kayaking, wind surfing, tennis (actually this is the only one that does need booking). All are free and the tuition is great. Free drinks - alchoholic and soft drinks all day and a choice of four restaurants (one for breakfast, two for lunch and 2-3 for dinner) - so not all open at all times. One of the four has an extra charge but is well worth it ($25 each) - we had lobster and it was delicious! Do book the good restaurants 24 hours out as they are alot better than the buffet restaurant. Mix of people there - couples, families, older people - but all friendly. The staff were amazing. Mostly locals and alot who had been there since the place opened six years ago. All so helpful, cheerful and couldn't do enough for you. Lots of day trips you can do which cost extra - we didn't as there was so much to do onsite and we were only there for a week. We did go scuba diving offsite which was amazing (boat ride out was rather hair raising!). The decor in the rooms I thought was a bit plain and possibly a bit dated but it was spacious and perfectly clean and comfortable. All round a lovely trip - beautiful and relaxing. I did mention that my pillow was too hard and a new soft one showed up by that night!

Room Tip: All rooms have A/C. If you don't want to walk far, then ask for a room near to the restaurants...

When I made reservations at the Verandah Resort for my family, I was told that the resort is an all-inclusive resort. I found the cost to be expensive, but I was told that all meals, drinks, and activities would be covered in the cost. When we got there, we discovered that one of the restaurants required a $30 per person additional charge. My husband and children were told that they could not use the sailboats because of the wind (really?), and we had to wait for about an hour for hamburgers and pizza. My son ordered the same drink at the bar that he had previously and was told that they did not have the ingredients. When he said that he had already had one, he was told "no you didn't". While the property is beautiful, the staff is only average. It is also located about as far from anything as you can get.

We were looking for a week long beach break with guaranteed warm weather and complete relaxation, we found it at Verandah Resort & Spa. From the glass of sparkling wine on arrival and right through our stay they staff at the Resort provided friendly service and were always smiling.

The food served in the main sea breeze restaurant was of excellent quality and there was a different theme each night so always something new to try. The breakfast buffet provided something for everyone from traditional full english, to cold meats, omelettes or waffles. We mainly had lunch at the Beach Bar & Grill which again served excellent food and good cocktails off of the menu.

We chose a Water Front Villa as the terrace gave us an unobstructed view of the bay, and was great for relaxing on before heading out in the evening. The room was spacious and the air-conditioning was superbly efficient. The rooms were kept immaculately clean by the ever smiling staff. A great feature of the hotel was that they have their own fresh water supply so drinking water from the taps was not an issue.

There were plenty of activities to keep you occupied for a week as well as the obvious relaxing on a sun bed and swimming in the sea. We did venture to Shirley Heights for the Sunday evening party which was good fun but slightly pricey so bring some cash (as there are no ATMs) if you are going to eat and drink. Sting Ray City was an awesome experience swimming with Sting Rays in the Atlantic Ocean. The helicopter trip to Montserrat was a thoroughly interesting experience as well.

I would definitely recommend the resort if you want a week stress free week away in the Caribbean Sunshine.

My wife and I arrived on 6/29 after a sleepless crazy month. We arrived at Verandah to happy people, warm smiles and a glass of champagne. We were brought to our clean room and opened up the blinds to reveal our balcony overlooking a beautiful bay. Great start!! Then, one by one we started meeting all the staff and making friend after friend with other visitors. Every day was beautiful. Property is well-maintained and naturally beautiful. Food changed daily and there was plenty of choices for all different pallets. Beaches were very nice and pools as well-especially adult pool w waterfall. Anyone complaining about this place @ $119 a night is pompous and out of their mind. Go and enjoy!!!

I am sitting in the reception area waiting for the taxi to take us back to the airport and the journey home - a good time to reflect on a second very enjoyable stay here. I don't make a habit of returning to the same place for 2 reasons. Firstly, usually it isn't as good second time around as the initial uniqueness of the experience cannot be recaptured. And secondly because there are so many other places in the world that I want to visit. But we have come back here after a 2 year gap and it has been better second time around. We made sure we had a room overlooking the beautiful bay near the main pool which places most of the resort's facilities within easy reach, and of course provides a wonderful view from the verandah each morning and evening. The rooms are all that one needs, spacious, cool and clean. The bed must have been comfortable as I had no trouble sleeping. The main beach has plenty of shady spots either from the trees, awnings or thatched-roof tables. Sailing, canoeing and other water sports are available. The beach bar up above is great for either lunch or evening grill dinner (must be booked ahead), and cocktails etc all day.

The main improvement over last time for me was the quality of the food. Previously just tolerable, this time it was all enjoyable, the breakfast spread especially. The evening entertainment was also much better, pleasant live singing for the most part with the 'fingers and sticks' steel drum band being excellent. The staff were always friendly and ready for a quick conversation and joke. And when we did step outside of the resort Antigua is a wonderful place to be. We felt welcome and safe wherever we went, no one was overbearing, and our 2 trips with Tropical Adventures (Cades reef snorkelling and Island Safari/Stingray City) were great days out.

we stayed in june 2013 in rooms 303 & 304 which were a perfect location and view from the balcony. The beds are super king and NOT too hard very comfy. Filter coffee in the room is a nice touch which are replaced every day. All the staff we brilliant very accommodating especially iran, tarick and tracy who went the extra mile to make your holiday special.
excursions we can highly recommend the stingray city, island tour with sean and cool cat catamaran
we found the barracuda restaurant was brilliant to seat and be spoilt however the buffet was great if you were coming in after a full day out and wanted a relaxed meal, nicols was lovely for the lobster, the best was bar and grill on the beach staff brilliant and chicken in pineapple and ribs were a beach time treat.
mini golf table tennis pool and all the water sports were enjoyed by all and got very competitive and gave us all great holiday memories to last until we return.

Room Tip: all rooms are brilliant locations we did not upgrade and had rooms 303 and 304 which still had a lov...

We spent a fortnight here in mid June and eally enjoyed the relaxing time.

The hotel is spread out over a large area with large numbers of trees shubs and plants all around us, so there was a comfortable feeling of space and calm.

The main pool is not particularly large but more than adequate, we could always find sun beds. The rooms are spacious, clean, comfortable and for the most part well maintained. One item of equipment broke when we tried to use it and they replaced it with a brand new item without question.
All the staff went out of their way to be friendly courteous and helpful, even the behind the scenes staff.
The hotel cleaned the two beaches everyday even though they are public, as are all beaches on Antigua.
The food was good quality and freshly cooked. There are four restaurants, not all open at the same time. Nicole's. a fine dining experience so you had to pay a supplement, was well worth a visit.
The bar stocked a variety of brands, not just local and cheap stuff you get in so many all-inclusives.

The large distances and some slopes across the site, the hotel being built around the sides of a peninsular, were offset by golf carts running around all the time. Many rooms had steps but some didn't so anyone with a mobility issue would need to make it clear they needed a room with easy access.

The hotel was not large at 180 rooms, so on any one night the food choice in the main restaurant may not be as extensive as some of the much larger AI complexes we have stayed in the past but the selection changed each day so we were quite happy. The Buccaneer, an al la carte restaurant at no supplement, was a good choice for us and was very popular

The rooms were large, well equiped chalets in pairs, the one we had was a waterview room where we had a very good view of the bay, over the roof of the waterfront room one tier in front of us. So if you dont mind seeing a roof in front of you save the money by not booking one on the waterfront. The only bad point and probably true of many similar hotels, when it rained the tin roof really made a tremendous noise. The staff cleaned the rooms very well daily although sometimes quite late in the day.

The best beach for snorkelling was out of the hotel front gate and 300 yards down the road to the right where a small reef had a large variety and volume of fish, some not so small.

Evening entertainment was OK, but we are not massive fans of music and are not night owls so we are probably not best to judge.

We had one member of bar staff who was rude to us, a significant exception to the rule, but that was sorted out.

The hotel could do with a hot tub /whirlpool and the spa treatments seemed very expensive at about three times what we pay in the UK. Otherwise no real negative comments.

Overall a very good place to stay.
