We stayed at Jolly Beach 13th April - 27th April 2007.
Our party consisted of 2, my partner and myself (36 & 39).
This is the best holiday we have ever had and we are planning to go back ASAP.
Now for the review. When we arrived at the hotel, we were greeted by smiling, happy, polite staff, with a very welcome cold, refreshing fruit punch. We queued for about 20 minutes for reception to check in and found the reception staff very friendly and courteous. Our room was ready and we were taken to it immediately. We had upgraded to the 'Standard' room and yes it was basic and smallish, but you are in a 3rd world country and at the end of the day, all you do is sleep and get washed and changed in it, so we were happy enough. The air conditioning worked absolutely fine and it was a new unit, so it didn't hardly make a noise. The ceiling fan also worked fine, no noise at all. We only had a shower in our room, but who wants to have a bath in a very hot climate. There were several different types of plugs sockets in our room, including 'English', so if you have GHD's etc, there is no problem heating them up at all. It is advisable to still take some adapters though. Also take some 'Mosi plugs' as this helps to keep the mosi's down to a minimum. Yes you will still get some mosi's in your room, but if you keep the screen closed at all times this also helps. You can buy some very very good mosi repellant in the resort shop called 'Off' (green can), which you can spray on yourself, clothes and bed sheets, this kills the mosi's etc instantly and keeps them off you almost completely.
There are 4 restaurants to chose from. 'Hemispheres' the main buffet restaurant which had good choices most days (although its not advertised, if you have young children you can get chips, nuggets, sausages, fish fingers etc for them if you ask your waiter/waitress). 'Utsav's' the Indian restaurant, situated in the courtyard, has a limited menu (approx. 8 starters and 8 main meal dishes) but the food was outstanding and it felt like 5 star. 'Lydia's', situated on the beach, the seafood restaurant, although they did have some meat dishes if you don't like fish. And finally 'Bocciolo's', situated at the far end of the resort near the hammock lounge, the Italian restaurant. We did not go to the this restaurant as my partner did not have any formal shoes with him and we didn't want to risk getting turned away. The menu did look fine though. All the staff in all the restaurants we went to were fantastic, very polite and helpful, they were all 5 star.
All the bar staff were fantastic, very polite, worked hard and never left us with an empty glass, we always had another drink waiting before our present glass run out and they soon remember what you drink very quickly.
We had been given some advise from my parents who travel to the caribbean very frequently to tip the staff a little (5 - 10 eastern caribbean dollars) and they will become your best friends and always look after you. And they did. We took it in turns of who received the tip, but you do get your favourites, Gem was very bubbly, outgoing and has an infectious laugh. Neil (Neil 'Diamond', Diamond in the rough or Mr.Bombastic) was very bubbly again and very polite. Janice was bubbly and outgoing as was Robin and Bobby.
We found it was more sociable to sit at the bar, especially if there is a group, although the stools did become very hard after a while, but you can keep getting up and down as and when you wanted.
The beach vendors are polite also, if you say no, they leave you alone. If you say maybe and get into a conversation with them, then you only have yourself to blame. If you are wanting to have a go on the Jet Ski's, find 'Mr. Plastic Fantastic' he gives you the best deals on the beach and is fun.
The location of the hotel is the best on the island. The beach has white powdery soft sand, nothing like we have ever experienced before. The grounds are kept very clean and tidy and are a delight to the eye.
We saw the island by helicopter ($150 U.S. each) which lasted 30 mins, but the experience will stay with us always, one word to some the helicopter trip up is 'Awesome'. It is a must if you can. We also saw the island by sea on a catamaran ($100 U.S. each). This trip was an all day trip and very worth while. You cruise around the island, picking up other passengers at other stops, you then cruise around to 'Green Island' where you stop for about 2 hours in total, 1 hour of snorkelling (all the equipment is supplied and in good working order) and then about 1 hour to have lunch on board the catamaran before setting sail again around the rest of the island. There is a running commentary about the island and sites etc as you go past. We were picked up at 8am and returned back at about 4pm.
We felt we had to make sure we put this review on here as we have read some bad reveiws prior to ourselves staying at Jolly Beach. This is a 3* plus resort and would recommend to the people who have moaned about the hotel to go stay at 'Jumby Bay' (£10,000 plus) or Sandals (£6,000 plus) where you pay for 5*, although we must say, Sandals did not look that nice by air or sea.
Just one final word of advise, if you are polite and couteous to the staff, they are polite and courteous in return. If you are rude and ignorant to the staff, they will return your gesture. We witnessed quite alot of people being rude and treating the staff as slaves and in our opinion, those guests got what they deserved in return.
Jolly Beach Hotel is the best hotel and holiday we have ever had, in the best location on the island, with the friendliest people we have ever come across. If you are going to this hotel, you are in for the time of your life.
