Our family of four (children aged 5 and 7) stayed at the Jolly Beach Resort from Feb.10-Feb. 17. We had a wonderful time and probably will return next year. We thought it was excellent value for the money.
I wanted to write a review because I owe Trip Advisor. We love this site and have used it to pick hotels in Istanbul, Athens, Anguilla, Grand Bahama, Barbados and now Antigua. When I was researching this hotel in Antigua I wasn't worried about negative reviews. I have realized that you have to ignore the extreme reviews on either end of the spectrum. Also, you have to recognize that people who havent travelled much in the Caribbean may have unreasonable expectations. In using this website, I have found the most helpful thing is seeing the pictures of what the beach, restaurant and rooms look like.
The biggest point I want to make is that you don't go to the Caribbean if you are looking in this price range for fine dining and luxurious accomodations. You have to spend a LOT more to get it (e.g., at places like Biras Creek, Cap Julaca, Sandy Lane, Curtain Bluff, etc.)
We love the Caribbean because of the beautiful beaches and reliably warm weather in the winter. This is our priority. Jolly Beach has the best beach in Antigua and one of the nicest in the Caribbean. We feel reasonably qualified to judge this since we have been fortunate to have been to most of the major Caribbean islands (Aruba, Anguilla, Bahamas, Barbados, St. John USVI, St. Lucia, Virgin Gorda, St. Barts, St. Maarteen, Turks and Caicos and St. Thomas). We love the Bahamas (my parents lived there for 11 years) but you can't be guaranteed of swimming weather there in January or February.
A beautiful beach to walk on and to swim in is the most important thing for us. Note: the water at Jolly Beach isn't crystal clear so it isn't great for snorkeling here. If you want amazing snorkelling this isnt the resort. .
We have stayed in the more expensive places, but now that we have children we have less money to spend :-) and we are also looking for a different kind of vacation. Jolly Beach delivered the kind of vacation our whole family enjoyed.
We stayed in a superior room with two Queen size beds. It was fine basic accomodation. The room was clean and the water pressure in the shower was great. We did get clean towels everyday. We hardly spent any time in the room.
The food was plentiful and good, not great. We ate in the buffet restaurant for breakfast and lunch (great fruits and salads). We never ate at the buffet restaurant for dinner because we thought the atmosphere resembled too much of a cafeteria. Despite the fact that it was peak season we never had a problem making reservations (just go to the Indian restaurant at 9:30am to make 2 reservations in advance) for the sit down restaurants.
We loved Lydia's which was outdoors on the beach (although it was seafood it had plenty of non-seafood choices for the kids, hot dogs etc.), the Italian Restaurant (can I just say that people complaining about the dress code are ridiculous...they arent asking for a coat and tie!) was good and although we don't normally like Indian, we thought Utsav was terrific and went there 2 times. This was the first all inclusive where I actually could drink the house wine...it was Chilean and actually pretty decent.
When we were at Jolly Beach the resort was filled with families from Britain (apparently half term holdiays). This was really great for our kids because they enjoyed interacting with children from a different country. My son loved playing "football" (soccer) on the beach and my daughter now thinks she can speak with a British accent. :-) In the past we have looked down on people who park their kids in a kids Club during a family vacation, but our kids begged to go every morning because they loved it. We also enjoyed the two dinners the resort planned for the Kids our week so that we could have two dinners on our own.
My husband loves sailing so the free hobie cats were a great plus. We never had to wait to take one out. Also, we noticed that the watersport staff took people out for lessons which I thought must be helpful if you couldnt sail. My children also liked paddling out in the kayaks.
The vendors on the beach are slightly annoying. I guess the resort cant stop it. We always said a polite no and they moved on but I do wish they werent there.
Also, I want to speak to the bug issue since I am very susceptible to mosquito bites. BTW, unless you go to islands with very little rain (eg Aruba) you are going to have a problem with mosquitos in the Caribbean. The greener the island, the bigger the problem. Two years ago I actually visited Antigua on a sailboat and we went to Shirley Heights (beautiful views) and Nelson's Dockyard around sunset. I sprayed bug spray before hand (at least 25% DEET) and had no problem but one of our friends got severly bitten and had HUGE red spots on his legs for a week. So, we were prepared for the bugs at Jolly Beach. We were religious about spraying ourselves starting at 4pm and we only got a few bites. They were quickly fixed with "Sting Eez"...it really works.
Several reviews have mentioned the awful immigration process in Antigua. I thought they were exagerrating and not used to "island time." They weren't. Maybe it's because we got stuck behind a Virgin plane from the UK ,but we waited 70 minutes in a very hot room to get through immigration. This wasn't a great introduction to Antigua. Fortunately, Customs was a breeze and then we went out and a friendly taxi dispatcher got us a taxi and wrote down the fare ($24 US which I thought was reasonable for the 25 minute trip to the hotel).
We had a great time with our kids at this resort. They made a lot of friends and we all had fun. We enjoyed the evening entertainment, especially the Steel Drums Band and the Sunnydale dancers (young Antiguan girls). I probably wouldn't go here if I didn't have kids (I prefer the privacy of a place like the Rendezvous Bay Hotel in Anguilla) but I think this a great place for a winter vacation for a family. We hope to go back next year.
