Ok...here it is, our trip report to Jolly Beach January 1 - 15, 2007. We are a couple in our 50's and have been to all inclusives in Aruba (Tamarijn & Manchebo), Mexico (Las Hadas & Sun Palace), St Martin ( Great Bay) and Dominican Republic (Iberostar Bavaro & Iberostar Haciendas Dominicus). We had been to Antigua twice before approx 15 years ago & stayed @ Halcyon Cove & had very fond memories of the resort & the island. Why did we not go back to Halcyon Cove? It was a lot more money & we were told that it was a non-smoking hotel - which we subsequently found out was only partially true. We try & research our vacations before we go cause we hate surprises. Having said that, this site is GREAT and a MUST in terms of preparation & queries & the experts here know their stuff.
All the following is IMHO and may not be in agreement with my better half...lol...nevertheless...Jolly Beach is as advertised ie a 3 to 3.5 star Hotel. It is old - I think the stone in the entrance was laid by Mr Bird in 1979. We booked a King Superior cause we wanted the advertised sitting area and requested a ground floor room. We do not like high rises (which JB certainly is not) and like to walk out our front door to the beach, pool etc. I sent an email ahead of time & was told that they would put our request into the queue and do what they could but could not guarantee it. We expected this. When we arrived, they had assigned us a second floor King Superior room. They told us that they didn't have any King Superior's available on the ground floor but could give us a ground floor Superior ie with 2 Queen beds that has no sitting area. The spousal unit (SU) wanted to see both rooms before making up her mind so off she went while I cooled my jets in the lobby. We decided on the ground floor room as that trumped the sitting area. Besides, according to SU, the rooms were both the same size and the sitting area was squished...whatever that meant. Hotel was not busy - I would guesstimate 1/2 full.
Room
I have travelled a lot for not only pleasure but also business and I got to tell you, for a 37 year old hotel, our room was in great shape...everything worked...A\C, TV, sliding doors, toilet, iron & ironing board, safe, hair dryer, fridge etc. Beds were firm and with 2 queens you get lotsa pillows. Lotsa place for your clothes both folded & to hang. Full bath. Nice little patio facing the ocean with 2 chairs & a small table. Room was very clean & our maid looked after us. Yes, I did leave her a small tip everyday and at the end of our trip but she deserved it. Room was not done one day cause it was her day off so we just got fresh towels from another maid. We did happen to see the Supersaver Room. OMG!!! Yeah, people say they don't go on vacation to stay in their room but, man, those Supersaver rooms make Japanese apartments in downtown Tokyo look massive!
Food
Buffet presentation sucked compared to other places. Was there always something to eat? Yeah but certainly not a lot of variety. We ate the buffets for breakfast & most lunches & only 1 dinner. Snack bar at pool is pretty good & makes some awesome jerk chicken. Highlight for us re food was the a la carte restaurants. Best we have ever had at an all inclusive HOWEVER...a very annoying thing is the surcharges if you want seafood or a steak. Sorry but when you go to an all inclusive, it is supposed to be just that...all inclusive. Factor it into your price, do whatever but to have to pay for spiney lobster in the Caribbean is freaking ridiculous and if we are gonna pay for seafood, we are going to eat off the resort...which we did - more on that later. Lydias is the only restaurant that you can smoke at. It also happened to be our favorite and the most accommodating. We also went there for the 2 Sunday brunches that we were there for which were also good. Utsav's is the Indian restaurant and is also good. They serve a naan bread appetizer with coconut which is to die for...lol. It is also outdoors but no smoking ...go figure. House wine @ both Lydia's & Gutsavs was Chilean Vina Maipo which SU really enjoyed. We also ate at the Italian and it is indoors and has a dress code. Food was also good and there is quite a varied menu and has a very nice appetizer bar. I recommend all three vs the buffet for dinner.
Beach
Extremely clean beach...great walking beach but no comparison in terms of length re Bavaro Beach. Ocean is very sandy and gradual decline in front of the hotel. I was in the ocean every day and enjoyed it mucho. Great sunsets.
Pool
Huge, clean pool. Did not go to the "quiet" pool. Never a problem getting a chaise at either the pool or beach.
Bars
One of the reasons that we chose this hotel was because of the swim up bar. Well, it was DEAD around the swim up bar. Like really dead. Staff at this bar were more interested in talking amongst themselves and seemed put out if you asked for a drink. They congregated on the other side of the swim up bar at ground level where there was the other bar. The other main bar was outside the buffet facing the entertainment
Entertainment
We only saw the limbo dancer/fire eater who we thought was pretty good.
Other
There is an internet room that is open 9 - 5 but closed 12 - 2:30. Now I ask you, if you are going to email someone, do you want to
take time out from your day or would you want to do it early in the AM or in the evening. As a result, we used the internet room at Jolly Harbour across from the supermarket @ Jolly Services. It is open to 8:30 PM and is cheaper than the hotel's.
Supermarket is open 8 - 8, 7 days a week and is a 5 min walk from the hotel. Very modern, clean and reasonably priced.
Casino was dead when we were there but that didn't stop us...lol.
Staff in general at the hotel were not very friendly especially @ the buffet & pool bar.
Phone cards. We bot a phone card at the pharmacy across the street from the supermarket. It wouldn't work in the call box in the lobby of the hotel but did work @ the call box in the Casino & in St John's. A few days before we were leaving, we found another call box at the staff entrance to the resort which the front desk never told us about where the phone card did work. We did not use the phone in the room cause of the exorbitant charges. Phone cards are must if you are calling outside Antigua.
St John's - went there for 3 hours. Seemed very poor. Bot some T shirts & souvenirs. Jewelry stores were very expensive and inflexible on prices.
English Harbour. Went there for lunch one day. Walked around, very interesting & lotsa history. Some magnificent yachts. One, the Mary Jean docked right in front of us - a 160 foot beauty.
Beach vendors. Ok. I find them annoying. Period. Sure, you tell them no & they walk away. How about when you are sitting around the pool and they walk up to the edge of the property & yell "Massage!!! Shiatsu!!! Reflexology!!!". Another annoying thing - why do they get to eat the food & enjoy the drink of the hotel? I can't tell you how many times, we saw them eating the food from the pool snack bar and once, when they were finished with the food, the threw the basket onto the beach beside them. Besides, prices were much better for the same T-shirts & necklaces in St John's than their prices.
Restaurants. Ate @ Cocos twice and had excellent meals & service. Our Tour Rep bad mouthed the food @ Cocos so we decided we had to go there since I had only read good things about the place...lol.Very nice view looking back @ Jolly Beach from Cocos. Very reasonably priced restaurant IMHO. Also ate @ OJs for an early dinner one night. Decided on OJs based on the reviews on this site & also cause it was close to the JB. We got there early cause we wanted to see a sunset and were not disappointed. So we are sitting there under the deck when all of a sudden people started arriving all dressed up like in their Sunday finest. Had to be about 75 people including kids all dressed up. Turns out it was the wake for the funeral we had passed on our way to OJs. They brought their own food & drink and because we were seated at the entrance to the deck where they were all going, each & every one of them turned to us, smiled and said hello. Friendliest people we had met the entire trip! Re OJs, good drink & food. I had the T-bone steak which was great. SU had shrimp which she said was very good. Also, reasonably priced.
Mosquito/sand fly bites. Man, did we ever get bitten. We bot all sorts of crap including sprays and after bite stuff - nothing helped.
All in all, relaxed, no surprises, read 5 books, wifey didn't have to cook and we got suntans. Would we return to Jolly Beach or Antigua? Probably not.
