We stayed here by default rather than choice. We were returning from St Martin to UK via Antiqua and Caribbean Star got us into Antigua late so we missed our connecting flight to the UK. Due to it being the last weekend of the school summer holidays it we were bit able to get back to the UK for two days and hence Caribbean Star put us up at the Jolly Beach.
The hotel looks very grand when you arrive with a large reception area. The staff were efficient and explained to us how the hotel works and we were then taken in a golf buggy to our rooms. These I guess were the basic rooms on the ground floor. My 14 year old son immediately likened them to Luke Skywalkers house in the desert in Starwars and they are very much like this - artex walls with alcoves for wardrobes, artex covered brickwork for bedside tables and dressing tables and beds - thats it nothing else really. Bathrooms were very small and again covered in artex. If I was staying here for any longer than a couple of nights I think I would hate it but it really depends on what you are used to.
We went to one of the bars and met up with other people who had also missed the connecting flight. Everything at the resort is free as it's all inclusive and it was a bit like being at a student party. A long bar area and disposable glasses with a disco. There were groups of large families there grandparents, teenagaers, toddlers etc all having a good time and clearly enjoying themselves. If the Jolly Beach were in the UK it would be equivalent to an exotic Butlins or Holiday Camp.
Breakfast the next morning was a big buffet and the food was plentiful, hot and the breakfast room was clean. The birds were rather off putting though as they have pecked away holes in the netting and fly in and swoop down on plates of food if you leave a table unattended. I understand you can also eat at this restaurant in the evening which if there birds were there again I would not like at all.
The resort itself has lots to do and the beach was lovely, but again everything seemed to be organised and very much like a holiday camp. Its not our idea of a holiday at all but if you like to be organised, have everything all inclusive and dont mind basic, accomodation then the Jolly Beach would be fine. In short don't go there if you want luxury or to experience the real caribbean but if you are looking for a fun place and don't want to venture out of the resort then this place is for you,
