Just returned from Jolly Beach yesterday from a week long vacation. Two couples in our 40's (seemed about the average age at this resort)spent a fun week at Jolly Beach. We have travelled to many places (Aruba, St John, St Marten, Hawaii, Cancun, Bermuda etc) so I will share with you my honest thoughts based on my travel experience.
Pros:
Joly Beach is a beautiful, long beach, no problem getting chairs, kept clean and shared with local vendors. The beach is the best feature of this resort. We found the vendors harmless and amusing and bought a few items...beads, coverups. We enjoyed renting jet skis ($45 USD pp for 1/2 hour) and floating around on the free mats in the ocean. No need for water shoes in the ocean, just a few shells, then gentle waves to carry you in pretty water, slightly cloudy.
Pool and grounds were also quite nice and kept clean. Workers at the resort were very friendly and eager for you to enjoy the island. Entertainment at the resort was not bad either...something going on every night by the locals, slightly cheesy, but all in good fun.
Food - No problem getting reservations at any of the 3 restaurants. Lydia's restaurant is on the beach and food was decent, Indian restaurant was ok (but we are not too familiar with Indian food) and our favorite restaurant was the Italian restaurant. We ate there twice...classier atmosphere, newer building and food was very good. Strict dress code at the Italian restaurant (no denim or open toe for men, also men need collar shirts and pants). The breakfast buffet at Hemisphere's had something for everyone (omlettes by order, french toast, pancakes, fruits etc) and was also good. We also enjoyed lunch everyday by the pool...good burgers, jerk chicken, fries, honey chicken, grilled ham and cheese etc.
I would also recommend the Catamaran Tour and snorkel trip (about 8 hours, $95USD pp) which we booked thru the hotel. Tour was very well organized, included a decent lunch and a tour of the island and snorkel. Lot's of fun and you get a glimpse of the other resorts.
Took a taxi to town (St John). Many more vendors, but sell same stuff as on the Jolly Beach. Nothing too exciting in the way of shopping, but there are some jewelry and duty free shops.
Jolly Harbour complex (next door) had a fun sports bar and outdoor bar, Steely's. There was also a nice Casino, but it was always nearly empty. Seems odd as most other Islands, casinos are packed. I did hit a nice jackpot on the slots, but I think I was the exception.
Cons:
Drinks in the all-inclusive are plentiful, but all local liquor and beer. No bottle beer or top shelf here, but I guess you get what you pay for.
The worst part of this trip was the room. We booked a standard and it looked just as shown on the website, small but ok for 2 people. This would have been ok, except for the following.
The air conditioning worked fine, but dripped on the bed. A few small ants in bathroom everyday. No water pressure in the shower after the first person showered (I rinsed my hair by glass water from the sink). We had a problem with the sink leaking, then our last night, the toilet leaked and completely flooded the bathroom into the hallway. We came back to our room about midnight (after calling twice in the afternon to report the slight leak in the toilet in the afternoon) to find this flood. Maintenance did come up promptly, but I did not like the idea of sleeping in this room and was told hotel was full and we could not change rooms for this last night. Also, woke up to a few new mosquito bites every day.
I will say bugs were around and I had a few bites (which is a turn-off for me), but the mosquitos did not seem as bad as other reviews had me prepared for.
Though, we never had this bug problem in any other islands I have visited. We did see some other people with some nasty bites.
I will close by saying it is a great beach, nice pool, friendly people, decent food and we had a fun time. The resort rooms are old and definitely need many upgrades (both cosmetic and out of decent living needs) to make it a place I would want to return to.
Not advertised as a 4 star and I would credit it with 3 stars, more for the beach, less for the rooms.
