We have returned from a 7 night stay at the Jolly Beach Resort (JBR) in Antigua. I have to admit i was very dubious after reading the many negative reviews. I can now give my opinion which should help future visitors to the JBR. This is a very authentic caribbean hotel, what i mean by that is that you have to bear in mind which country you are in! The Bellagio of Las Vegas it is not, but comparing any previous stay anywhere else in my opinion is unfair to the JBR.
Rooms: We stayed in a Standard room, which had a Huge bed, and a lovely big balcony, a fitted wardrobe with wooden hangers and five shelves within the wardrobe, white painted wooden slatted sliding doors to the front. The room is relatively small, what i mean by that is there is walking space either side and to the end of the bed and that is it. Either side of the Bed there are concrete bed side tables, as is there a similarly molded concrete table with a seat able to be slide underneath it. As you can imagine it is very simple. No wooden furniture! The floor is a simple square tile in a red colour. Floral bed covering on bed and seat remember you are in the caribbean and it is an older hotel! The bedroom in my opinion was OK, not great but not bad either as really we were not hoping to stay too long in the room anyway, oh yes there was a great TV with HBO so movies at night if you wanted!
Bathroom: This is where i was most let down. It was very very basic. Infact i nearly wanted to move when i saw it. Again very small enough room for a toilet, sink and shower cubicle. Floor tile was ok, but under sink was exposed and you could see the rusty pipes. Also the sink had a huge crack down it which had been glued. The shower had brilliant pressure, which is the reason my boyfriend did not want to move as that is a bonus in such a big hotel. However, the tile was a light cream colour with brown grout really unprofessional looking job also, functionally it worked and drained the water well, just aesthetically it was horrible. Fresh lovely clean towel and mat daily though which was lovely, plus the maid washed all the floors daily also.
Food: This is where i dont understand the other comments, i could not fault the food. It was delicious. Wide variety from salad, cold meats, soup, main courses from fish to chicken to goat stew! Burgers for the less adventurous! That was the nightly buffet at Hemispheres, lunch and breakfast were all equally brilliant, i loved the food and could have eaten there for another week and been happy. I am a pretty picky eater if i am being honest and there was always something i could eat and enjoy.
The Italian was great too. Very upmarket service, attentive and friendly. Food was always delicious. You could have had up to 6 courses if you wanted i had 3 and was stuffed! Chicken liver pate to begin, penne pasta with cheese sauce, and chicken with spinach for my main course, couldnt manage a desert! Presentation of the food was impeccable.
The Indian, was a real surprise for me, i thought it would be chicken tikka or lamb buhna and that would be the strength of the menu, on the contrary a very varied menu all cooked beautiful and presented served lovely and hot. I had cabbage and chick pea pakora, then a chicken dish which i forgot the name of! Lovely though. Pilau rice and nann accompanied the meal. You were outside eating in this restaurant as you were in Hemispheres, take a cardigan for the ladies in the Italian as it had the Air conditioning cranked up and i was kinda chilly!
Lydias Seafood place, i didnt eat there but did have a superb Pina Colada one night well worth it for that. Met people who had eaten there and no bad comments from them!
The bar at the Hemispheres was where we spent most of our time. Neil, Vance and Janice at night took great care of us and our taste buds at the bar, try the passionate lady and the rum punch or a Tom Collins if you like Gin!!! They always made it fun to sit there and help you out if you didnt know what to drink! In my opinion avoid the wine, it was very very very basic, could strip a door brilliantly, i do love wine though so thats maybe why. If you dont drink alot of wine you may like it but for any wine lovers avoid it! Becuase its all free as we were there AI you can drink till you hearts conent so be careful as they do make the drinks really strong, if they are too much they will take it away and make a weaker one for you!
The Staff: Ok i have an idea of why some people wrote that they were rude etc Imagine doing what they do day in and day out for not much money. You get the characters like Neil, Brenda, Janice and Sharon who are more open and lively without much coaxing, but others if you simply say hello, how are you and smile, give them some interaction instead of being demanding and treating them like the "hired help" you get such a wonderful reaction from them which is easily resiprocated after that initial meeting when they serve you again. I think that would have helped the people who wrote such things about them. What i am trying to say is you get what you give, if you are miserable and dull and dont smile, then not many people would be willing to smile back at you! I like to think i am a friendly, happy person who likes good service because i have been on both ends of the trade, its always easier to be nice to nice people you know? From check-in to check-out we had first class service and would not hear a bad word uttered about anyone at the JBR.
Beach: Without a doubt in the top three most gorgeous beachs on the whole island. White sand, nice long wide beach plenty of room. Great crystal blue water absolutely stunning. We took a Catamaran round the island and there were maybe only two other beach i saw that were in the league of ours. This is where we spend most of our time, the pools were great but the view from the beach and the ocean was just spectacular!
All in all, we had a brilliant holiday! The only thing for me that would have made it better was a bigger room, our friends we met paid an extra $50 per night for a superior room which was more what you would want, i asked to see it for my own curiosity! Much more space and a nice big bathroom with bath tub and shower over it with vanity sink unit more americanised i guess. But that is alot of money on top of what you pay for a week. If i had been there for 2 weeks i would have maybe done that as it would have been great then, but for a week i just put up with the tiles in our bathroom! Oh the Air conditioning was great in both our rooms but they had moved and upgraded as they're Air conditioning was not working and being typically british did not want to complain so simply upgraded! I do have to agree with the BUGS in particular the sand flies, take Vitamin B1 for 2 weeks before you go because i usually do not get bitten and they had a field day on my legs! Nothing helped, but everyone is walking around with bitten legs so at least you dont feel like an outcast! They do itch like mad so take some anit hystamine cream or piriton to help with that! I would go back but take a superior room and go after the rainy season between Dec and March as thats when the flies are not so bad as not much water around and weather is more consistent. Average hotel, Above average staff and food and drinks Superior Beach! Go have fun, enjoy the rum but take a superior room from the start is my opinion and you will have a great time.
