We had our wedding at the Jolly Beach Resort and had an absolutely fantastic 2 weeks. Here is our view of Jolly beach and Antigua…
Hotel & rooms:
Hotel is not as big as you might think. Staff very helpful and polite. A little laid back but it is the Caribbean! Stayed in a superior ocean view room, which was very big and cleaned every day with fresh towels most days. Not much of an ocean view but was right next to the beach and pool so perfect for early morning/late evening dips. Some of our party did have the odd complaint but all were dealt with pretty quickly (for the Caribbean).
Food & amenities:
Food was pretty good. The Italian - Fair, Indian - excellent and Lydias -excellent (go sunday lunch for steel band). The Hemisphere buffet food varied and was pretty good most of the time. Lots of cocktails and some of the bar staff are the quickest I’ve ever seen! Watch out for those rum punches! The freeform swimming pool was lovely and the swim up bar great. Didn’t eat much from the grill but what I had was ok. The Hobie Cats are a must! One small sailing lesson from the most miserable Antiguan we met and off you go! Be warned though that due to the eco system being disrupted from building the Harbour, there is no good time to go snorkelling on the beach. It is way too cloudy. Evening entertainment was good.
Wedding:
Out of this world! BIG BIG thanks to Beverly, Isha and Elvis. They helped to make the day go really well and are all fantastic. No hiccups at all and the service was beautiful (thanks to Mr Matthew).
Recommend:
Pay a little extra for a bigger room. Super saver was pretty small.
Try Paddles Eco Tour instead of Eli’s. Both offer the same but Paddles is smaller and more friendly (cheaper too). Half a day is all you need and you can crash in the afternoon after all that kayaking.
Shirley Heights – great views but would give Sunday evening a miss. V busy and better seen during the week.
Long Bay Beach – best kept secret of Antigua. Great for snorkelling, relaxing and a great little snack shack with the most friendly of Antiguans. Popular with the locals.
Wadaddli Cat Cruise - expensive but worth it.
Car hire – great way to get lost and see the real Antigua!
Only snag we had was that I ‘lost’ my handbag from the hotel reception when checking in. Security were v helpful but the rep was useless. We went with First Choice who employ Botours to represent them (as do many other companies). Our rep, Kim, was not bothered by our predicament and had no personal knowledge of any of the trips. She was non-plussed about everything. Hotel staff were far more helpful and seemed genuinely concerned. Got bag back from a taxi driver(?) after Botours had to pay him off (only decent thing they did).
