This hotel has, like most places had good points and bad points. The main criticism would be the rooms. But then I was expecting that from having read many reviews on this site. They are very basic - we had a standard and it was just about okay. The air-conditioning and ceiling fan were excellent and kept the room cool. The maids didn't switch them off either - I've had that in other hotels where I've stayed so you come back from the beach to cool off and it's roasting! The bathroom had no window as it opened onto the corridor and it's hard to describe but it had an opening - too high and not open enough to see through but only have a grill on it it meant that if someone came past the room talking you thought they were IN your room!!! The door also had a grill (opened from inside) but again it meant the sound-proofing of rooms was non-existent.
I'm grateful to someone saying that some rooms were noisy as before I went I e-mailed and asked for a quiet room which we got - some of the rooms overlooked the dining area and bar/entertainment area and I can imagine that the noise would have been unbearable.
The rooms were very basic but kept clean. Towels were a little old and we had to ask for more than the standard 2 we were given.
The food in Hemispheres was excellent and I didn't agree with what others said about it on here. We stayed for a week and every night there was something different served. All three meals were excellent and I would rate the food at the hotel and the all-inclusive drinks as 5*. What makes this resort 3* is the accommodation and the fact that the hotel could do with a refurb.
There are no air-conditioned areas of the hotel apart from the little shop which isn't great. When we stayed it was roasting and very humid and I personally would have prefered to eat in an air-conditioned restaurant rather than open plan but the upside was you had a fantastic view of the sea.
Staff were excellent and friendly and we found that some people treated them very rudely and got back what they gave.
On the whole we found them to be very accommodating and friendly IF YOU TREATED THEM with some respect and not as your personal servants.
The beach was excellent and we did a trip on Friday and picked up from other beaches and we definitely thought our beach was better than the beach at Sandals for example. It was a mile long but yes the water was cloudy.
Yes you get peseterd by people offering you jetski rides etc etc but we found that on the whole if you said "no thanks" they left you alone but I agree that sometimes it's a bit annoying.
The non-motorised water sports were great - Hobie Cats - fantastic fun, kayaks and wind-surfiing and pedalos. The staff at the water-sports centre were also friendly and helpful.
The gym is supposed to be air-conditioned but believe me it wasn't - it was very small and very hot - I only managed 20 minutes at 6.00pm and the ceiling fan was simply circulating warm air. I didn't go back - got my exercise in the sea swimming.
The pool was very nice but we didn't use it much - why bother when the warm waters of the carribbean were waiting????
The sun loungers were in plentifuly supply and we didn't find any problems with the beach towel lady.
All in all this IS a 3* resort but the food, drink and location more than make up for it.
Don't be put off by negative comments on this site but DO upgrade to a standard room and expect it to be basic.
My only other main criticism would be the very slow check-in. We arrived on a Saturday and the queue took ages and our room wasn't ready at 3.30pm in the afternoon! However they allowed us to check out late the following week. The fact that the Reception is open-plan means you are very hot having just arrived. More staff and a quicker check-in would be good - but just be prepared.
