We've just got back from 2 weeks staying at the Suites (timeshare appartments) having travelled with Virgin. We were there 18th June - 2nd July. When I was looking at reviews there were very few for the suites so here we go! We went for the Suites as we have twin 3 year olds & a 4 year old after a friend who did AI in the Carribean suggested it as she had trouble with children being awake when they should be asleep (not good in a hotel room) and wanting to eat when everything was closed due to the time difference & jetlag.
Flight with Virgin was excellent - couldn't fault them. We got a porter at the airport (US$1 per bag) which meant we by-passed the long queues for customs. Service by Virgin from airport to resort was great & fast. We were dropped off at main reception rather than the Suite (Jolly Beach Vacation) one so remember to tell the taxi driver where you are! Was no problem as the hotel popped us in a car & we were taken over there. Checking in was fine (you need to give credit card details) & there was free punch. The kids loved it & it was a good introduction as to how laid back the Antiguans are. We tried to rush the kid's drinks so we could get to our room but we were told to basically chill out & leave them to drinking the jug dry!
We had a 2 bedroom suite (214). Having stayed in Time Shares in USA we found this one to be better than others we've stayed in there. It looked new. The bedrooms were really big, airconditioning in the living room plus bedrooms. The kitchen had a marble work top, tabletop grill/oven, microwave & 4 ring hob. There were a couple of small bottles of water in the fridge and lots of ice which was a nice touch. There were flowers everywhere which was a nice welcome. The balcony/verandah was a great size & we could see the harbour (just) which was nice. The tv had the Disney Channel & there was a DVD player that you can watch US DVDs on (we borrowed a couple before we left). There was a great utility room with a big washer & tumble dryer. It was great to be able to dump bags from the beach in there. We put washing on everyday & went home with none! You get free big beach towels so you don't need to take your own even! The only 2 things I can say that aren't so good is that there was a connecting door to a 1 room apt next door & we could hear everything in there from the hob going on to the microwave beeping. Pity them with us next door! The other thing is that there are wicker blinds in the bedroom which means you are woken each morning with the sun coming through your window. (when the sun did bother to shine!!!). But that's it everything was great & I'd highly recommend them.
So we're a family of 5 & the adults are vegetarian (another reason to be selfcatering!). The supermarket is a 10 minute walk away and had everything you could ever want. Mainly American & British food. We ate in 3 restaurants in the Harbour: Pete's Grill - not good for veggies! We got a free meal & breakfast here as part of our holida deal, wouldn't have eaten there otherwise, service slow & toilets like an oven! Mellinis - Italian - excellent - pizza and pasta dishes were great. We had takeaway pizza from there when kids were in bed too. The salad has the best dressing on them. Saffron - posh Indian restuarant (not your english takeaway style), it's above the Casino and has a 2 men with steel drums each night, views over the harbour. The food is delicious. Was stressful with the children even though we were the only people there - trying to get the glasses away from them & the nice knives! We had a takeaway from there when the kids were in bed (!!). Lovely! Castaways - on the beach just over the bridge. The main place was being done up so they had a stall open. It was fab! Fried egg club sandwiches, spicy potatoes and salad, yum! We went most evenings to have a rum puch and watch the sun go down while the kids played on the beach. Happy memories! It reopened properly the day before we left.
As for the hotel, well there are loads of reviews about it here! We loved the pool and the beach was amazing. It was so quiet with maybe 12 families with children maximum around the place! We used Kids Club once (rubbish weather) and the children loved it. They've just moved it to a new big building with outside play ground. All very secure filled with new toys. The lady on duty looked bored but the kids loved it & came back with painted material flags. We did a food/drink pass from 10am - 5pm on a Sunday so had luch at Lydias while listening to the Steel band - lovely!
We did a trip to St Johns (was raining) and it was full of cuise ship people. Remember to take flight ticket if you want Duty Free. Mama Lolly's veggie restaurant was great - food was delicious. Would recommend doing a take away for a 2nd meal!! US$20 each way. We also did the Glass Bottom boat trip which we felt safe with with the kids. Our 4 year old snorkelled which she loved. They stopped & got out starfishes which was great & then stopped on a lovely beach. They then brought out chicken & crisps. We pre-ordered cheese rolls which were fine. If you do this trip it says free drinks but they only have fizzy ones so take your own juice for little ones. We also hired a car from Dollar in the foyer. US$96 a day. We paid US$5 per car seat (had 2). We went to Nelsons Dockyard which was lovely and had lunch at the bakery, nice fresh rolls.
The other thing we did was hire a golf buggy for the day US$20 a day. The kids loved it & we could have a look at all the posh houses. The girls had 2 braids put in their hair on the beach - US$5 each (Rosie was our favourite) and we bought and drunk coconut milk from a beach guy US$5.
Another nice thing about the holiday was nice comments about the children - probably because we saw so few! At home we're used to 'you've got your hands full' there we got what a lovely family! I loved the Antiguan ladies - they would say Twins? and we'd say yes & they just smiled.
Wow - I always have a lot to say! To summarise - it was a great holiday. It was ou of season so it was very quiet - I can't imagine it busy! There's nothing I would change about it. What we did was limited by the children but everything we did was great. Felt like we were in paradise. Do contact me if you have any questions!
