Like many of the people writing reviews here, I also read through older reviews before booking and was certainly apprehensive based on some of the negative reports here. However, I was SO completely and TOTALLY blown away by my experience here! This was such a wonderful vacation and I really can't wait to go back again!
The Room:
We arrived around 3pm and were immediately greeted with drinks and smiles. It took about 10 minutes to check in- a porter came and drove us to our room and took care of getting our luggage there. He asked if we were satisfied with the room and even said he could show us other options if we were not. (We stayed in an Standard room (Room 2010) with a absolutely gorgeous view of the beach. Like some of the reports here, the bathroom door doesn't lock and does have slats but unless you absolutely MUST be in a sealed room while in the bathroom, I didn't think it was a problem. I like to get dressed in private and it was no problem at all. The shower was AWESOME--it was like a jet engine powered shower...stayed hot even through my 30 minute long showers!
The bed was comfortable- could have had a few more pillows, but I didn't care about that at all. There was a gorgeous deck to sit on and watch the amazing sunsets. All in all, while basic, the room had everything you should need while on vacation. If you're looking for marble bathrooms and oak furniture- it's not your place. Oh- there is a TV which only got about 5 channels (one of which was TNT-lots of Law and Order which was amusing!). I tend to think if you're going to Antigua to get cable, you should just stay home!!
The resort:
The grounds were lovely!! Lots of beautiful folliage and greens. Very clean. There are bits that could use a little painting, but as we were leaving (April 11th), there was alot of that going on so it looks like sprucing has been on-going. Bring comfy shoes or flipflops because the place is big but not overly so! The resort is on the extreme west side of the island which means it's the most breathtaking sunsets you can get.
The pool:
There are 2. The smaller one tended to be occupied mostly by the older kids/teens who were around. The main pool, which has a beautiful fountain pouring into it, was a little cold but certainly not unswimmably so. And really very gorgeous. The swim-up bar (my personal fav) was in the shade so could be a little chilly when the wind stirred up but there were tables (in the pool) that were out in the sun so you could still tan and drink!
The beach:
Absolutely breathtaking! It's huge-- there were plently of places to sit and not be crowded, there were plenty of beach chairs and people were very respectful of your property. We often left our spots for an hour or 2 to go eat, windsurf, whatever and it was always right as it was left. I can't say enough about the beach!
The one issue you may consider is that because of the tides of the island and the fact that much of the west beaches were marshes a one point means the water is not crystal clear so you can't really snorkel off the beach. However, we signed out snorkle equiptment from the resort and took a rental car to other spots on the island and that was amazing. (more about that below!)
Now, I've read other reviews regarding the "beach hawkers".I have to say, both myself and nearly everyone else I spoke to regarding them who was there with me, agreed that though they will come over and say hi, that a simple no thank you is plenty for them to be on their way. There was one person selling aloe who tried to put some on my leg (which granted was burnt) but I just moved and say, no. He went on his way happily. There are people who sell horseback riding and catamaran tours--I met some people who did those and they did have a good time. Otherwise, just say no thanks!
The food:
It was impressively great! The buffet, the 3 speciality restaurants--all the food was very good and the service was wonderful! I've been to many 5 star restaurants and (especially Bociollo-the Italian place) this was very close. There are what they call "supplementals" on the menus at the specialty places which mean you pay additional money but you completely don't have to- they aren't forced on you, and there are plenty of other options which are just as yummy. All in all, I was VERY impressed!
The service:
I am STUNNED to hear about people saying the staff was rude. I thought not only the staff, but the people in general (including other guests) were incredibly friendly and polite. The one exception was the concierge women who didn't seem overly ready to help anyone whatsoever, which is odd considering that's her job. Also, the men who work the water sports hut are a little grating but in no way rude...just kinda non-chalant. The staff cleaning our room did a wonderful job and were very nice.
The overall experiece:
It was a wonderful time and a truly memorable experience. We got WAY above what I had anticipated based on the money we spent. There were 6 weddings while we were there-- I spoke to many of the families wiht those parties all of whom said it was wonderful. There were people with children of all ages and it seemed like everyone had a lovely time.
Suggestions:
Reservations are needed for the 3 specialty restaurants: the lady gets to the desk around 9:30- get there a little early and the whole process shouldn't take more then about 10 minutes. Try and do it on your first day, then you won't have to worry about it.We accidentally showed up for one reservation 45 minutes late and they still honored it though the place was fully booked.
We took the Eco-Adventure tour. It was nice but not worth the money we spent (nearly $200 US). The staff was very nice but it wasn't what I was hoping it would be. The pamphlet says 2 guided snorkleing stops, we only got 1, it wasn't guided and we only were allowed to snorkle for like 10 minutes. It was ok. but not great. There's probably other options which are better .
We also rented a car for the day. For the car, insurance, and 2 temporary licenses it was $126 (US) and WORTH EVERY PENNY!!!!! There are maps that give you a suggested path, we kinda followed that. We wound up in Long Bay which has reefs about 20 feet from short which were really cool. We also drove to Nelson's Dockyard and Shirley Heights which should NOT be missed. DEFINATELY TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE CHANCE to rent a car!!! It also gave us the change to see other resorts (since all beaches are public by law) and it made us very glad to be where we were.
All in all a wonderful and really really special experience! We will definately be back!!
