Just returned from Jolly Beach Resort....The most beautiful setting, lovely beach, very picturesque. The people of Anigua that we met were really lovely. Looked you in the eye, honestly wanted you to have a good experience, educated and informed. We felt very comfortable and safe with these people. We stayed in a standard room with Kingsize bed.
Our friends chose the super saver room and I must say I'm glad we "up-graded". Still quite small, but certainly adequate. No "Luxury Room", if that's what you are looking for. No refridgerator, coffee maker, etc. Bug Spray is a must, available in the gift shop, as Mosquitoes were a bit of a problem. The food was very good, with enough of a selection to provide everyone with a full plate and a nice variety of desserts. We loved "Lydia's", the seafood restaurant, and ate there almost every night. The Greek restaurant was closed due to construction, and we ate in the Italian place one night. It was good, but we preferred the more casual, outdoor settings of Lydia's and Hemisphere's, the main dining area. We rented a car one day and took a trip to Shirley Heights and Nelson's Dockyard. Very interesting history and culture and beautiful views. Also took a cab into St. John's for a few hours shopping. One trip was certainly enough as there are only a few blocks near the Cruise ships and Casino that are worth checking out. The further away you walked, the more the stores were for the locals...hardware stores, etc. I found the prices in town to be about the same as the beach vendors and hotel gift shop, so I did feel better about buying from the vendors on the beach after checking "in town".
There is a small shopping center at Jolly Beach and a brand new Casino, all a short walk from the hotel. An enjoyable stroll along the docks in the harbor was a must after dining. I enjoyed the local art and purchased a small oil painting for $12.00 U.S., also a few water color prints, matted for $10 to $15 U.S. Our only bad experience came when it was time to leave, the airport was CLOSED due to a strick!! It took 28 Hours to make our way home once we were able to get a flight out. The Airport experience was dreadful, but I must say our airline did put us up in San Juan, P.R. at a beautiful (and modern) luxury resort with meal vouchers and Taxi vouchers....we were well taken care of. I would love to go back to Antigua, but will wait until the Airport is upgraded and the Labor problems with the Government are ironed out. We really did have a wonderful and relaxing stay.
