We have just returned from a great stay at the JBR in Antigua. The place has quite a few rough edges (but this is the Carribean, after all!) but the JBR has a lot going for it.
The staff are generally very friendly, with one or two of the blokes at watersports dept constituting the main exceptions. No worries though, as it's easy to borrow one of their boats, anyway. In fact, I spent a lot of time pottering about on one of the Hobie Cats that they have for use, free for guests. There's also windsurfing, pedaloes, kayaks, lilos and probably other things as well.
Our standard room was very basic, but it did have a ceiling fan, efficient air conditioning, a large comfy bed and some english football on the telly. It was also kept squeaky clean by housekeeping. There was a fair bit of noise, both from the entertainment dept and wildlife. It didn't really bother us, though.
The food was pretty good. Not wonderful, mostly not that exciting, but we didn't have a bad meal all week. Lydia's (seafood restaurant) was easily the pick of the bunch, with a good selection of seafood dishes, right on the beach. It really was splendid. I had lobster for a supp of USD22. The Italian wasn't that exciting, and we didn't get around to the curry house. Be careful with the dress code- quite a few people were turned away from the restaurants for wearing jeans etc!
Outside the main a-la-carte restaurants there was the buffet, which had decent grub for breakfast, lunch and dinner, as well as the grill by the pool, were we ate plenty of delicious jerk chicken. And burgers. And chips.
The beach was reasonably tidy; there were quite a few cigarette ends around, but we can only blame our fellow tourists for that, can't we. Disgusting behaviour, but there you go. The poolside entertainment was a pain in the behind during the day, with music blaring out all the time, which was at best unnecessary. We reached the conclusion that a fair bit of the entertainment was for the benefit of the staff rather than guests. In the evenings, things got a bit better, with some steel bands, local dancers and things. Sadly, there was also an under-populated disco, complete with wildly over-enthusiastic DJ, and on another evening the inevitable karaoke-night compelled us to use a quieter bar.
Locally there is Jolly Harbour, which we didn't feel the need to visit. A short walk down the beach there is a diving company, who we used for a trip out to a reef, and found to be excellent. I saw a turtle (my girlfriend touched it), two stingrays, including one about 10 feet long, and a load of other brightly-coloured fish.
We also took the trip up to Shirley Heights, which is a bit of a cynical tourist-trap, with a couple of bands and an expensive bar, but worth the journey nonetheless for the excellent views. Apparently, this is the vantage point that the Royal Navy used to sport the French coming over from Guadeloupe. Hurrah!
Anyway, all in all, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay.
