“Tranquil relaxing getaway for couples!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 5, 2011

Just got back from our honeymoon and we were very happy with our experience at Coocbay Resort. From start to finish they did an amazing job at making our honeymoon a memorable one!

The positives:
• location is breathtaking! the view from dining area is one to rival any other island resort
• staff are incredibly friendly and happy. we were personally greeted upon arrival with a rum punch and bottle of cool champagne in our room
• personal plunge pool was such a treat when you wanted to just cool down in your room! definitely go for this option, it is worth the extra $
• grounds are impeccably maintained
• the majority of the food was very good outside a few areas (see next section)
• beach is a minute walk away and one of the best on the island
• pampering spa treatments. we went for the 'couples massage' at sunset and didn't regret it!

The drawbacks:
• every other day at sunset you will get 'bug bombed' by some guy carrying around a leaf-blower style machine spitting up plumes of chemical smoke. it smells like death and with my wife being pregnant we were not too fond of having chemicals sprayed all over the resort. there has to be a better way to control mosquitos rather than this method.
• not a whole lot to at night besides drink at the bar. there was one night during our weeklong stay with entertainment, but very quiet beyond that. no tv (beyond pay per view movies) and the wifi was spotty in our rooms.
• breakfast could use a little bit of improvement in terms of presentation and selection.

Room Tip: Splurge a little bit on the plunge pool, trust me it is worth the extra $

This place is fabulous. Everything the website said and more. The staff make sure your stay is a memorable one and nothing is too much trouble all done with the biggest smile you can encounter. Be careful of the boys behind the bar, they are very good at their jobs, replacing one drink before you finished the other and probably some of the best barman I have ever seen. :0) They made my holiday. Food was way, way, above average for fully inclusive. Rooms with a view is an understatement. Worth paying the extra for the seafront cottages with their own plunge pools as these are the ones with the breathtaking views, pretty much right on the beach too. Didn't want to leave and can't wait to go back.

We arrived on this beautiful island full of expectation and high hopes having read such complimentary reviews on Trip Advisor. We feel that we should let others know a bit more about this resort that might not have come across on other reviews.
The Good:
• this is a beautiful island with lovely scenery and the resort has superb views across the bay
• our room (Plantation House) was big, bright and airy if a little rustic and basic as others have already mentioned and was kept clean and tidy at all times
• the staff on Reception were, in the main, helpful and courteous
• the grounds are beautiful and well kept with friendly grounds staff
• service in the restaurant was generally good and friendly and a special mention must be given to Sadie who was delightful
• some of the food in the evenings was very good and well presented
• Super service from Robert on the beach who was always attentive and genuinely seemed to enjoy his job and take pride in it

The Not So Good:
• the bar was unpredictable to say the least - it appeared not to be staffed at times during the day and despite some stormy weather, the bar which was supposed to stay open until 11 pm was often closed earlier depending on what time the staff felt they would like it to shut. This was 9.30 pm on one night and 10.30 pm on others. We had paid for an all inclusive holiday and felt that this was completely unreasonable. We wonder whether the manager is aware of this practise? On some nights the staff chose not to mix cocktails - lack of ingredients being one of the reasons given and on another - no reason given at all. The attitude of some of the staff serving at the bar was varied and at times borderline morose. Whilst some trip advisor reviews have praised certain bar staff, we are hoping to have given a more balanced and honest appraisal as we found it. For most people who go on holiday, the evening is an integral part of the experience and this was very disappointing as the whole resort appears to shut down by 11 pm at the latest.

• the beach was lovely but rather small with only part of it being used by the hotel. Although not advertised as such, it is a public beach and used by families. There were insufficient sun beds and sun shades and those that were available are looking somewhat tired. There are two large shipping containers by the edge of the beach which are used by jet ski owners who touted for business throughout the day. The jet ski owners use them perilously close to the shore line and it is only a matter of time before an accident happens with people swimming and snorkelling so close to the edge. The jet ski owners perform 'doughnuts' close to the shoreline and race off at high speed. They park their cars close to the edge of the beach and open all doors therefore sharing their particular choice of music with the rest of the beach. There is no beach bar as others have already commented - the trip to the main bar and back is a little arduous. This is somewhat disappointing for an all inclusive resort.

• the literature in the resort room stated that there would be light entertainment on a number of evenings - this happened only twice during our stay.

• breakfast in the restaurant was somewhat basic - it didn't seem to matter whether we were early or later within the breakfast serving period, food was not replenished frequently enough so people were left waiting and had to request that more food was brought out. Lunch was a varied affair with some rather odd combinations of food on offer.

• Regarding flights - we flew with Virgin and landed in Barbados for over an hour to drop off passengers. This added significantly to the flight time and we would advise strongly anyone flying to Antigua to fly direct if possible as the journey back took only 7 hours and 20 mins flying directly to Gatwick.

• The airport at Antigua on our return journey was an absolute nightmare. It doesn't have space to accommodate the number of people waiting to fly out (when we were waiting, there were at least four Boeings waiting to be boarded). Announcements are ongoing but impossible to hear and there are no monitors to give flight information. Everyone stood around in the general chaos for over two hours before we could board our flight.

In summary, we felt that whilst there were some good points about this holiday, we came back feeling rather jaded and disappointed. We are well travelled and whilst not expecting perfection (as indicated by by the brochure's star rating) there are too many basic errors that exist at this resort to put this holiday in the category of a good Caribbean holiday. If you are looking to visit Antigua for a 'holiday of a lifetime' experience, our advice would be to consider spending a little more to upgrade to a better rated resort to avoid the disappointments we have had.

4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 28, 2011

My husband and I stayed her for a week in August. We came in on Hurricane Irene and left when she was in the states. It was great to go somewhere where we could get away from the real world for a few days. We were greeted by front desk staff that were friendly and accommodating. Understanding the fight we had to get there because of Hurricane Irene. The hotel cottage was very basic but had a relaxing feel to it. I would suggest getting the cottage or rooms with air conditioning if you are a person who cant be hot at night. Even though the fan gave enough air you may need more at times. The room was always clean and so was the plunge pool. We always had birds and lizards on the deck coming to visit. But they were not aggressive just there. The food was good overall for it being inclusive. It is not totally gourmet but it was good. If you plan on being there are soon as breakfast, lunch start be prepared to wait at least 15 min. They never started right on time. So give yourself the time so you are not waiting. Dinner always is the time you select. They had wireless but it was not the best. So dont plan on always having it available or you may have to stick to one corner of the room like we did. lol

Our flight was canceled back to NJ so we had to stay an extra day. Phyllis was great at making our extra time there pleasant. Overall all the staff there was great who worked at the front desk. As long as you asked for accommodations respectfully and nicely then there were happy to accommodate.

Kerry and Craig are great servers. They answered all my husbands 101 questions about the island lol. I would also recommend the spa treatments. I had a hot stone massage and pedicure were awesome. My husband had a Swedish massage and facial. He said his facial was great but the massage not the best (i believe the young lady was learning her name was Michelle I believe) But the other two ladies were great. Also if you need a taxi please call or get the front desk to call Benji. He is great and being there right when you need and you can rent cars for the day from him if you want to just drive around.

I would recommend this resort to those who want to get away from the real world and experience nature and the beauty of Antigua. If you are a person who has to have the ultimate luxuries of the world this is not for you. But if you want peace and quiet and to escape for a few days I would TOTALLY recommend.

Things to bring:
Suntan lotion (high SPF)
LOTS Of bug spray (The one in the orange can it worked best and spray all day) there were so many people there who didn't have any and they looked like they had to chicken pox and the store at the hotel is expensive so bring it from home.
Laundry clothes pins to help keep your net together over the bed.
Wash cloths for some reason we never got any we ended up buying some in town.

those are your main worries all else just bring what you like.

Room Tip: air condition

The location may be idyllic and the views to die for but it's the excellent staff that make Cocobay what it is. They must see hundreds of guests coming through every month but they make each and every one feel special.
Accomodation is totally in keeping with the location. The chalets are perfectly equipped for holiday needs. Seafront cottage with plunge pool and air-con is essential in our view - plunge pool was always at perfect temperature for cooling off after the beach. We loved the fact you could shower with the doors open as the verandah area was totally secluded. Didn't quite get the flat screen TV in the room when the resort is selling itself as a romantic couples retreat, but we just never turned it on.
The food was amazing. In the two weeks we were there, we never had the same dish twice. The variety was impressive and nothing ever ran out on the buffet without being almost immediately replenished. Kitchen and restaurant staff were fantastic. How they manage to remember everyone is quite amazing, even recalling our favourite breakfast table, and all under the genial and watchful eye of Mr Gore. Dinner was of such high quality that it could be classed as haute cuisine. How anyone could want burgers on tap 24/7 baffles us !
Bar was open from 10am to 11pm and that is quite enough drinking for any Ted. Amazing cocktails interlaced with a bit of local culture and banter from the friendly bar staff. Glasses were refilled almost every time you turned your head, which resulted in us often staying longer than we should have. Again, amazing how the bar staff remembered what your favourite tipple was.
Our room was always impeccably cleaned by the wonderful housekeeping staff (Dena, you are amazing, thanks again for the Aloe Vera).
On a final note, Cocobay is the perfect location for wedding or honeymoon - we got married here - we would just advise that all your wedding requirements are very clearly discussed and agreed with the co-ordinating staff, as they don't take the initiative themselves to ensure nothing is overlooked.
Loved every bit of Cocobay, would love to go back one day.

Room Tip: Seafront with plunge pool and air-con a must, can recommend N° 10

Although getting out of Antigua was somewhat difficult with TS Irene in the area, we had a wonderful time at Cocobay. The front desk was great, food was great, service at the restaurant and bar was great. The room was nice and cozy with a great view. For any couple wanting a relaxing vacation in the Caribbean without the crowds, lines, and a urine-tainted swim up bar, I would definitely recommend Cocobay. We also had a day outside of the resort, touring the towns and countryside of Antigua, which I would also recommend.

We just got back from our stay in Antigua and we couldn't be happier with Cocobay. First off, our flight from New York got delayed due to weather, and instead of arriving around 3PM we checked into the hotel at midnight. After being shown to our room, the security guard arrived with plates of sandwiches and fresh fruit. which was so welcomed since the airlines give you nothing to eat! Already impressed, we awoke to a gorgeous view of the beach from our private balcony with the plunge pool, and it really set the tone for the week. Every single staff member we came across was so friendly and went out of the way to make sure you were having a good time. For the room, my husband and I decided to go with the seafront cottage with the plunge pool, which we highly recommend. The furnishings were simple, but the overall effect was romantic. The beaches were clean and the water especially beautiful. If you go, there will be several solicitations for jet ski rides, horseback riding, catamarans, etc. We didn't take advantage because we just wanted to read and lounge on the beach, but they are available if you are interested. If not, a simple No Thanks is all that is needed; no one here is pushy or forward at all.
The one and only reason I didn't give this fantastic resort an "Excellent" rating was the food. The selection is a little limited, and if you don't go within the designated hours (7:30-9:30AM for breakfast, 12:30-2:30PM for lunch, and 6:00-9:00PM seating for dinner) you are out of luck. You can maybe buy something at the little gift shop they have, but there is no ordering snacks at the bar or anything. I also thought the quality was sub par, but lunch was better than breakfast, and dinner better than lunch. Always get the soups, they are very good. Also, the restaurant Sheer Rocks was AMAZING! I definitely suggest splurging for a night (or two!) to eat at this restaurant. 5 stars all the way.
Another thing to note is that the place shuts down at 11PM, so if you like to stay at a place that parties until the sun comes up, this is not it. Here, you'll get a solid 8-9 hours of sleep, and be up for breakfast in the morning.
I also suggest a treatment at their wellness center, which is a tiny cottage overlooking the water. So relaxing!
Overall, our stay was fantastic, and it has been a really hard getting back to reality!

Room Tip: Go for the seafront or seaview rooms. The mosquitos are aggressive and the AC helps!
