“What a wonderful find!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 10, 2013 via mobile

Our first trip to Antigua and can't wait to return. The beach is over the top and they do a great job of raking and keeping it clean every day. We were lucky to get room 102 only 10 second walk to the beautiful turquoise blue water. We also had a great view of Jolly Harbour from out large balcony.
The suite is spacious and perfect when traveling with another couple. The kitchen has what you need but some of the items are getting warn and should be replaced.
The location is fantastic, quick walk to many great restaurants, full grocery store and much more. One warning, we could NOT use our debit cards as no interac is available outside of St. John's however credit cards were widely accepted.
The people of Antigua are one of the islands best gems. So friendly, smiling and happy to welcome you to share in their bit of paradise :)

Tranquility Bay exceeded our expectations in many ways, keep in mind this is not a five-star resort. The rooms were big and clean, the kitchen well stocked with all the appliances and cookware you could need. Air conditioning works great - separate units for the bedrooms and main room, never used the TVs. Furniture in the living area felt kind of cheap, but did the job. The bed was very comfortable. Access to the beach is a couple minutes of walking - and perfectly located so that you can walk south from the entry point and enjoy the amenities of the busy Jolly Beach Resort (kayaking, sailing, pools...) or walk north a little ways and find an area that is practically deserted. The grocery store is about 5 minutes walk and is well stocked to provide all you need for in-suite cooking - and their fried chicken is better than KFC and only 9 EC / lb! For better produce variety, take the bus into St. John's - the market is right across the street from St. John's bus terminal. There are several restaurants within walking distance, our favorites were the Crow's Nest and Miracles - we did do a lot of cooking ourselves. Apparently the food at Jolly Beach resort (the neighbouring all-inclusive) is not great so don't bother with the outrageously overpriced meal plans.

All of the staff at Tranquility Bay were very kind and genuinely eager to help you. Overall, we had a great stay and would definitely consider coming back if we return to Antigua.

Room Tip: We went for the deluxe two-bedroom suites, which guarantee you a room on the third floor with great...

Not a bad place to hang your hat if you're just planning on a beach vacation.

I stayed in a two bedroom condo in the "Caribbean Dream" complex. The bedrooms were quite large with old style (CRT) TV's. There was a more modern LCD in the living room, but we never turned any of them on. The air conditioners are internal vent and the rooms were quite musty smelling.

Both bathrooms were a little cramped - especially in the sink area. The toilet is immediately behind you when you stand at the sink and there is remarkably little counter space, though there is plenty of storage in the cabinet under the sink.

The kitchen seems to be well stocked though we couldn't find a bottle opener for our Wadadli! There was some bottled water in the fridge on our first day but it wasn't re-stocked so we bought our own after that.

We were in the "Caribbean Dream" building and had a very nice balcony but could not use it because of a pervasive septic smell. There was also quite a lot of traffic on the road below the balcony. We did not go on vacation to sit on a balcony, but it would have been nice a couple of evenings.

We briefly visited Jolly Beach next door and purchased one of their refundable, pre-paid drink cards (they don't take cash or credit at their bars). We stopped by their beach bar and ordered a $4 draft beer which was delivered in a 10-oz plastic juice glass. Quite chuckle-worthy!

I decided that we wouldn't be using the remainder of our $50 pre-paid drink card so I went to the desk for a refund. The clerk told me to, "come back in the morning" because she didn't have any cash. She then said, "...or you can come back anytime because we're open 24-hours.". Huh? This apparently wasn't "anytime". After waiting in line for nearly 40 minutes the next morning, I received my refund.

The only other spot we visited at Jolly Beach was Bocciolo restaurant. I'd tell you what it was like but we were promptly informed that our attire (collar shirt, dress shorts and sandals) did not fit their dress code. Perhaps that's why there was only 4 occupied tables at dinner?

We were visited in the room by a couple of mosquitoes but had no problems with sand flies. We wore a small amount of bug spray on our legs in the evening. We did see several people who looked quite itchy though, so your mileage may vary!

The beach at Tranquility Bay / Jolly Beach is probably the nicest beach we saw on Antigua. We've traveled the Caribbean extensively and we were still impressed. They have a few free chairs but we had to pay a vendor $5ea for chairs a couple of days. There is nothing to see snorkeling from this beach but it's a great place to swim.

Castaways beach bar is right next door on the beach. It's a little pricey and service is hit-and-miss, depending on who's working (Charmane rocks tho!). Happy hour is 4:30-6:30 daily.

Also, do yourself a favor and read the news before you go and get an understanding of current events. There were two shootings in St. John (one at the cruise ship duty-free shops) when we were there. I mention that only because you need to remember that caution is prudent wherever you travel - even if it is a sunny vacation destination!

In summary, If you're looking for adequate accommodations and a stellar beach, you'll love Tranquility Bay. If you're looking for a resort atmosphere and a young, hip crowd, you'll be very disappointed. The whole Jolly Harbour area is quite stuffy.

Yet again a wonderful stay at Tranquility Bay....we love it there. All the staff are lovely and cant do enough for you.....Maria, Felmina, Dawne, the lovely lady security guard (is it Veronica?) and all the other cleaining staff and maintenance staff and especially the men who rake the beach every single morning.
The apartments are very clean, very very spacious and very well equiped.
Its an easy stroll to the supermarket and other shops and all the lovely restaurants. Castaways is great value and the staff there are all lovely. Its well worth a trip to Shells - the static double deck bus fish and chip restaurant just a short walk away.
We will be back and certainly reccommend it.

First of all, it was very difficult finding a hotel for the week of February 17 since there was a sailing race and a holiday in the U.S. We requested Tranquility Bay through Interval International a year ago and three weeks before our trip, there was nothing available. After calling Interval, we were able to purchase a getaway. Why we weren't able to get this room as an exchange is still a mystery but apparently, it's from a different inventory. Anyhow, I was happy to get a two bedroom apartment for $1000/week.

Upon arrival at Tranquility Bay, I was a little disappointed by the lobby. It's a little shack and made me wonder about the rest of the hotel. The grounds are nice but there are signs of neglect, there are pot holes on the road and dry grass patches. Our room was very spacious with the two bedrooms and a full kitchen with a gas stove and oven. It was room 220 and apparently it is the show room. What you have to know about this resort is that there are NO ROOMS WITH AN OCEAN VIEW. All the room are facing the mountains. Look at the map on the internet and you will see the layout. Our room had a nice big balcony but we were facing a few shrubs and the patio furniture was starting to peel. The furniture was all bamboo and dated, the kitchen and the bathrooms were renovated and very nice, the beds were comfortable but the bedspreads all had old stains on them. My first impression of the place wasn't the greatest.

The beach on the other hand is beautiful. It is very long with private villas on one side and the Jolly Resort on the other. CocoBay is also on the same beach. The beach is very quiet, the sand is soft and the ocean is pretty calm and a beautiful aqua colour. The only beach that had nicer water was Long Beach on the other side of the Island were you have the Pineapple Resort. We rented a few beach chairs there for the day at La Tartuga Restaurant which was well worth the trip. To get back to our beach. There are not many beach chairs, maybe 30 for the entire hotel and there are about only five palapas and a few palm trees. You have to go to the beach before 6:00 am to get a palapa and chairs. There won't be anything after 7:00. My husband had to drag chairs from the pool at 7:00. By the way, there is no pool at this hotel, the pool is shared with the jolly Harbour resort which is next door. The pool has very few chairs as well and shows signs of aging. The chairs have plastic straps and a lot of them were missing some and covered with dirt. The towels were worn out and stained. I did get a few better towels during the week. Don't go to this resort if you want to feel special.

We did a lot of research on the best place to stay on the island and honestly, Tranquility Bay is a Great location. It is on one of the nicest beaches in Antigua, it is quiet and close to everything. We rented a car but honestly, we did not need it. Everything is so close. There are great restaurants on the marina which is a nice 5 min. walk. Milini's has great Italian food and is located on the marina with a beautiful view of the mountains. Right next door on the beach is Castaway's, a casual restaurant were you can wear you flip flops and look at the sunset while having the catch of the day! If you want to eat at home, there is the Epicurean grocery store 5 minutes away but it will cost you. A jar of Nutela was 35 A.C. about $15 U.S. We brought some food like bagels, jam, peanut butter, Nutella, wraps, vacum packed cold cuts, olive oil, vinegar, salt, pepper, sugar, garlic, pesto, pasta and frozen stuffed chicken breasts and ice packs.

My experience at Tranquility Bay was a good one although I prefer going to an all inclusive. This resort is about a 3 star in my opinion if I compare it to The Gran Bahia in Dominican or the The Barcelo in Mexico. If I had to go back to Antigua, I would try to rent one of the villas on the beach with a few other families or try to get one of the little villas in Jolly Harbour. Coco Bay Is probably one of the nicest resorts but it is for adults only, we had a child. The Sugar Ridge is also gorgeous but that one is for adults only as well. We considered renting a private villa with a pool as well in a gated community but in the end we were happy to be on the beach. In all fairness, it was a wonderful vacation, the beach was gorgeous, the restaurants were very good and everything was close by. In the end, it was worth it for what we paid but I would not pay the asking price for this place. If you want a quiet vacation that feels like home, this is the right place!

Tranquility Bay was wonderful. This was our first island vacation we usually cruise and stop to islands. The staff was very friendly and helpful throughout our visit. The rooms were spacious and generally clean. The grounds were kept up nicely with beautiful flowers. From our room it was a short walk to the beach and use of Jolly Harbor facilities including kayaking, sailing and use of their pools. There was a lot of security around, and it was comfortable to walk around on the grounds both day and night. It was very easy to book tours - most picked you up at the gate and returned you. There are many options for meals -but were somewhat confusing to us - we did however figured it out by the end of the week. It is best to ask for clarity to prevent confusion.
Our only problem was getting a beach chair. You MUST get up by 6:30 to reserve a chair with your towel - which is provided by the resort. Also the beach is very crowded on days cruise ships come in. Overall it was a very enjoyable vacation.

We stayed in Suite 214. The suite was generally well appointed, comfortable and clean. However, there were some annoyances. We could hear the people next door in the living room, though we did not have issue in the bedrooms. The shower in one bathroom hardly worked and one of the faucets in the master bedroom also did not work. The only oven was a toaster oven, so cooking was limited. On the beach, which is truly magnificent, there were so few beach chairs that you could not get one unless you went out before 8 am. With all of this, we had a very nice and restful time in a very pretty spot.
