“Amazing Location”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 27, 2011

This place is exactly like what we'd been told, only better. The resort was beautiful on the outside and OK on the inside. Rooms were fine for sleeping but you would not want to spend a lot of time in them. Balconies had amazing views of the beach and grounds, bathrooms were not that great, beds were comfortable. Service, while not up to western standards was always with a smile and staff tried to help whenever they could. Dinner was mediocre and felt like our only option (nothing in town). Breakfast was nice with eggs to order, french bread, strong coffee and lots of Vietnamese options.

Our kids loved the trampoline and pool. The beach was absolutely incredible: warm water, empty, soft sand, coconut palm-lined. We spent one day snorkeling with Rainbow Divers and had a great experience despite the cloudy weather. We were told other people had problems with sand fleas but we did not experience this.

Can't imagine Con Dao will remain this sleepy for long. Six-Senses is here and I'm sure more resorts will follow. We felt lucky to see it when we did. Stayed for only two nights which was just about right. Much longer and we would have gotten tired of the same food and lack of options in town for the kids.

If we came back we'd bring friends for the kids and a suitcase of snacks.

This report belongs to the "Con Dao Resort" only - don't mix up with other ones having similar names. We stayed in the main building for 5 nights in Dec.2010. On our first night we noticed that the duvet covers and the pillow cases were not fresh ones but from the previous guests! Next morning we complainant that on the service desk - do you think somebody apologized or even cared for that? No one cared about it - they even haven't noted down our room number. We have thrown afterwards the whole bedclothes on the floor hoping the room-cleaner will exchange them - that's helped at the end, at least two of three pillow cases were changed. The rooms themselves were very scruffy and the bathroom is musty. Bathroom equipment is partially broken, e.g. our wash basin drainage was broken that the wastewater flow out to the floor. Of course we mentioned that on the service desk, they promised to repair that. Of course nothing happened when we came back in the evening. We complained that again next morning - they lied us again that they will care for it. The day after of course again nothing happened and we gave it up with the service at all. Later I helped myself by placing the trash bin below the broken drainage for the remaining 3 days. You can image how it looks and smells. The staff at the service desk is absolutely unwilling and disinterested to to care for guests needs. It's not about that we were white tourists and they don't like us, this is at least not the reason for the s*** service - we talked to another Vietnamese couple spending their holidays on this isle as well and they experienced almost the same cases as we. So this hotel is even worse for native people, than you can imagine how about western tourists. Last but not least it's worth to say that the food at the hotels own restaurant tastes quite good - but note that best is you order everything you need, all your drinks all your food and your dessert at one go - because after the staff have served you they will forget about you until they bring you the bill.

We were exicted about visiting Con Dao. We researched and chose this resort. We emailed serveral times but no response so finally went through a travel agency.
We were booked in a $67.00 room which after a mix up of dates, turned out o be a $87.00 room (but they forgot to tell us until Day 3). Construction next door meant no early morning slepp ins OR naps unless you can sleep through drilling, hammering AND lots of noise.

Very nice rooms with really spacious rooms.

Includes breaktast but this is not really a plus
Coffee sucks and no real milk...only condesed or soy.
Orange Juiice is lemon neon...flavoured water at best
Meals are really cattering to locals...not western.
Can order omlettes but can you really eat for more than a few days?
Fruit is only watermelon and really bad local fruit.

The restaurant is really bad for dinner...suppposedly the best.
We only eat chicken and veggies.
The chicken came -- all bone, really bad
Veggies and rice....boring and plain...no sauce, spice or anything good.
Blah, blah...
we ate pork and beans in our room the last night because the food was so blah.

Some facts that should help you get an idea about this hotel :
- contrary to all other hotels on the island, the staff does not speak english. It is impossible to communicate the basiest things ;
- the service is not customer oriented : the staff is so lazy ;
- the bathroom is very old, simple and malfunctionning ;
- the linnen was not clean
- presented as the best restaurant in town, is is the worst vietnamese food I have so far tried.
- no comment on the white wine served at room temperature;

You could call the Con Dao Resort average. Vietnamese average.
Rather old building that has seen renovations just on the outside and the lobby. Once you're in your room it's too late anyway. There is an odd, mmoldy smell in the rooms and the bathroom is a chamber of horrors.
The staff is very moody and the food is meh. Half of the things on the menu are "het roi". The other half is inedible. You might wanna try their special coffee there, "ca phe ia chay", diarrhea guaranteed. The absolute hit there is a "deep fried chicken wing". You get something that looks rather cooked than fried and it's not even through. One cut revealed a stream of blood coming from the veins of the animal extremity. We were in a funny mood, so we decided to complain. They really were that consequent to redo the job. On the same chicken wing. We were amused, but decided not to touch the thing. They on the other hand decided not to charge us a fortune for the untouched meal, which we found rather surprising.
But unfortunately, you'll have to stick to the food there, because it's still better than the food served in the local "restaurants". We were recommended a visit at "Quan An Tri Ky", which must be a rough translation of "The Garbage Dump Bar & Restaurant". You should try one of ten chicken varieties on their menu. Too bad they won't serve them, because they supposedly don't have chickens, although we saw dozens of chickens on the market and running around elsewhere. Anyway, if you have the urgent need to flush out your intestines, try and eat something here.
If you want to stay free of bodily complaints, you probably best take a whole load of instant noodles with you or buy them in the local "supermarket".
On to the facilities. There is a swimming pool. Too bad it was closed due to "repairs". Too bad there wasn't anyone to be seen that was doing anything that remotely resembled something with fixing the pool. You still could swim in the sea though, if it wasn't for the bands of fishers that roamed around aimlessly even though this was supposed to be a private beach.
On to the fishers. Now these are some crazy folks. What we first thought to be zombies, turned out to be fishers from the mainland who are forced to stay on the island due to rough sea and weather conditions. The difference to zombies however is marginal. They wander around aimlessly, mostly in groups not below 3 people and have a strange style of movement. It wouldn't be so apparent if they had motobikes though.
On to the activities. There are lots of tours to choose from. Too bad half of them can't be done due to "rough weather conditions". Well if the weather back then was rough, then I don't know what they call a storm, probably "super rough" or something like that.
You can get some historical input about the place thought as well as some nature stuff but it's not that great. Best stay about 3 days and then get out of there.

With the exception of the receptionists, the staff was belligerently lazy. Bad service, bad drinks & an greasy, cold, gelatinous breakfast, of which there was little left half an hour before end of service.

I have mixed feelings about this hotel. It was the most luxurious place of the four hotels on Con Dao island: nice grounds, pool, on the beach. Large clean room with ocean view and jacuzzi in bathroom for US$55. Not many non-Vietnamese tourists so the staff doesn't speak much (or any) English. Restaurant was pricy and service was often poor. Tour organized by hotel was good - after climbing a steep mountain, we saw and fed wild monkeys - however the guide said the hotel didn't treat the park rangers with much respect. Still a nice place to relax... I'd eat elsewhere.
