“Great stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 7, 2014

We really enjoyed our 3-night stay here. We had a sea view bungalow (not right on the beach), which had a lovely terrace for relaxing on. The breakfast was fine, dinner was really good (recommend the squid stuffed with pork). The mattresses were firm (but I prefer that to soft) and pillows comfy. They gave us a free transfer to the airport which was good. Overall we found it a pleasant place to stay.

My husband and I spent 9 days at the Sea Star and enjoyed it very much. 5 nights at a beach bungalow, and 4 nights at a sea view bungalow. Both were lovely and clean, with a functional air conditioner and hot water shower.

The main attraction at this resort is the beach. It is easily accessible and kept clean by the gardeners on staff. The beach has lots of lounge chairs and tall shade trees, which I need for my sunburn. One of my favorite attractions on the beach are the fruit ladies who carry baskets of mangos, pineapples and coconuts to sell to tourists on the beach. They aren't pushy, but will come over if you wave at them.

The location is great. Right on the beach, but within walking distance of several restaurants and the main town. But not so close that it's noisy. In fact, the most noise you will hear is the surf and the geckos,

One feature we enjoyed is that the resort rented motorbikes for us to use. They were in good condition, and at a very reasonable price,

On the down side: The mattresses and pillows were not comfortable. Both were hard, The breakfast menu got old. The pho for breakfast was good, but having eggs cooked to order would be a welcomed addition. A good road map of the island would be very helpful for those who rent motorbikes,

Overall, we really enjoyed it and would love to return.

Stayed at sea star for 13 days .We were given sea view bungalow no 13 but we asked to be moved because of construction work on a new hotel next door.We were moved to sea view bungalow no 18 which was behind the reception building .We found this one to be quite adequate in size .Of course the bed was firm but Asian beds are , but the room was kept very clean with a constant supply of clean towels and bedlinen everyday. We were unfortunate in that a new bar/ restaurant is being built at the hotel right next door to its .restaurant so there was always a little construction work taking place always at breakfasts time that between 6/9 am!We think that it won't be long before it's finished so no worries
The resort is well kept with nice gardens and a beautifully clean beach .
The restaurant supplies quite a reasonable selection of food at breakfast and the selection at lunchtime and dinner is excellent .
For the price we paid its good value worth a visit .Any room is nice especially the sea view bungalows .

My daughter and I do not share a room so were very happy with the last 2 rooms available - in the little tower block in the gardens @ $46 per night each. Of course you are paying for the location, but what a location! The beach area is perfect, kept very clean, with safe netted bathing area of the ocean and lots of palm trees to give welcome shade. Downside I would say is the beach beds - quite old (not a problem) but incredibly heavy! Made it really difficult to move them around but I suppose it also stopped anyone from trying to steal them!
The general location is great, about a 20 min walk into the town of Duong Dong, which we only ventured to one evening, just to try a meal at the night market. Actually we were disappointed in that, not the fish market, but the meal we had. The other nights we ate at Sea Star's restaurant and had delicious, simply cooked Vietnamese food.
I read complaints about the quality of the breakfast. I can't think why. My daughter and I both enjoy softly fried eggs for breakfast and as soon as we requested them, they were provided. There was plenty of choice of fresh fruits, pastries and some really nice-looking Pho each morning. The staff in the restaurant are all extremely personable and helpful.
We didn't have a problem with the mattresses, maybe we are just used to hard ones but we both slept very well. And I loved that you could put a card on your bed saying that for environmental reasons you would be happy not to have clean sheets every day. Our rooms were cleaned immaculately every day, I couldn't fault the girls.
We were there for New Year's Eve and were incredibly impressed with the huge amount of effort all the staff put into moving the whole restaurant onto the beach. They strung up fairy lights and built a pretty large bonfire which had an amazing zip-wire lighting system (Health & Safety in this country would have had a fit) - we all thought it was great seeing this fireball whizzing across the beach to light the main stack! And the buffet they provided was fantastic. I don't know whether Sea Star's party is well-known but it was certainly very well attended by far more than just the residents. Good for them.
I would certainly recommend friends to stay at Sea Star.

Room Tip: Although the bungalows would have been nice, the tower block rooms are very good and overlook the se...

Moved here from an even worse hotel in Phu Quoc. From the outside it looks great, and on the whole it is. Had a Beach View Room as they are detached and probably more private than being on the beach. 50% + of clients are Russian as is the norm in Phu Quoc.

The Good:
Great location, near town & other restaurants.
Lovely beach, the best part of Duong Dong.
Good restaurant (apart from breakfast).
Nice looking rooms & bathrooms.

Not So Good:
Beds obscenely uncomfortable. Others have mentioned this but they have to tried to be believed. I like hard beds but something about these mattresses makes them the worst I have ever slept on. The floor was more comfortable!
Pillows dire.
Plumbing done by amateurs, no stack pipes so constant toilet gurgling all night long.
Staff not up to the usual Vietnamese friendly standard.
Breakfast very basic, cold food, 2 hour old fried eggs, broken toasters, etc.

We arrived on Phu Quoc with no reservations and picked Sea Star out of the Lonely Planet. Our Garden Bungalow was $56US a night (we only stayed one) which I thought was a bit steep.

Yes, they have lovely grounds, and yes, the front verandah on the bungalows was quite nice but the beds were rock hard, our fridge didn't work and the only mirror (other than the small one over the sink) was right next to the bathroom door - a door that had a window with no blinds on it!

Location (vs further down near Le Veranda and a large cluster of more budget friendly digs) saves about 20 minutes of walking to get to the night market and some of the great restaurants on the main road.

So, if you are a budget conscious traveller who still appreciates the niceties, I would stay further down the beach at Than Kim or Phuong Binh - the landscaping isn't worth the extra bucks and if you really don't want to walk you can take a round trip taxi for about $5 from the other places to the night market.

Also, and this is just random what the heck?? in my mind - they have signs saying they are Eco friendly and that's why they have solar hot water (which, was excellent) however, what is Eco friendly about needing to let the water run for 3 minutes before it gets hot? There should be a water recovery system in place to make up for that. Also, providing free teeny bottles of water to guest vs offering free distilled water just adds to all the plastic rubbish on the island!!

We stayed in a Garden Bungalow which was lovely. Sea Star is located at a part of the beach where there happens to be a good supply of shade. Of course there is lots of sunshine too, but carrying those great heavy lounge chairs around is not a simple matter!
Buffet breakfast was included at the Sea Star Restaurant, right next door. The servers there are very attentive. Say hello to Khan there. He is very friendly and works hard to take care of the guests.
Staff at the resort provide excellent service and everything works! Our room was impeccably clean; bathroom modern, shampoo provided. The WiFi signal is strong everywhere, even at the Garden Bungalows, because they have routers placed throughout the resort. We rented a motorbike to get around. Sea Star Resort is not really within walking distance of Duong Dong. It is entirely fine to walk along the beach to other restaurants if you don't want to rent a
bike. I would love to stay there again anytime!
