“The best place in Phu Quoc”

We were walking looking for somewhere to eat and stopped by May! The prices are great and they have a beautiful view of the sea... All the tables have a grill and the plates that we had were made in that! It was. Fantastic! Very good flavor! Our attendant was Dong and he has a very good english and is very friendly. It add a lot of positive points to the restaurant. He offer to us motorbike rental and boat trips without being boring! He just offer and left us! We admire his attitude! Besides that he could explain. Everything about the plates that we ordered...
We had a great time at May! Thanks Dong!!! :)

“Fresh seafood specials are the best & great price!”

This restaurant is just 4 doors down from La Veranda on the beach. Great views for sunset, but do wear bug spray for evening mosquitos. They are out around 5-6:30. We learned that in Koh Tao.

Hubby loved the curry chicken, but ask anyone and the rest of us agree that their super fresh seafood specials are the best! Snapper or my fave is the shellfish combo with tuna steak. Seasoning simple & super tasty!

“Best hotpot we've ever had!”

Our last night on Phu Quoc and in Vietnam we decided to try something outside the hotel, and a short walk down the beach found us at May. We'd passed a couple of others on the way, but liked the look of this one, and the specials board, so decided to give it a try. First thing my wife noticed on the menu was a seafood hotpot for two. We tried these a couple of times 11 years ago on our first visit to Vietnam and loved them. We tried again this time around in Hue, but the result was very disappointing.

I was reluctant at first, fearing a repeat of our Hue experience, but she who must be obeyed was insistent. So seafood hotpot it was. And what a great choice it turned out to be!

Out came the battered old table-top stove and the hexamine tablets, and a cardboard box as a shield from the wind to get the thing lit. Closely following was a deep pot full of hot stock surrounded by a very generous amount of raw squid, fish, prawns, and a plate of local herbs and vegetables that could have fed an entire village. We sipped on our Saigon beers, watching while 4 staff members tried to get our stove lit. Finally we were set, and once the stock was bubbling proceeded to add noodles, seafood, herbs in vast quantities, stirring briefly before transferring to our bowls.

I know we provided great amusement to the staff, locals and other diners as we tried to eat what's basically a soup with nothing but chopsticks, be we didn't care. From the first sip we knew we were in for a real treat. Simply put, this was the nicest hotpot we'd ever had. The stock was full of flavour, the seafood and vegetables were fresh and delicious, and there was so much of it that even with our best efforts, we couldn't drain the pot.

If the rest of the menu is as good, then May is a winner. For us, sitting at our table on the beach, with gentle waves breaking literally 10 feet from us, this was the perfect ending to 3 hectic weeks in Vietnam and Cambodia. And, including drinks, it cost us less than $US10.

“Go for the Tuna Steak”

Although I can't recall an actual bar, May Restaurant and Bar does make a mean cocktail. The place sits in on a lovely stretch of beach and is surrounded by the Viet Thanh Hotel property. May, does a great breakfast omelette, with excellent coffee. But come back when the sun is about to set for a real treat, the tuna steak. Served in a mild to medium spicy sauce, the tuna might just be your fondest memory of Phu Quoc Island.
