“Probably Wouldn’t Go back”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 14, 2012

We chose this hotel to celebrate our anniversary as we had seen it was noted as one of the top romantic hotels in Barbados. I will say that the atmosphere is very calming and does have charm. When we booked we thought that the fact it did not have a beach would not be a big deal, but really would rather have paid more for a beach access without having to take an overcrowded shuttle back and forth. I will say the food was excellent though and staff were very friendly 99% of the time. Overall though, I would book somewhere with beach access.

The staff at the sugar Cane Club were very friendly and the service was great throughout our stay. The room was lovely and nice and cool (it was very hot and humid in early July). The food was great although we did decide to eat out most nights just to see a bit of the island. Its a little out of the way, but the shuttle bus to Mullins beach was regular, and the glass bottom boat tour was really fun. I would recommend the Sugar Cane Club o anyone looking to relax.

We booked this hotel knowing that it as not on a beach but knew that the hotel ran a shuttle bus regularly to Mullins beach nearby. Ooh dear!! What a big let down for a caribbean beach :-( we are used tomthe beautiful beaches of Antigua. . . But our experience of beaches in Barbados were disappointing to say the least. Grotty loungers, litter and traffic noise as it's hard on the main road. Nothing tranquil or idyllic about it!! We hired a car to explore the island and travelled around the Coastal roads. Sadly, it is near impossible to even see the Caribbean sea due to the vastly ghastly built up areas that are beach front. The hotels and other properties have greedily taken up the beach front.
Fortunately the hotel is pleasant and the food was very good. The hotel staff are friendly and always helpful. The spa offers the best pedicures ever!
Stir crazy?! This hotel would be fine if for you if you go on holiday and stay stay stay at the hotel. . experiencing Caribbean culture and getting out and about is what we and we know many others enjoy. . . I'd suggest Antigua for the best beaches, great food and music. We won't return to Barbados.

Room Tip: Upper levels so that you get a glimpse of the sea and the sunsets.

Thank you for your favorable response to the Hotel, and we are sorry to hear that Barbados did not meet your expectations. For future visitors to the Hotel, our complimentary shuttle service will drop you off and pick up at to your choice of Heywoods, Speightstown, or Mullins Beach.
Heywood’s Beach is a beautiful beach at the front of Port St. Charles marina. There is excellent snorkeling available in certain areas of the beach, great sandy bottoms, and amazing views of the Marinas yachts.
Speightstown is known in Barbados as one of the most Historical towns of the Island. Today, it thrives with many small shops, restaurants & bars, fruit & vegetable vendors, a lot of History and small town life! From here you also have access to a major bus terminal, which in effect can get you to almost any corner of the island.
Mullins Beach! One of the most famous beaches on the west coast. This is the place to relax in the sun or shade of the Casuarinas and Palm trees, take a dip in the ocean, venture out on a jetski or choice of water sports. The beach bar is a great spot to grab a drink, snack, lunch, or evening sundowner.

We had the most amazing holiday at the SCC. The staff are second to none, they are so helpful and obliging and really go that extra mile !!
This was our first visit to the caribbean and we those Barbados because we wanted to go somewhere where you could experience the culture without any restrictions or fear. Barbados ticks all the boxes, the people are so friendly and can't do enough for you.
We are so grateful that our first experience of the Caribbean was such a positive one we would not hesitate to recommend Barbados and especially the Sugar Cane Club :o) x

My wife and I have recently returned from a fantastic 10 day stay at this excellent hotel and we will certainly be returning. We have visted Barbados several times over the past 15 years, always staying at very expensive "exclusive" beach front hotels in Holetown on the west coast. We decided this year that a beach location was no longer a priority and decided to try the SCC. The location is a little remote, set on a hillside probably a couple of miles from the nearest tourist beach (Mullins Bay), but the hotel does run a shuttle service to and from the beach several times a day. The standard of accomodation, quality of food and service is excellent, Quite frankly, I'm amazed at some of the more negative recent comments, as the SCC offers outstanding value for money compared to the beach front hotels on the west coast who only get away with charging the rates they do, purely based on their location! Simply, If you want complete relaxation this is definitely the place to go. If your priorities are a beach on your doorstep, bars, restaurants and clubs within walking distance, then look elsewhere. If you do go to the SCC and fancy a change of scenery one evening, do try the Fish Pot restaurant, a short taxi ride from the hotel. The food there is terrific and quite reasonably priced. One final tip: DON'T bother going to Speightstown, there are a handful of shops but more geared to locals rather than tourists!

Returned for a second trip and almost everything was excellent again. Staff in reception, bar, gardens, housekeeping and spa still superb and friendly. Addition of Sandy's chattel restaurant was brilliant. Unfortunately there are a couple of restaurant staff who let the rest of the staff down, not helpful and could not smile, everything was an effort for them. Exception as usual was Sade who is undoubtably the star of the hotel. Would we return for a 3rd time? it would depend on future reports about the restaurant staff improving.
After Roy's very serious illness it was great to see him as his normal self even accounting for finally making an honest women of his now wife, best wishes for the future to both of them.

Room Tip: All the rooms are good and some appear to be being refurbished. Won the lottery? then I would try th...

I wasn't going to write a review for this hotel because I didn't want to be negative, but perhaps I will help someone make a decision about where to stay. I will be very brief. If you are looking for luxury, pampering, exotic food, a hotel with a beach....this is the wrong place. You get what you pay for. If I went again I'd stay in St James and pay the extra money for someplace luxurious, but that's just me. There were a lot of people staying at this hotel who loved it, who swore they'd never stay anywhere else and who return year after year because they think it's great value and they don't come to Barbados for the beaches, they want to quietly lay by a pool with a book. I guess it's a matter of taste. When I booked my flights to Barbados I imagined beaches, platters of tropical fruit, traditional music, and a raging nightlife. You won't find any of those things in Speightstown and the surrounding areas (including Maynards where this hotel is located)
