We stayed at the Jonic Hotel Mazzaro for 4 nights for our first wedding anniversary. Going through the different reviews helped to be prepared on what the hotel had to offer so let me go into the different things.
The price is good given that the hotels in Taormina are quite expensive. One has to consider though and factor in, that if you are going to visit Taormina several times, its 6 euros two way.
Location is spot on - just 3 minutes from the Funivia and 5 minutes from a very nice Lido. There are many good restaurants nearby as well.
Rooms are average. We had a room with seaview which, in our opinion, was quite nice. The size was comfortable enough and the room itself was clean. Yes the furniture is out of date and might need replacement but then again, if prices need to stay low, there's not much management can do. It's true that the walls are very thin and you can hear every movement of your neighbours but it was not much of a problem for us as they were quiet. It's true there is a busy road but, with closed windows, the noise was minimal.
The bathrooms might be a matter of concern for some as the showers are very small. We have travelled to a lot of places, including South East Asia and the India sub-continent, and this must be either one of the smallest, or actually the smallest shower we ever saw. For us it was fine, so if you are relatively thin or average it's ok. But whoever is on the large sizes will experience problems for sure.
Breakfast was ok, nothing impressive. There was 'packet' orange juice, coffee and tea on request, water, two types of cereals, plain yoghurt, eggs, 3 or 4 types of cakes, 'packet' croissants, butter and jam, slice bread and buns, ham and cheese. So if one wants to make a fill in in the morning it's possible. From my end I would suggest eliminating a cake or two and substitute with some fruit (we heard it's quite cheap in Sicily).
The service was very nice and cordial. One particular receptionist (the one who was most for the night duty - the more mature one), remembered our room number from the first time he saw us which I really liked. We were also given a room where to store our luggage on check out given our flight was in the evening.
On the whole - a very good experience.
If you are travelling from Catania get the Interbus from the airport. The ticket is only Euro 7.90...
