Have just got back from a wonderful 2 week stay at Shanti Maurice and am already thinking when to go back!
Shanti Maurice is located on the south coast which is a lot less touristy and less developed than say the North which was great for us.It makes it even more perfect-very tranquil and relaxing!
Apart from the obvious beautiful location the real standout here are the staff, all of who made our stay that bit more special.
Nothing was too much trouble and they are some of the loveliest people I have ever met.Service always came with a warm smile and you are made to feel at home instantly(although if this was my home I would never need to go on holiday!!!).The level of professionalism is outstanding.
We stayed in one of the ocean view junior suites located at the far end of the hotel with a beautiful view of both the gardens and the beach/sea-20 seconds walk and you're on the beach. The room was great with one of the comfiest beds I have slept in and thanks to Sheila and Aujanee, spotlessly clean-loved the towel animals on the bed too!In fact all of housekeeping were excellent-if you get any laundry done during your visit it comes back to you in a little hamper with all your garments pressed and tied up with little bows-a very nice touch!
We were on half board during our stay which works out very well if you like to go out and explore the local restaurants for lunch (as we did for half of our stay roughly) but if you are the type not to venture out of the hotel much then I would def suggest going Full board as the restaurant prices are def on the steep side!(approx 50/60 pounds for lunch with 2 main dishes and a bottle of water!)
The food however is very good ranging from mauritian/creole cuisine to south african and european(using fresh herbs and vegetables grown in their own garden on site) and obviously loads of fresh fish which is delicious. This can be enjoyed in 2 restaurants-Stars and Pebbles-you can order from either menu in either restaurant or indeed even at the bar or anywhere outside and the service is fantastic.
Alternatively they also have the Fish and Rhum shack once a week on the beach-which was our favourite-lots of fresh grilled to order meat and seafood with a huge selection of salads and fresh fruit and sorbets-(def try the chilli sauce grilled Lychees-sounds like it shouldn't work but is delicious!!!) They also once a week have grandma's kitchen(which we sadly missed)where you can go for dinner at the house of one of the staff member's grandmother's and pick up cooking tips and recipes as well-will def try this next time!
I have to give a special thanks to the chef for opening the kitchen an hour earlier just for us on our last day so we could eat a lovely dinner before we left-amazing service and very much appreciated and when coupled with a free of charge late check out it made leaving even harder!!
For the fitness minded (as we are) they have a good sized gym with a range of cardio machines and free weights and David and Ravin are on hand to provide advice if needed or to train/stretch you.
There is also an extensive spa for all manner of treatments in very serene surroundings. We however just used it for the jacuzzi sauna and steam which are free to use.
Activities wise, there are not a huge selection although i'm told more are on the way but we liked it this way as we like to get out and about and explore the island(of which we did extensively!)
You can easily arrange day trips/activities such as swimming with dolphins, walking with lions, visits to tea and rum factories, quad biking, bike tours or pretty much anything else that takes your fancy through the concierge.
A few very nearby things to the hotel that you should def do are to visit La Vanille nature reserve (crocodiles, tortoises galore!) and eat at Chez Rosy-Le Gris Gris restaurant in Souillac -amazing home-cooked Mauritian food (I recommend the fish and aubergine curry!)
So to sum up I would like to thank everyone at Shanti Maurice for making our stay so wonderful-beautiful location, mouthwatering food, faultless service and most importantly amazing staff
