We are just back from our 10 days vacations at Mauritius, where we have (luckily for us!) chosen to stay in Shanti Maurice resort. The hotel is located in the South of Mauritius, which is the divine part of the island - not touched a lot by infrastructure of hotels, shops, restaurants and bars, where nature is still as remarkable as it is supposed to be on such an island. During our trip we even didn't bother ourselves with going to the North, where instead of the wild island ambience you see the typical tourist scenery.
Though Shanti Maurice is a rather small resort, it is the member of the Leading Hotels of the World, which makes them keep up to all top 5* standards in product and service. The fact that the hotel is not a vast resort makes it very unique - after the second day every staff member were calling us by name and made us feel very special. Every day we were greeted and welcomed by somebody from the management team, which is always around to ensure the guests are satisfied and comfortable with their stay. All our individual requests (such as food for our 1.5 years toddler, special food requirements due to my pregnancy, special set up in the room, etc) were met with accuracy, friendliness and care. We have stayed in numerous 5* resorts and hotels, but it is really exceptional to see the service level as it was provided during our vacations in Shanti Maurice!! Every staff member never refused any of our requests, it was unbelievable how people working at the resort are attentive and friendly!
The room is a bit minimalistic, but the bathroom was huge, with the outdoor shower, separate shower and bath tub, we also had the terrace with the direct access to the beach (only 10 m away!), which is very convenient and provides a stunning view over the ocean from the bed....the quality of the beds is amazing, we haven't had a better sleep for a long time! Was it the fresh air, the quality of the mattresses or the vacations mood....I guess a combination of those! Sunsets at Mauritius are beautiful and you can see them every evening from your room as sun goes down on the beach side, we have not missed a single evening to capture the sunset beauty!!
The hotel has 2 restaurants, which are available for lunch and dinner, the breakfast is served a la carte with a sufficient selection of breakfast items. The food itself was great, the menu is absolutely fantastic and fits every taste, from Indian specialties to African highlights. Several times during our stay there were special evenings - like the African Grill Menu or Rum n Shack evening on the beach, Fish Dinner, etc, which we have enjoyed a lot. We have been staying with half board (breakafst + dinner) which was the right choice, as you can choose your dinner dishes from the a la carte menu of 2 restaurants, which gives you a great choice even for the whole 10 days vacations time.
During our stay we have been going out several times to see Mauritius - one day tour around the South part of island which was very interesting and allowed to see the main highlights of the island in one day (we have booked through the concierge the tour with the car and the driver BMW X6, which costs the same as the rent of the car through the car agency for 1 day!). As well we have been to the zoo & safari, which was exciting for our toddler, visited several parks, waterfalls, etc. But what was really unforgettable is a private one day cruise on a catamaran....we went to see dolphins, were snorkelling, had a barbeque on the boat, stopped by on the wild island, etc....we were overwhelmed with the views and emotions that we have received during this trip! The boat house is located inside the resort next to the hotel restaurant and they provide you will all the information about activities, as well they can amend any trip depending on your requests.
We have as well tried the kids club and left our 1.5 years old son there 3 times with a babysitter (Marie-Josee), which was very smooth and the kids club itself provides everything needed for entertaining the child of any age.
And the last but not the least was the spa (when you arrive you think that you are in the jungle!)...during our 10 days stay we have been to spa 4 times (reservations required, as the spa is quite busy!), which was wonderful - Ayurvedic treatments and Africology massages were very good, as I am pregnant 6 months I was recommended special treatments and the doctor paid special attention to the selection of oils, therapists, etc. The hotel is all surrounded by beautiful gardens, exotic flowers and trees, it is a very nice resort to enjoy a walk and admire the nature.
Overall I would highly recommend to take 10 days vacations at Mauritius, because it allows you both to see the island and experience all the activities every second day and every second day enjoy the beach, ocean and the spa without going out from the resort. Thank you once again to every staff member, who was taking care of us (Kooruna, Manoushka, Prinya, Marie-Josee, Krishna, Jason and many many others!), we are looking forward to be back one day soon!
I would go again for the lower floor with a terrace and direct access to the beach.
