“Another great holiday”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 24, 2012

We returned to the Jalsa for another 3 week stay, again in November travelling with Mercury Direct on an all inclusive deal. Once more we had a superb time. Little had changed. The gardens, swimming pool and hotel continue to be immaculately kept and if anything, the food was better.
This is a small, tranquil hotel on the side of a turquoise lagoon in one of the prettiest , quieter parts of Mauritius. Come to chill out, not to party every night, though some of the infrequent entertainment was way better than OK, especially Jean-Luc, a singer/guitarist . Anyway, it’s hard to beat sitting in the poolside bar chatting over a whisky and coffee after supper. And as far as we are concerned, the 10pm all inc. cut-off time helps preserve the ambiance.
Things to do: stroll along the beach in either direction (bliss), catch the bus into Centre de Flacq for the Wednesday market, hire a car, take a speedboat trip, try a massage at the spa, but given the chance, don’t miss the horse racing in Port Louis on a Saturday. Go early, check out the fish and vegetable market, lunch by the harbour, then on to the racecourse at Champs de Mars. It’s a spectacular setting and the atmosphere is electric. You’ll be amazed at the sheer quality of the whole experience, particularly the horses. A taxi from the front of the hotel will set you back just over £40 for the day, so sharing helps.
Lastly, the management and staff. These are the hotel’s greatest strength. You could not meet friendlier or more helpful people. Sanjay, the General Manager and Richard, the Operations Manager, should be proud of the working environment they have created.
Sunita kept our room pristine, while Annan, Dhiren and Prakash behind the bar kept our glasses full. The staff in the restaurant were great fun and took care to ensure we were being well looked after. Nothing was too much trouble.
Thanks to all of you at the Jalsa Beach for a second, great stay.

This review was from 2010 but I thought it was important as reading some of the reviews and some of the descriptions in the holiday brochures could give the wrong impression. We knew the hotel was going to be quiet but it was the quietest place I have ever stayed. At one time there was only one other english family there with us. What made this holiday for us were the staff. The bar staff were so friendly as were the girls in the spa but most importantly the restaurant staff were fantastic (Baichoo you are still remembered and talked about often). They found out that my daughter was a very fussy vegetarian and made a point of coming out to see her and asking her what kind of food she would like to eat. She loved the food in the hotel and was very happy for the whole holiday. The staff even came to see us off when we left with a small picnic to keep us going on the way to the airport. This was really appreciated as the all inclusive finished before we left the hotel. This I thought was a bit cheeky as we had not had a full day on arrival so we assumed, incorrectly, that we would be covered until we left.
The hotel is out of the way but the bus stop into town is right outside the hotel and if you speak to any of the hotel staff they will tell you some of the best places to go. The bus conductors were also really friendly and made a point of showing us which bus stop to go to to get back to the hotel. The people in the town were also really friendly and helpful and after asking directions in pizza hut the chef, who was going on his break, actually walked us directly to the place we wanted to go.
The hotel is quiet and relaxing although I wouldn't say that there is a lot to do for young families however the people of Mauritius were the friendliest we have met anywhere in the world. They genuinely couldn't seem to do enough for you and before the cynic says that was just for a tip we received help from people who would not be receiving a tip or who had already received a tip.

Room Tip: We had two poolside rooms and were very happy with them both.

Package
We booked our package through Makemytrip.com, but on reaching Mauritius we realized that most Indian travel sites (yatra, Thomascook, makemytrip and the likes) outsource their holidays to Sea Side Holidays in Mauritius. So if possible do approach Seaside Holidays directly for a better rate.

Hotel:
Jalsa is a great place to be at. It is secluded from the city - but then that's the idea of a honeymoon isn't it? Additionally, it has a wonderful lagoon attached to it with water which is around 3-4 ft deep. The hotel management does offer Kayaking, snorkeling, paddle boating in this lagoon which is good fun! When it comes to room selection, do opt for the deluxe rooms - they are bigger than the standard size and also offer a great sea view. My only gripe was that during our week's stay at Jalsa - the bed sheets were changed just once, of course the bedding was done - but no change of sheets. Sheesh!

Food:
Be ready to try out continental cusine - I really enjoyed it. For the Indian in you who wants his fare of spice they do have 5 Indian dishes during each dinner. Apart from the Indian fare, during our stay they served a different cuisine each night - chinese, Italian, Mauritian etc

Sights:
Most holiday packages are tailored for a tour of North Island, South Island, Ille aux cerf. I do recommend going in for the optional catamaran cruise (additional expense). This is an all day cruise to an island - where you're served unlimited drinks and bbq! Do carry lots of sun tan lotion though since you'll be over exposed to the sun. Additionally, have a light breakfast to avoid sea sickness

Room Tip: A deluxe room on the second floor is highly recommended. Pick room 219 if given a choice. It has a g...

The hotels employees are excellent. Nothing is too much trouble for them, from the cleaners , to the chefs ( cooking special meals when my daughter was unwell) , to the hotel management . Lovely hotel, lovely people, beautiful island !!

My wife & I stayed at the Jalsa during our honeymoon trip in Dec 2011/Jan 2012 week in the Executive Delux rooms. When we were planning the trip through makemytrip.com, I had checked the horrible reviews which guests in the past had listed on trip advisor and I am glad to report than none of them are really true. The hotel is located on a private beach which is almost like a heavenly lagoon. The moment you enter the Jalsa, you get an awesome view of the beach. The ocean near the Jalsa is shallow and you can easily literally walk almost 100 feet from the beach into the sea. It was really awesome. The hotel does not too many rooms (which is good) so you almost have the entire beach to yourselves. You almost feel like a celebrity on your own private island....!!

The next noteworthy point to mention about the Jalsa is the staff..... the trip would never have been so good without the really friendly staff at the bar (Kevin & Dhiren were awesome), the receptionist, the concierge, etc. The hotel room was perfect and well maintained.

I feel the only thing you would need to be aware of if you are planning to opt for the Jalsa is the food - dont expect 5 star food at a hotel which itself does not claim itself to be of that class. The menu is quite repetitive and they dont really care too much about room service. I once called for a can of cola in the afternoon and was asked to collect it from the bar myself....!! The pasty chef is nothing to talk about either - he tried making jallebes (an indian dessert sweet) for new year's dinner - he failed miserably. For dinner some nights earlier he made bitter jelly for dessert. It tasted like tasteless jelly in bitter water. When I went to him to give him the feedback, he told me it didnt matter whether I liked the bitter jelly because one other guest liked it..!! I walked away and didnt bother with him anymore. Guess he must have been too tired working during the new year week and needed a vacation too to chill....!!

Other tips for budget travellers on the mineral water bottles, buy them outside the Jalsa at half the price as mentioned earlier by other travellers. Its really pointless burning your pocket on it at the hotel. Jalsa does not provide any complementary drinking water in the rooms so get them from a shop 5 mins walk away from the hotel when you arrive.

Food apart the hotel is good. I only wish they improved the menu (and maybe the chef's) which would make this good hotel a great one.

Room Tip: Chose a executive delux suite near the beach... its awesome

I stayed a week here on holiday. I found the spacious hotel accommodating in all aspects, right from the receptionist to our servers at the restaurant. The private beach is calming and clean. The pool is great. Since we were a group of 25 vegetarians, the restaurant used to set up dinners in a separate dining area for us, and arranged a special buffet with piping hot dinner. The Dodo Bar had a great hotel party too.

I loved Jalsa, and hope to go there again.

It was wonderful in 2010 but visiting for a second time in 2011 gives you a clear view on the improvements that have been made by this very receptive and responsive management team. The arrival of an experienced International Chef has dramatically improved the quality and variety of the food from good to excellent.
Having listened to what entertainment their guests would like, manager Richard satisfied all tastes with a well chosen programme which ranged from Sega on the beach and atmospheric reggae (from the talented Jean Luc) to an accordian player for the French guests and nights of peaceful chat over coffee and drinks - all ending at 11.00pm - a time which suited this cinderella who loves a good nights sleep!

The atmosphere is more akin to a family run hotel with staff keen to satisfy your every need - we were remembererd from last year and our table from the previous year was already set up and unofficially christened the Coy/Jackson table. Get to know the staff by name as this personal touch recognises their excellent service.

You need to be "All inclusive" as the hotel has the most wonderful, quiet position with fabulous views over the lagoon and beaches to walk on either side of the hotel's beach. Racehorses train in the lagoon early mornings, cane fires are lit in the evenings and the mountains finish this remarkable backdrop. But there are no local bars or shops close by.

Rooms are generous and well serviced with great beds. Many people liked the ground floor rooms with their terrace leading straight on to the gardens and pool as well as large bathrooms. We loved the third floor rooms (good lift avaialble) with their generous balconies and in our case - Room 319 - a very large terrace in additional to the balcony (not to mention the glass bathroom!). Small quibble - more furniture needed on the terrace to maximise its potential and hooks on the inside of the bathroom door along with a slightly cooler air conditioning system.
The mix of guests this year was slightly different - French tour groups, Indian Honeymoon Couples and English couples travelling independently - but all enjoyed the ambience and facilities provided; lovely pool, free canoes, kayaks and pedaloes along with the on-site spa and gym.
As well as the organised trips, use the local buses for the experience and visit Centre Flaq market on Wednesdays - hire a car and enjoy exploring the Island while driving on the left hand side of the road and loose your shirt at the Saturday horse racing in Port Louis.
Visit this hotel - you will not regret it!

Room Tip: Rooms closest to the sea have the best view - 317, 318 and 319 on the top floor Ground Floor rooms...
