“I am now a Kantarian”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 27, 2012

A Kantarian is not a character from Star Trek it is a confirmed guest at the Kantary Bay Hotel. The Hotel stands at the base of a ridge back hill forming a promentry. On one side is the previously reviewed Cape Panwa Hotel on the other is the sister hotel The Kantary Bay. Financial necessety drove the decision to change hotel but it is not one I will ever regret. We paid less than £400 for 15 nights bed and Breakfast through Alpharooms and whilst the rooms are not as luxourious as the Cape Panwa Hotel they are superb value for money and very spacious. Walking into the Studio room you have the bath room to one side and a kitchenette on the othe featuring microwave toaster kettle cups plates and utensiles.. Moving forward there is a "living" area with couch , chair and tv unit complete with flat screen TV and media unit. You drop down two stairs to a "sleeping" area featuring a double bed wardrobe and dresing table. The whole thing is set off by sliding patio doors onto the balcony.
The Kantary Hotel shares all the facilities with the Cape Panwa so the private beach , resturant and bars come within your compass.
The Hotel caters for retirees so we bump into many people we have met in previous years. You can book an off season month for around £550 which includes bed/breakfast, transfers and a weekly trip into Phuket town to do shopping and banking etc.
The jewel in crown is the roof top pool on the Bay Wing. The palce is only enhabitable after 4pm when the sun is going down and it is getting cooler unless youn want to sunbathe in baking heat.
In the Cape Panwa review I have extolled the virtues of the local "Mom and Pop" resturants that flurish around the Hotel. To this list I now need to add "On The Beach" and Sabai Sabai (2) which is on the main road into the resort as oposed to Sabai Sabai (1) which is on the hill between the Hotels.
In Summary this is a fantastic holiday makers hotel. As a holiday maker I want to sleep, dress and get ready to go out when on holiday so certain standards need to be met. The Kantary meets all my requirements at half the price of the Cape. If you want a luxury room go to the Cape I recommend it, if you want a comfortable room to prepare to go to the beach and get ready to go out at night for food and drink the Kantary ticks all the boxes.

Room Tip: High floors mobility permitting . The Bay wing has an elevator to the 3rd Floor and stairs to the 4t...

Great peaceful location with easy access to great beaches, bars and restaurants. Very friendly staff. The rooftop pool is great for sunbathing and great views. Russell's sunset bar is just around the corner for some quiet drinks and the facilities of the Cape Panwa hotel are only a 5 minute bus journey up the hill. Fantastic.

5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 25, 2012

we stayed for one week but met with people staying a month or that repeatedly returned on long term trips.

after we booked the holiday, I wrote to them on their email from the website and asked for a quiet room with nice view, they responded very quickly and said i had allocated a lovely room with sea view. when we got there we'd been upgraded from a studio to a one bed apartment for free and I can tell you we would have been happy in the studio but our apartment was amazing with views all around (room 342), we were below the pool and there was a small amount of disturbance when the early shift set out the chairs etc in the pool area, but slept through most of it anyway.

the staff speak well in english and are ready to jump into action, they always greet you and can tell immediately if the greeting was it or you need help. i called them meercats because that is what they were like.

we had a hire car and always found a way to park but it was off peak so don't think you'd find it so easy peak season.

the area itself is quiet and we found it difficult to find the local restaurants interesting, but the indian around the corner was a different take on things and not bad, the hotel restaurants were ok, but for some reason I didn't find the seafood restaurant appealing although i was told it was good, i just didn't fancy it. the italian was not bad food and service was A1. the restaurant about 150 yards or so on the corner opposite the navy base wasn't very good in my opinion but other guests say it it good, I had steak and afterwards told local thai steak that is not imported is not so good so maybe I made a bad choice, but what was annoying was the staff all taking fag breaks in the front entrance which puts me off altogether.

The room and hotel itself has been well used but spotlessly clean.

we found that the free internet in reception worked in our room so we didn't have to pay the premium they asked for to use it in the room.

we went to the cape panwa on the regular bus, it was great too. take some bread to the pier and the fish will swarm up.

both hotels are great for the pool and beach in CP atmostphere, so if that is your thing and you can't afford the luxury cape panwa then don't hesitate to book into the Kantary Bay, because let's face it you are on a budget and for the money you will be happy enough. although on the CP beach there are staff serving drinks direct to your sunbed which will cost a bucket, so perhaps you will take your own when you realise you can't keep up with the rich set.

Phuket town is not what you think it is, no shops really - what a dissapointing squaller town and never want to go there again. the other beaches on the west side of the island are worth a visit if you can get a hire car get over there to see what you are or not missing out on.

a good restaurant nearby is the point bistro (on the left a couple of miles up the road towards Phuket) it is amazing food - up in my top 5 restaurant dinners ever - it is that good.

if you don't want to pay lots of money for laundry, look carefully on the right towards phuket (within a mile i think) and you will find a laundrette and you can put washing in a machine and sit with a book for 30 mins while it washes.

if you do ask for a one bed apartment, the room next to us has a very good sea view and a washing machine on the balcony rm 343.

breakfast was really good compaired to the other 2 hotels we stayed in thailand, they had catered for all tastes and it was hot too.

be aware that many travellers to phuket are russian who are ok, but the chinese are very noisy in the restaurants, just note that this is what it is like there.

enjoy.

Room Tip: 343 has a washing machine, but 341 and 342 are good sea view one bed apartments. some of the rooms...

This was truly a high standard Hotel. We booked deluxe room and was not disappointed, our room on 5th floor, full of modern euipped facilities. The manager always asked and met any request for us as well. Staff at lobby worked really enthusiastic, eager to help for luggage. We got easily for hanging outside, chilling out. Some local restaurants nearby offered the best rate for guests on special occasion, we had an delicious meal at the restaurant nearby recommending by hotel staff. SO far, Just stay here for funs and nightlife was really a high point.

I have just returned from a very, very enjoyable holiday at this Hotel. That this is my fourth stay at the same hotel speaks volumes for the fantastic experience it is every time I stay there. I might add I fully intend to visit many many times in the future. It really is that good. If your idea of a holiday is peace and quiet away from the usual tourist crowds in Phuket then this is the hotel for you. Very economical, very spacious well equipped rooms, extremely attentive and friendly staff. If you need to venture out for shopping, sight seeing and the like then it is very conveniently located to Phuket town, other resort areas and places of interest.
I have stayed in many different styles of accomodation on Phuket over the years and this is my number one choice by far. All the facilities of a sister 5 star hotel, only 5 minutes away by a free bus that leaves every 15 minutes are available at no cost to Kantary Bay clients.
I hope my review puts you off since I don't want to make this superb hotel so popular that I have difficulty booking in in future

We can see why so many keep on returning to this hotel year after year. The staff are all so helpful and friendly each time you go through reception. Rooms are more than sufficient and are kept very clean. Excellent bus service over to the sister hotel which runs very frequently. Good location for other restaurnats in the area and good location for a very relaxing holiday. Our third visit to Thailand as the people are so nice and helpful. Don't forget to try a Thai massage while you are there too. Highly recommended

We have just returned from 18 fabulous days at Kantary Bay. The location - only 1 hour from airport is ideal for a quite, relaxing holiday. The staff are very professional and helpful - from the Front Desk, Porters, Gardeners, Breakfast Staff, Housemaids, Reservations and the Duty Managers - nothing is too much trouble. The rooms are large and always cleaned to a high standard. The surrounds to the hotel are beautifully kept - pools, foyer, gardens. The entrance via the stairs - especially at night - is stunning. The breakfast staff are always very attentive and cheerful. Transport is not a problem - taxis are out the front, the hotel runs a bus to various shopping locations and the local bus from the Aquarium will take you into Phuket town and then you can catch buses to many locations, including Patong Beach. There are plenty of places to eat - we mainly go to Sawsedee (next door), Uncle Nans and Laem Seafood. This time we found a great massage/beauty house - The 3 Monkeys - half way up the hill to Cape Panwa. Very clean premises and the ladies were very obliging. At night there are markets along the road for easy shopping. Altogether just a fabulous place for that quite, relaxing and peaceful holiday. We are already planning our next visit in 2013. 2.

Room Tip: 3rd, 4th or 5th floor facing sea. '"A" rooms have larger balcony.
