“Waste of good money!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed July 23, 2010

We booked a week in a 'luxury' caravan at this site...first impressions of the park were not good it was a complete dump, when we arrived at the caravan we were very disappointed it was a bog standard caravan, we had booked through hoseasons and at nearly 500 quid for a week we were not at all happy, I am not one to complain for no reason but I felt this warranted a trip to the reception...the receptionist explained to us that there were no luxury caravans on the park and the price we paid was for a 'better area'! what a load of rubbish, I will be taking this up with hoseasons. The shop was rubbish, hardly anything on the shelves, the takeaway closed at 8.30pm, which seems daft and is inconvieniant, the food was average but overpriced. The whole complex was just run down and in need of a complete make over. The kids park was ok, our 4 yo daughter enjoyed the Animal Farm and the Train. I would certainly not recommend this resort or site for more than a long weekend as there is nothing to do, personally I would not recommend it at all. Very Disappointed

We booked through "The sun" at the beginning of the year,as we have done for the last 4 years.
We have always been fairly happy with our previous locations, accomodation etc and as this is the only way we can get a holiday at the moment due to finances, I always check the parks online reviews first just to make sure everything is ok. when I booked the reviews didn't seem that bad, and as we have never been to this part of the country and we have family who live in Carlisle it seemed perfect, plus we didn't want to travel too far with young children.
In total we had to pay £159 to stay at the park, but this included the initial deposit (as we went in July it was £15 per person not £9.50) the park/club passes the gas and electric and the laundry. this was to stay in a caravan not one of the chalets.
we arrived around 5 pm as we had stopped in Bowness and Windermere along the way (which is beautiful, and in hindsight we should have stopped there for our holiday).
Our satnav guided us to what in actual fact is the back part of the park, where there is a small residential sight almost like mobile homes, half of them were very unkept and to the side of the park there looked like what I can only describe as derelict industrial type buildings. Really ugly and not what we were expecting.
We drove round trying to find the reception and eventually had to ask a resident who said we had to drive through the town to get to the actual entrance, which we did. Driving through Silloth was like driving through a run down, forgotten about, ghost town, not a lovely quaint victorian town as described.
When we managed to find the entrance it didn't look to bad, as you go through the first thing you see is all the chalets, all of them are stained black with bright red doors and dirty net curtains, they all need a good lick of paint and didn't look that impressive.
As we continued to the reception and main complex we noticed the site was very green with lots of trees/bushes etc which was quite nice. However the main building just looks awful, it looks tired, dated and theres a grotty looking telephone box to greet you too.
We had to go to the nags head pub to get our passes, keys etc as we arrived later.
The staff seemed friendly enough although the pub itself left alot to be desired.
We found our caravan which was fine, seemed clean enough and spacious, unfortunately the grill didn't work on the cooker, and as we found out when it poured down one of the nights the skylight was leaking heavily too. We reported these problems and in fairness they were fixed as soon as possible. A word of advice though if you can, take your own bedding as the ones provided are a joke and not worth the money you pay for them.
Paper thin duvets, old lumpy worn pillows and duvet covers that have seen better days. The actual mattresses look fine but i didn't sleep very well at all the whole time we were there.
The park itself again was dated, everywhere just looked like it needed a good scrub and a coat of paint, the crazy golf was pathetic, just a few brick partitions, the park/swings didn't look too bad and we didn't bother going to the farm, as we heard it was a waste of time.
The pool and changing areas are in desperate need of modernisation. The tiles are grotty the paint is flaking off and generally has a grubby feel about it.
There are three bars in the complex, which is unecessary for it's size, a bistro, a very small amusement arcade, a shop which is dark and gloomy, a laundrette, a soft play area and a large tented area in the middle with benches and worn out looking cowboy statues ???.
We never ate at the complex so I can't comment on the food but the drinks prices were ridiculous !!!
The night entertainment was ok as far as the kids were concerned, a bit repetative but they seemed to enjoy themselves enough, after an hour or so we were ready to go back to the caravan. I did win £25 at bingo one of the nights, so that wasn't too bad.
We didn't enjoy ourselves and we certainly didn't get that holiday experience we went for. I think Hagan's need to really take on board the comments that people have made, and modernise the complex, a whole refurbishment is required and maybe a nice coffee house and a proper outdoor seating area would be better than all the pubs.
We travelled out of the park everyday just for something to do, Maryport was the nearest place, but again theres nothing there, Same with Whitehaven (apart from the Rum story which was good). we also went to Gretna green which was nice.
There has been many mixed reviews on here, and I suppose everyone is different.
We aren't snobs looking for 5 star accomodation, just a normal hard working couple with two kids wanting a break from the daily grind.
I just feel that we could have gone somewhere much nicer, had a great time and not felt disappointed from the moment we got there. We were happy to leave the park, and we won't be going back there, and certainly wouldn't recommend it to anyone.
We normally go to haven sites, so thats probably where we will be off to next year.
That said, for what we paid including a two night stay in carlisle we could probably get a nice cottage somewhere !!!!

I read some of the reviews after booking through Hoseasons and thought damn... wrong choice, so with three 5 yr olds, a 7 yr old & a 12 yr old in tow I wasn't hoping for much but you know what it simply isn't as bad as people make out. Yes, it's pretty far away from anything really interesting to do and I think we'd have struggles if booking for 2 weeks to keep us all entertained. The site is a little run down but it simply isn't that bad so try and remember it's a caravan site not a luxuary hotel !

The entertainment at night was as expected - a little bingo (not that bingo is my thing !), some time for the kids (dancing & a few games) and a bit of entertainment for the adults. It's more or less the standard format for these places & it certainly wasn't any worse than other places we've been to.

The kids enjoyed the kids club in the morning, going on the train ride round the plark, the farm wasn't great but kept the kids entertained for a couple of hours (including the walk to it), the indoor play area (jungle gym) wasn't huge but that didn't matter to the kids who had a ball in it, the outdoor play area is actually one of the better ones I've seen and the all-weather football pitch wasn't covered in stones - we played some footie & tennis on it - no net of course though there are courts but they were over the other side of the park.

The accomadation was clean, not sparkling, but clean and the couple of minor problems I did have to report (kink in one of the bed frames & a cupboard door which was loose) were all fixed within a few of hours. If you want to go on holiday and sit back to moan & groan then you'll probably find things to grumble about, but if you accept that it's a caravan park and are prepared to join in and have some fun then it simply ain't that bad !

Just back from this cess pit. The place smells of sewage and cant belive the price of drinks.
£1.50 for a kids fruit shoot!!!!!
You expect to pay slightly more for alcohol but ripping kids of is just a joke.
The facilities are crap and the park is well run down.
Not safe for young kids as too many entrances and exits.

Avoid this place like the plague

Boring does not cover the place, again booked with sun and nowhere near anything, no beach just stones and concerte, on site entertainment i think a morg would be better.
Shallet or shack was cleanish, but very uncomfortable. Washing facilites shower etc awful. Cooking facilites slow and worn out.

Just very misleading from information given and advertisement.

We spend so much money going else where to entertani children which you shouldnt have to do with a holiday park/.

Never again

We spent 4 nights, we booked through hoeseason which stated all lively park well that is a joke apart from the play park the kids were bored. The farm had no one there to show any one around or go on the mini railway. The kids entertainment at night was a joke, an hour of simon says. 4 year old didn't understand this the 9 year old was bored with it. The swimming pool was run down with the paint flaking in the water.
The place needs totally upgraded very run down. As for direct beach access there is no beach just stones.
Only thing we couldn't fault was the accomadation it was spotless.
