We were recommended this restaurant by the owner of a nearby B&B we were staying at.
She described it as "a feast of duck" and boy, was she right.
To be fair, though the food was predominantly water bird related, it was far more than just duck as we were about to discover.
The restaurant had an unusual system whereby the price was fixed at 35€ pp which included all food and drink from what was a set menu with a wine to accompany each course.
Now we had eaten off similarly arranged fixed menus at such places as Le Quartier Francais in South Africa where each course was paired with a glass of wine. Expecting similar, we were initially served with a glass of Kir to kick off the evening and all seemed set. Great that they left the entire bottle of white with us too!
When the first course arrived (Foie Gras) we were somewhat taken aback that it was to be washed down with a perfectly paired montbazillac, again, served by the bottle!
Henceforth this was the theme of the evening. They serve a course, we get another bottle of wine.
Next up a Pergourdine Salad, gesiers, some various cuts of duck or goose (I think) served with a bottle of local red.
Then a main course of Magret de canard grillé or confit or (out of left field) lamb, provencal style. These were accompanied not only by a red wine sauce and 2x mushrom saucessauces, but a bottle of the local reserve red.
Stuffed at this point, the cheese board arrived accompanied by another bottle of red. Unlike previous cheese boards I have seen where you select say 3 or 4 cheeses and they cut you some, this board came with ooh maybe a dozen NEW cheeses, left for our consumption.
The desserts next. Perhaps 5 or 6 options which predominantly passed me by, though I must confess I opted for the profiteroles just to be a complete lardy.
To cut a long story shortish, coffee. With biscuits. Then a digestif of choice. Difficulty moving
Great service. Friendly staff. What an experience for 35€
I highly recommend you visit if you are staying South of Bergerac in the Montbazillac/Duras regions. Just don't go on a full stomach...
