“Worth the trip”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 23, 2012

Baigorry is only a little over an hour from either San Sebastian, Spain or Pamplona, Spain. It is worth the drive! Charming town and a lovely hotel. We stayed in the suite as it was the only room available and it was delightful. Spacious and comfortable with a deck overlooking the river. The restaurant is quite good although a bit high priced.

We stayed at Hotel Arcé at the end of July and just loved it.

We travelled by train from Bayonne to St Jean Pied de Port station, and took a 15 min taxi from there. (Taxis need to be pre-booked!)
We arrived to a beautiful hilly, riverside setting. The hotel itself is grand yet charming, with a tranquil, relaxing feel.

The staff were hard working and attentive without being intrusive. Nothing was too much trouble for Mme Arcé. She helped us out with walking maps and routes in English, arranged taxis for us and helped to arrange a fishing guide for the day (who we highly recommend – Monsieur Zill).

The room was beautiful and spotlessly clean with fresh flowers and a balcony with river-view. The pool area is great, with comfortable sun loungers, and the hotel provides towels for swimming.

The food was exquisite. We stayed on a half board basis and were treated to delicious, exciting meals. The breakfast buffet was incredible – bread, croissants, cheese, ham, eggs, fromage blanc, fruit, cakes, even crème caramel! And delicious coffee. We loved being able to eat breakfast outside by the river on the beautiful terrace.
The evening meals were sometimes slightly challenging (chilled melon soup, duck salad with foie gras, black pudding filo pastry parcels) but always delicious, and also enjoyed outside by the river, which is wonderful in the evenings. Highlights were baby squid cooked in its ink, a trio of trout (fresh trout from the river), hake with ratatouille, and the wonderful local sheep’s cheese course every evening. The aperitifs and wines were also excellent and staff were happy to help with recommendations.

Our only gripe (which is nothing to do with the hotel really) was the church bell which chimes loudly on the hour all day and all night. We found it difficult to sleep through the first couple of nights, but did get used to it eventually.

It was a stunning place to spend a few days. Gorgeous hotel, surroundings and food and very, very relaxing. We would love to go back.

As soon as you come off the motorway at Bayonne it feels like you are driving in to another country. Gorgeous mountain scenery en route, small villages, typical Basque houses with brightly painted shutters and flower filled window ledges, numerous farm shops and fromageries. St Etienne de Baigorry is one of the larger towns and the Hotel Arce is at its heart. Fabulous location right by the river just behind the church (with regular bell ringing!). We stayed 3 nights.
Weather was mixed but when its hot, the pool is a lovely and, when its not so hot, the walking is amazing (but challenging). Our room was quite small and old fashioned in style but spotless and and very comfortable. Outside, the river terrace is delightful for lunch/drinks and the large restaurant is really superb - set dinner menus from 30 euros but you can just order individual dishes. Very good value for the quality.

This is a beautiful hotel set in a knockout location. The room was very clean and comfortable with a good bathroom, but small for the price we paid. I think we were paying for the view which was picture perfect looking over the river and town. The Terrace restaurant is also idyllic, right on the river under vines. There is a lovely swimming pool which we appreciated after a hot walk. The staff were friendly and accommodating. My husband really liked this hotel, although I thought it was fairly pricey compared to other charming hotels we stayed at in the region.

This hotel was a charming place next a beautiful trout stream. We opted for a riverview room with a balcony which gave us great views of the town, surrounding hillside, and the church. We arrived around 11 but our room wasn't quite ready so we were led into the lounge area. The lounge featured a great wood fireplace with somewhat rustic decor and you could tell that a lot of thought had gone into every piece in the room.

Our room had a king bed, with an antique writing desk, a bouquet of fresh flowers, small bench, balcony w/ sitting area, and bathroom that was completely decorated in white, save the water fixtures. The staff was absolutely wonderful and so attentive. They took the time (during busy lunch service) to detail the area and make a map of wineries to visit.

We had breakfast, lunch, and dinner here as well. The breakfast was great, probably the best of the three. The lunch and dinner menus are the same and offers 2 separate 3-course menus (with 5-6 items to pick for each course). Everything was good, not great. Actually the pastry chef there is great; desserts were fantastic.

As we checked out, the manager handed my girlfriend a fresh flower for May Day. It was just a very classy place, with a high attention to detail.

Room Tip: I highly recommend a river view w/ balcony that also gives you a view of the medieval church and tow...

The Hotel overlooks the river, we loved leaving the window open and falling asleep to the sound of rushing water each evening The rooms were basic but quite comfortable and very clean. This is an ideal location to explore many of the surrounding villages and the Basque countryside. If you stay here, do hot miss dinner in the hotel dining room, a truly wonderful meal and dining experience
