“Sunday bbq session the best”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 19, 2014

Recently enjoyed the Sunday bbq session at the Secret Garden. Arrived for happy hour and continued on till late in the night. The bbq dinner was delicious with both thai dishes and bbq meats and salads. Entertainment was easy to listen to and even better to dance to. Would recommend it to anyone wanting a great night out.

Hi, I took guidance from the Trip Advisor Excellence Awards and booked about 18 months ago, been back two more times since. For me it’s just right. Right on an un crowded beach, huts basic but with everything including views of the sea. Comfortable beds (very unusual for Thailand "The Land of Unforgiving Beds and Smiles" unofficial TAT Slogan), really great food, both Thai and European if you need a break from local. Relaxed atmosphere, Sunday Music Sessions with the who’s who of the islands expat community, daily happy hours as the sun goes down, happy hard working staff. Great value for money.

Give it a go and you will be happy you did. My happy place in the world.

Thank you to everyone

We checked in after an early flight from Bangkok, and arrived at the resort around 10 am. There was some brief confusion at the airport about our transfer, but a call to the resort resolved it quickly and without a problem. When we arrived, we checked in at the bar area, and our room wasn't ready yet. We had expected this, given that our flight was so early, so we packed bathing suits in an easily accessible spot. The resort provided beach towels and we spent a pleasant hour and a half or so lounging by the water with a drink until our room was ready.

The rooms were very nice; we reserved one of the smaller, one-room bungalows, and they're definitely small, but there's enough space for two people and a few small pieces of luggage. There was a small TV, in-room safe, and the bed was comfortable enough. The AC was a little tough to figure out; one night we froze, another we'd sweat, it was just hard to find a happy medium. The outdoor bathrooms are a really nice touch; being outside, they're very spacious, and it makes for a nice place to dry wet clothes. They are covered, though, and very well protected from a passing rainstorm.

We checked in on Songkran, and around noon, the party really kicked up with a DJ, a water station out by the road, and food and drink specials. This was awesome for about 4 hours; after an early flight, day drinking, and participating in the Songkran festivities, we were exhausted and wanted to nap, but the incredibly loud DJ made that all but impossible. It ended around 7 or 8pm, though, so we were able to get a quiet night's sleep. The rest of our stay proved much more peaceful, which was great. The bar has a nightly happy hour (2 for 1 beers and 120bht cocktails), and we spent a couple nice evenings enjoying the view of the ocean from the dining area and having a few drinks and some dinner. Dinner prices are a little higher than what you'd pay in the nearby, non-waterfront restaurants (there aren't many nearby), but the food is good.

Location wise, it's in a great spot if you enjoy the beach or like to dive; The Dive Academy is just a few meters up the beach. It's also quite easy to get around the island; we arranged a motorbike rental through the resort, and spent a nice day tooling around the island. We'd been warned to be careful renting motorbikes in Thailand, but renting through the resort was 100% hassle-free. We also had laundry done through the resort, which was definitely more expensive than had we just waited til we got to Phuket, but we'd already been in Thailand over a week and our clothes were pretty bad. The process was simple and the clothes came back perfect. There are several 7-11's nearby, which is good if you need an early breakfast, as the restaurant doesn't open til 8.

The only downside I saw was that it was a little hard to find anyone if you have questions or issues before 8am or after the restaurant winds down around 10-11pm. The place is absolutely deserted before 8am, so if you have issues with an early pickup, you need to have a phone to be able to contact whoever's supposed to pick you up.

Other than that, a lovely, quiet little place on the beach. We really enjoyed our stay and definitely recommend it.

We chose Secret Garden based on Tripadvisor reviews and are more than happy with the choice - our beach bungalow is very sweet and comfortable with a spacious indoor-outdoor bathroom, very good bed and a working AC. Staff and owners are welcoming and accommodating and the beach is fantastic: there are few on the islands that match it for swimming.
The whole place is designed with attention to detail and works very well, aesthetically and in terms of comfort: the restaurant and bar are on the beach are a pleasure to spend time and eat/drink/relax in.
Staff are all excellent as is the location, everything is spotless and has a great feel about it - we will definitely come back as it is our new favourite residence on the island.
Special mention goes to lovely Zan and Cran for the best massages we had during three weeks in Thailand as well as the complimentary lessons in Thai and the effervescent Danny at the bar for his kindness and a wicked sense of humour.

Room Tip: Beach bungalows are lovely and just a barefoot stroll to water, restaurant and massage bed. We were...

We stayed here in feb/march and were bitterly disappointed with the rooms, service and most of all, the location. To start with, the bungalows are tiny, outdated, smelly and there is no room to even step out of your bed.The bungalow at the back is spacious (I'll give it that) but it had a constant bad smell and the interior is something straight out of a bad 80's house.
Considering the prices its a bit of a joke.
When we checked into our room the AC was not working and we were forced to wait in the heat for the service team to show up. Since they were busy in our room and we had unpacked, we ended up spending almost 3 hours waiting for them to finish. We had hired a car for the day which we had to let go. The so called 'manager' was not in least bit interested and simply vanished..When we mentioned our ordeal to the owners we were shocked to find an email pushed under our door in the evening demanding an advance payment for our whole stay!
No apology nothing! I forgot to mention that we had already made a wire transfer prior to our arrival of 30% of our whole stay.
Needless to say we checked out the next day. Unfortunately my parents were just not up to packing & moving again so the stayed. The bad service and most of all the snooty attitude by (one of) the Dutch owners really spoiled our family holiday on Koh Samui.
Also, please beware that regardless of what they tell you, they DO take commission from the taxi drivers. Much cheaper arranging on your own. Also, there is nowhere really to eat around so you're forced to eat at their restaurant. Not bad but again, overpriced.
Please note: if you are looking for a nice clean quiet beach this is NOT the place
Loud (live) music most nights and the beach is just a tiny dirty strip of sand.
Maenam beach is lovely, clean and much better value for money when it comes to accommodation.

My friends and I loved our stay at Secret Garden, 3 days. The staff was very helpful in helping us find transportation and do tours. We were there for Songkran or the Thai New year and the hotel had a big barbeque and lots of water splashed everywhere. It was a great time. My friends and I wanted to avoid taking taxis everywhere so we opted to eat at the hotel restaurant for all our meals during the stay but it was delicious so wasn't a terrible choice. Great place to just hang out on the beach if that's what you are looking for. We also went to the Full Moon Party and the ferry and speedboats were not far. Highly recommend.
