“Some problems but great overall”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 17, 2013

The jungle setting of this hotel is really amazing, we grew to love it more and more during our stay. A jungle setting AND it's set directly on the beach, amazing.

We were given an upgrade to a huge apartment type room with private pool, small garden, kitchen, laundry room and outside shower AND outside bath tub next to the pool. The room was amazing.

A big drawback to this Anantara is the small size of communal areas. This includes restaurants, the bar (or lack of), gym. There was nowhere to relax that had aircon. People were actually sitting on 2 sofas in the library to keep cool before checking out.

The staff at reception were also below standards. When we arrived a few hours before our room was ready, we were told to wait but weren't shown around or told even where to go. When we asked where the bar was they directed us twice to the pool swim up bar. Not very helpful.

And on checking out they messed up our airport shuttle booking resulting in a high speed chase to the airport.

I would like to think these problems are connected to the fact that it was due to close for a refurb a few days after our stay. I hope that the new improved resort is up to usual Anantara standards now.

Dear Valued guests,

Thank you very much for taking the time to post a review, and please do accept our sincere apologies for the inconvenience encountered during your stay.
With the renovation, we have added extra air-conditioned areas where the guests can relax while waiting for their room or transportation back to the airport. There is also a brand new changing room, with sofa, tea / coffee set-up and shower for our guests.
Thank you very much for your feedback, and looking forward to welcoming you to our “new” Anantara Bophut, opening on November 16th.

Warm regards,

Manish Jha

We spent four nights at the Anantara Bophut Resort & Spa. The food was great and the pool was amazing. The view from the pool was breathtaking. Only a couple of minutes walk to Fishermans Village where the market is brilliant and great choices of bars and restaurnats. Wiould stay there again.

This hotel is the perfect place for wedding or honeymoon. I was pleasantly impressed with the size and decoration of the room, the bath tub overlooking the room was a nice bonus. The service was exceptionally friendly. The interior garden is like in a fairy tale. Food is overpriced though and for someone who really doesn't care about spending extra 25% it might seem ok, but to others it might make more sense to go to the Fisherman's village 150 mt away from the hotel and enjoy the amazing fresh seafood.

Room Tip: All of the rooms are overlooking the garden and at least half is having the sea view, either of them...

After having done extensive research of Koh Samui and Bophut hotels, and spurred by the consistent good reviews of Anantara, my sister and I took our children for a week at the hotel just before Christmas. We were not sorry. While the experience was not exactly "luxurious" and the hotel's small dimensions suprised us, our (renovated) rooms & balconies were pretty and the giant bed very comfy. There were lots of charming little extras tucked away in the closet like a beach bag & umbrella; an attractive breakfast area with delicious food & juices; and of course, the gorgeous garden. Our kids (7 & 10) enjoyed the pool and grounds, even though there were not many organized activities.

I would describe the hotel as being truly lovely visually, service oriented and comfortable, and after walking along the Bophut beach and peeking at other properties, it seemed to us that the Anantara was a cut above the rest.

Bophut -- low-key, relaxed and without the seediness of Chaweng -- is wonderful for families and I can't recommend it enough. We especially enjoyed the street food stalls and the Friday night food fair run by the locals for themselves. Every day we would find another little restaurant to try and most of them were good and not expensive.

On our last night we treated ourselves to a dinner at the Anantara's gourmet restaurant and were delighted by the tasty food, good-sized portions and calm ambience -- a perfect end to an enjoyable stay.

We booked a family 2 bedroom apartment for 4 of us but then our 24 years old decided to join in as well. However, the apartment was spacious enough to accomodate all of us, and our youngest (15 years old) slept on the sleep sofa in the lounge.

Having the washing machine in the kitchenette is a real bonus as was the large fridge to store food & drinks for the family.

On one night, at around 10 pm, there were fireworks display on the beach -either a normal event organised by next door hotel or a special celebrations. Either way, they are very loud and, although we enjoyed it, it could be a scare for younger children. In fact, these fireworks can be bought, alongside the floating Chinese lanterns, from local beach traders everywhere and not just on Bophut beach.

The Friday night 'walking market' is good place for food, as well as the usual tourist items

Our apartment, 407, was on second floor of a 3 storey block in the Anantara Vacation club section of the resort. The hotel section was closed for renovations and although I was informed of this, I had assumed that the vacation club would either have it's own, large pool or that the pool of the hotel would still be available for use as it is an 'outside' facility. Instead, the Vacation club pool is just a small, 'plunge pool' sized facility which I never saw anyone using. To be fair, I was informed as follows:
During Anantara Bophut Closure for renovation, from 16 April to 15 November, the following facilities will still be available for the guests staying in Anantara Vacation Club Bophut:
- Room service from 06.00am to 11.00pm with a limited menu
- All day dining at the poolside (same menu as room service)
- Fitness center
- Housekeeping as normal.

Activities available at the property, needing pre-arrangement:
- Kids Club & Baby Sitting service (24hrs notice)
- Dining by Design, special event (a minimum of 24hrs notice, depending on the number of guests involved)

Activities available outside, needing pre-arrangement:
- Tennis (24hrs notice)
What should have been made clear is that the large, infinity pool was NOT available.
I would have expected that there should be a free shuttle service to the sister hotel, Anantara Lawana for guests, at least during this renovation period, to have use of their pool& facilities there. Instead, I ended up hiring a car to take my family there on two days as it worked out more cost effective than taxis. Anantara Lawana had a really nice pool, beach and bar facility which we enjoyed. Was given a 15% discount on food/drinks.

I was also offered airport pick up before arrival - again, it should have been made clear whether this is complimentary or charged (and if so at what rate).

I would also have liked to have been given information, or brochure made available, about the loyalty scheme at checking in.

Once the renovations are completed, I expect the Anantara Bophut to be back to the usual Anantara excellence

Room Tip: Third, top floor of the Vacation Club 3 storey block have better view

Pros:
This is a very nice hotel with a beautiful garden. We stayed here in January 2013 and it should have been renovated and redecorated just after we left. Still the hotel did not look too old or shabby.
We got a gorgeous room with sea view and two large balconies. It was a traditional Thai design, very cosy, very comfy, spacious, clean, no complaints here at all.
The breakfast choice was very generous, tasty and fresh.
Everyone we dealt with from the staff was very helpful and nice and with good English knowledge.
The architecture is stunning, the garden...beautiful as written before, I loved walking in it.
We liked the location of the hotel, it is on the end of the busy street but very quiet and all the shops and restaurants are in the walking distance.
Cons:
The pool area was a little too small and the pool was quite cold, colder than the sea. There is no pool for kids and the sea has a deep infall right from the start so this is not an ideal place to swimm safely with little kids.
The kids club is located on the other end of the hotel, very far from the pool and was really nothing special, our kids didn't want to stay there. The swings and slides were plastic and only for the smallest ones so kids over 3 years didn't enjoy the playground at all.
