“"Nice but not 5 star"”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 1, 2008

We spent six days at the Anantara as part of our 3 week honeymoon round thailand. we were really looking forward to it and treated ourselves to a suite room. For the price and as the hotel was 5*we were expecting something really special.
Staff were very pleasant and friendly on our arrival and showed us up to our room, which was nice but not spectacular for a suite, was quite small.

The suite extras such as free drinks in the bar and laundry services were very good and the breakfasts were very nice as was the italian restaurant overlooking the sea.

Prices in the hotel were expensive but not too bad, there were signs in the room saying they would add 500bht per item to your bill if they found you had brought your own food/drinks into your room! The room service "tv snacks" were very good value and large in size! One thing we did find strange was that we kept coming into our room after the "turndown" service to find that our tv was on and turned towards the bed!
Overall a nice hotel in a nice setting and location with the very good fishermans village a very short walk away on the beach, but would rate it more as a 3 or 4* rather than a 5* resort

We stayed here for 10 nights in September and loved every moment. Although the sand is a little course and the sea not crystal clear the location is perfect. Just a short walk from the Fishermans Village where you'll find no end of great restaurants and bars. The only down side was that the sun loungers were a bit packed in and if you'd paid for bed & Breakfast but wanted it in your room you had to pay for it again (Yes twice)!!!?? my advice, go room only and pay as you go.

If you want to treat yourselves go to Zazen's for dinner if you're on a budget and want authentic Thai food go to Tong chai ( It's in the village, on the corner where the main road meets the road down to the pier) very friendly but I feel will be gone next time we go (the owner hinted this on our last visit!)

We went to the Anantara on our first stop on a 4 stop honeymoon to the far east, and what a great start. The hotel is hidden along a typical Samui town road. We arrived at night, in the rain I may add, you go across this amazing bridge surrounded by trees and plants over a pond lit with oil burning lamps, so romantic.

We were welcomed in the open reception area by one of the desk clerks who brought us cold towels and a freshly queezed pineapple drink, it was very welcome too. She sorted our details and room keys etc and then showed us all the way to our room which was on the 3rd floor.

All the rooms face the sea and I think all probably have a similar layout and size. There is a bathroom, with the biggest marble bath you have ever seen with a shower over it with lots of complimentary toiletries, a sink and toilet. The obscure glass screens around the bath slide back so you can watch TV etc from the bath. There is a hugh bed/futon, on a raised area in the bedroom area, it was really comfortable too. There was a TV with ipod link up etc, complimentary gowns, slippers and drinking water. There was a fully stocked mini bar but we didnt use this much, we just emptied it a bit to refridgerate our water. There is a safe in the wardrobe and ample hanging/storage space.

The room has a sea facing balcony, we didnt get to use this as it rained every day but the last we were in Samui, dissapointing but not the hotels fault.

Our bags were bought to our room by a porter very quickly after we arrived. The first and only problem we had was that the ipod jack didnt work, we called down to the desk and a guy was up fixing it almost as soon as the phone was put down. Fixed it straight away and was very apologetic.

We had breakfast included with our room which was in the restaurant located to the right of the reception area. There was a lot of choice, hot and cold.

We didnt eat in any of the other restaurants in the hotel although they all looked lovely, the choice and price difference just to walk into the village was far superior. We did order room service a few times, just chips and burgers when we'd been out etc, quick good service, expensive though. But we were on our honeymoon.

The grounds are stunning, looks much better in the sunshine too. There is lot of wildlfie around, the central pond has a lot of fish and even a stork. The beach isnt great, sand is very rough on the feet, looks lovely though. I much preferd to stay by the pool anyway, which is also stunning. It has a swim up bar and the view is great. There are loads of sunbeds and towels available and people taking drink orders. Its very quiet and tranquil.

This hotel is the best hotel I have ever stayed in for service, atmosphere and quality. I'd go back in a heartbeat. I have loads of pictures and video's just message if you want more information.

We stayed at the Anantara for 3 nights at the end of a two week holiday in Thailand. We though the Anantara was a beautiful hotel in an ideal location on Bo Phut Beach the quiter beach in Koh Samui. We had a Deluxe Garden View Room, the room was average size but had a huge bed and a beautiful bathroom with a huge bathtub, the balcony was also really nice and had a sofa where you could sit and relax.
We had breakfast at the hotel which was a good buffet selection, however we did not have any other meals at the hotel and chose to eat out. If you turn left out of the hotel's back entrance onto the beach there are some lovely restaurants where you can either dine on the sand by candlelight or eat inside, there is a particulary good restaurant called 'Peace' you will instantly recognise it by the large leather bean bags scattered on the sand where you can relax and have a drink by candlelight and look at the stars, you can also dine inside at the restaurant where the food is fantastic and really good value! The beach is perfectly safe to walk along in the evenings and is well lit, there are a few people who offer for you to light a big paper lantern to let off into the sky, which a lot of people were doing just a bit of fun but i'd reccomend!
Another option for an evening or lunch out of the hotel is to turn right and walk along the beach down to the Fisherman's Village where there are plenty of restaurants to choose from.
We hired a Jeep one day to explore the island we hired it from our tour operator which i would reccomend as you are fully insured with them.
The staff at the Anantara are very friendly as all Thai people are, we were given complimentary massages at the Spa, however if you want any further treatment it's quite expensive, there are plenty of places to have massages and treatments on the beach which are much cheaper and you also get a beautiful view!
I would reccomend the Anantara and we will definatley be returning in the future!

We stayed at the Anantara for the first 8 days of a month long honeymoon in Koh Samui. We were collected from the airport and on arrival were given a cool towel and drink in the library. The hotel was lovely and we got a bit emotional when we arrived. The room was great - we chose a 2nd floor room and were pleased with this as it seemed less overlooked than the garden rooms. The bed was huge and was decorated with towel swans, petals, a welcome card and delicious honeymoon cake. The staff were friendly but it got a bit much with them bowing all of the time!

We found the hotel really expensive for drinks and food so tried to avoid eating and drinking there (example - a young coconut was 140 baht at the hotel and 30 - 40 baht everywhere else). They add service charge and taxes to abything you have which works out an extra 17%. Also - if you bring your own drinks to the room and get caught there is a charge of 500 baht corkage! We chose to walk left out of the hotel onto the beach and walk to the coconut bungalow where they servied cheap food and drinks which was actually of an equal if not better standard than the hotel.

My husband and I spent 3 nights at the Anantara at the end of our awesome two week honeymoon in Koh Samui.
We recently had stayed at the Pathuawam Princess in Bangkok and the Chaweng Regent in Chaweng and to end up having such a bad experience at the anantara it was a dissapointing end to our beautiful honeymoon.
When we arrived at the resort there were renovations happening at the front (this lasted the entire time we were there), this was quite annoying as we had not been informed about this.
The gentleman that assisted us gave us a cold towel each, (no cold Drink) as previous resorts had, he checked our voucher for the room and was very adiment in receiving our credit card details.
Our room was very average, up 40 stairs which was terrible after a long day of sight seeing. As we knew the Anantara was a 5 star resort we were imagining our room to be fantastic but it was far from that. From our entire stay in Thailand the Anantara would have to be the lowest standard of hospitality and service we received.
Other disappointing things that happened while we were there was a two hour power strike I rang the front reception to ask what was happening and the receptionist was very very rude and told me it would be back on later. Our bed linen was Never Changed.
On check out we were not getting picked up until 6pm at night for our transfer to the airport, our voucher showed that we could have our room until 6pm but they pretty much kicked us out at 12pm, and then added elephant donations on to our bill 3 times. Once we checked out and payed our owings the staff could not care less where we were or our luggage, the staff were quite rude and unpleasant and I would not recommend staying there to anyone. ( The mosquito's were in hundreds and the food and drinks were way extreme in prices).
I selected the Anantara from this web site since there were so many great reveiws on it and it was a great disapointement that it did not meet its expectations. The fishermans village was also a disappointment with very dirty restaurants and low quality of food. If you want to really enjoy Koh Samui (Chaweng) is the place to be.

After a short transfer of about 15 mins from the airport we arrived at the resort we were given cold towels and a cool drink whilst we checked in. We were then shown 2 different rooms and given the choice of which we would like, we stayed in a deluxe garden room with a pool view which our terrace led out onto the pool so we didn't need to use the other entrance at all.

The rooms aren't huge but they are taken up by a massive bed and really comfortable bedding, the bath is big enough for 2 !

The staff were very friendly and nothing was too much trouble, our room was checked on 3 times a day and we were left daily treats such as chocolates and even a 'happy honeymoon' cake.

The pool was a nice size and never cold, there was always a sun bed available and someone to put towels out for you and serve you drinks

The food throughout the hotel was excellent, the food and drinks were expensive in comparison to local restaurants but that's to be expected in a 5* hotel.

We took advantage of our free spa treatment but then enjoyed massages on the beach which cost about £4 per hour and were really relaxing, as you walk from the hotel and turn right onto the beach the ladies there on the massgae beds are great.

In fishermans village there are plenty of nice polaces to eat and enjoy drinks, in the Sorroco Bar (formally the beatles bar) the owners are a scottish couple who serve excellent food, and you can enjoy live music and take advantage of their local advice and friendly nature.

The frog and gecko stays open late for all the sports fans !

We had an excellent holiday and would be back in a shot, highly recommended
