We stayed here for 8 nights at the end of June. Originally I saw it on a group website deal, but found I got better rates by booking directly with the hotel. The rates are really good if you book well in advance. This way you also get the airport transfer included.
The staff here are fantastic - so friendly, so welcoming, so keen to help. They try to learn your preferences so as your stay progresses they can anticipate your needs. Their mantra is 'cheeky with love' and they really do try to do everything with this approach. Not everything is exactly as it says on the website (at time of writing this review) because the hotel is new and changing and trying to improve when they see the need. So, for example, it says the combi in reception has the coffee bar in it. However, they found it was better to have the coffee being served from the restaurant so now the combi houses lots of info on tours/sights etc. There was also a 2nd restaurant about to be opened when we were leaving.
On the first night we were in a fantastic Love Jacuzzi room, top floor right at the end, giving privacy and great views. But it was 4 flights of stairs to walk up. Now I am not the fittest person on the planet, so I called the reception that evening to ask if there was another room available. They told me that they had been concerned about me too!!!! They didn't have an unoccupied room that night but did have a couple moving out the next day from a Love room that only had a few steps. It was much lower down the hill so still required the golf buggy for getting to and from the restaurant and swimming pool. However, the views were just as good, just slightly different. But if you are in a high room, with lots of stairs, you can take advantage of the room service - same meals as the restaurant at the same price - no extra charge for the room service!
While there, we took a walk around the complex and quite honestly, apart from about 3 rooms, the views are great from every room! The onsite manager told me they try not to put people in those rooms and use them for people arriving early to use until their room is ready.
The room styles are built in blocks, so if you have a Love room, then you are in one of the Love blocks. A block might only be 4 rooms, this is not cramped hotel conditions. Each of the Love Jacuzzi rooms has privacy from noise because there are no shared walls. I don't know about the Wow and Cozy rooms, but I think they are built in a similar roomy and private style. There are some Love rooms on the lower part of the hill behind reception but in front of the swimming pool and restaurant building - great views and, in my opinion, more private because they are not overlooked by the other buildings and pool and restaurant. The Love rooms higher on the hill, like every other room, have balconies that can be seen easily from the restaurant and swimming pool, and vice versa.
The Cozy rooms are located immediately behind the swimming pool and restaurant, so probably have the least stairs to access those facilities. The Wow rooms are located above and behind the Cozy rooms so have the higher views but are further from the restaurant and swimming pool. The golf buggy can take you to most blocks and between reception and the restaurant and pool building, but obviously a golf buggy can't take you up stairs, so if stairs are a problem let the hotel know when you are booking. A higher or lower floor doesn't necessarily mean stairs or no stairs because it depends where the entrance to each room is located. So, for example in the first room we were allocated (141), the room was on the top floor but the entrance to the block was from the ground - hence 4 flights of stairs. But the room we then moved to (121) was also the top floor but the entrance to the block was from the back and above, so it would be more stairs to the floor below. So, unless you have been there before and know the layout, you need to let the hotel know your needs when you book. Room numbers go by room type, floor and then room. So 141 means a Love Block, on the 4th floor, room 1.
The pool is fantastic. It is big enough not to feel crowded, cool without being cold or warm, has the most amazing infinity view I have ever seen, and you can swim up to the bar. Other reviewers have complained about lack of poolside seating, but I think there were only 1 or 2 occasions when all the sunbeds were occupied, and that was only for an hour or so in the morning.
Breakfast is table service for hot breakfast and self serve for all other items, with a good selection. Coffee is good and refills unlimited. I chose the iced coffee most days and my husband had lattes. I had to remember to order mine without sugar for the first time, and after that they always remembered my order. I think we only had one episode of the wrong order due to lack of English - my husband asked for bacon and got sausage instead. But it was always service with a smile (and lots of kahs) and the staff were always trying to do their best. The restaurant is like a covered verandah, with ceiling fans, and again the view is just amazing but obviously not air-conditioned as it is open. Each side of the resort is natural forest, so feels fresh and uncrowded and I really enjoyed this when eating in the restaurant - it feels a bit like a tree house in the jungle.
We tried out the cinema one day, just to have the experience. It is the same fabulous selection of movies as in the rooms but you get the big screen, bean bags and popcorn! We had it to ourselves, aside from the people popping their head in the door to take a peek and then going away again. It was fun... and more importantly, air-conditioned.
The owner-manager lives on site and is keen to help in every way he can. He believes free fast and reliable wifi is a must, and he keeps to his promise on that one! We rarely go back to a hotel twice, preferring to stay different places each time - but I think we will be back to Mantra! We even planted a tree in memory of our daughter, so definitely a place to go back to. I didn't really think there was that much to do on Koh Samui if you aren't into shopping and beaches, but I'd go back just for the rest at the hotel.
