“Funky Adorable Boutique Hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 31, 2013

We knew we were in for something special the minute we were seated in the reception area by the genuinely friendly staff. From the hotel room door keys which hung from little white ornamental birds on perches to their 'mascot' retro volkswagen kombi parked in the reception room. The quirkiness continues around the corner in the unisex bathroom where sensors detect that you wish to have your hands washed and water comes out of mock elephant trunks.

Smart looking young and vibey staff dressed in black skinnies and aqua golf shirts whizz you around in black golf carts to either your room or the pool or the private movie theatre or restaurant. There are also squash courts, a great gym, spa and children's dedicated play area. We chose the WOW room which was more than adequate with all mods and cons and an incredible view of the ocean. We enjoyed the cute touches, like recommended books selected specifically for us and left on our bed to the free phone calls from the room to anywhere in the world to Funky Dog (very cute stuffed toy dog) which you leave on your bed to indicate that you want your linen changed.

Very large fantastic pool overlooking the sea with a lovely water bar. Very relaxed atmosphere with great food and beautiful music always playing in the background. Nothing was too much to ask for. Shuttle services to Bophut Fisherman's Village and Chaweng always on time, comfortable and air conditioned. Amazing loungers, comfortable beds and pillows. We recommend this fabulous smaller hotel to anyone who enjoys a bit of humour in all the touches within beautiful pristine surrounds and away from the madness of the shops and beaches.

We could not leave without taking a piece of Mantra with us, so we purchased a Funky Dog and we requested the names of their music playlists to play at home.

Room Tip: If you choose a WOW room, then the number 300's are a good choice, highest up, great views and p...

Just spent 5 nights at Mantra as part of my honeymoon. Rooms were awesome, huge with some cool quirky, funky touches which are charming and help give Mantra it's unique character. Room 223 is perfect if you want to be close to the pool and restaurant, if you prefer privacy then other rooms would better suit. I loved 223. Spectacular views from all over the resort, pool area was a focal point. Efficient, helpful service was available 24 hours a day from the front desk and requests were handled immediately to my 100% satisfaction. Front desk staff organised everything from hire cars to zip lining tours without fuss, they are fantastic. Management was extremely responsive and helpful, which gave me the impression that Mantra truly cares about it's guests contentment and enjoyment. Thank you to GM Robert Meyer and his team. Robert himself replied to a general email I sent within 10 minutes, I was surprised and impressed! Restaurant food was very good which allowed us to stay in at times, rather than always make the trip into town. Bear in mind that the resort is isolated up the hill hence the great views. However the hotel provides plenty of complimentary shuttles into Bo Phut and Chaweng each day. Taxis charged 300bht back from Bo Phut if the shuttle schedule does not suit, which is an affordable AU$10. Chaweng a bit more.

Overall I would not hesitate to recommend Mantra Samui, I thoroughly enjoyed my stay there and would happily return.

Mantra Samui

Airport transfer - I would recommend booking a transfer with Mantra Samui instead of taking a taxi outside as it's cheaper.

Location - You won't reach the beach unless you rent a scooter (300bht/day) or take one of the free shuttles (roughly every hour). On the other side, you can enjoy a quiet resort and amazing views of Koh Samui and the surrounding islands. I would say location isn't a problem as the resort really is great :) and you can get picked up for the day trips.
The staff will pick you up anywhere anytime in golf trolleys if you don't feel like walking back to your room. They also often offer to drive you back when they see you walking around. I would suggest asking for a room near the pool/restaurant area if walking is a problem.

Room - we went for a Love room with jacuzzi on the terrace. What a great room! Very spacious and modern decor. Free use of computer in room with good speed (free wifi also). Amazing selection of movies and tv shows in English so you'll never get bored even if it's raining.
The room was cleaned to a very high standard daily.

Swimming pool - great infinity pool with amazing views. As per other reviews, it's best to wake up early if you want a lounger (before 8 at the latest). They have a new area with sun beds but not next to the pool.

Activities - great squash (they lend you the equipment for free) and game room (pool table, wii, scrabble..).

Food - breakfast, lunch, dinner everything was great. Some of the best food we have had in Thailand and reasonably priced (except buffet evening quite expensive). They make pizzas from scratch (490bht for 2) and have a great selection of delicious Thai food. They are due to open 2 more restaurants this year and they also have an exclusive option for up to 6 couples with tasting menu.

Service - staff was excellent from the reception to the restaurant.

I would recommend this hotel to couples, families and anyone who isn't looking for a beachside location :)

We booked the Love Jacuzzi Room and loved it. The view was amazing and breathtaking. There was a sunbed and jacuzzi for 2, overlooking the beautiful view, felt so serene and peaceful. The room was spacious, bed was soft and I liked that there was a seating area in the room too.

I wasn't loving the toilet as I had just come from another hotel where the toilet was gigantic. We had some issues with our shower though, it wouldn't stay warm for more than 10 seconds. It got either too hot or too cold. It's not a deal breaker though. In general, the toilet was still nicely furnished.

I love the little details that Mantra Samui pays attention to. Look out for those phrases on the roads, they are really cute. The breakfast was great too. They have Eggs Royale, Eggs Benedict, etc. Pancakes were AWESOME as well. <3

Other than these, great gym, free yoga lessons, movie theatre, swimming pool and restaurant over looking a beautiful view.

I guess people might have an issue regarding the location. If you want a beach side hotel, this is not it. But Bophut beach isn't much fun anyway. It looks great, but the sand is rough and it's pretty quiet. Fisherman's Village, on the other hand, was enjoyable. Be sure to check out the night market every Friday, loved the street food. The hotel provides shuttle services to Chaweng and Fisherman's Village too. If you are too late to catch the shuttle service back, you can always get a cab for 300 baht from Fisherman's Village back to the hotel. Chaweng would be slightly more pricey. But hey it's a vacation, you are expected to spend money.

The staff are very helpful and attentive as well. Loved the place overall and I highly highly highly recommend this place, especially for couples looking for a peaceful retreat.

Room Tip: Love Jacuzzi Rooms are recommended for couples.

The overall experience here is simply amazing, the location, the pool, the restaurant etc. However we faced a few minor issues perhaps to our bad luck which really took the joy out of our 4 day stay here. One morning we had booked an elephant safari thru the hotel, they told us our pick up would be at the reception by 12 noon. We had a late morning and just lazed till noon when it was time for our pick up. No car turned up till 1 pm.
On informing the hotel reception front desk lady , she called the tour company and they informed here that the car was full and that's why they never bothered coming to get us at Mantra.
We were so bummed ,having wasted our morning and half our day, we insisted the hotel make arrangements as the booking was done through them. At first they refused and saying we would have to pay for transfers which was included in the cost of the excursion but now it would be added. We were really annoyed at this attitude and told the lady that it was not our fault that the tour company mis managed and since the hotel made the booking they should know the kind of service being provided by tour companies. After wasting another hour, they fnally arranged a drof off at the excursion venue. That was a major disaster. The tour company staff were horrible and we hated every minute of our day.

The next blow came when that evening on there were no internet services at our room, we had to get in touch with friends who were meeting us later in Bangkok after a few days and we were unable because the internet did not work. On calling the reception at least 10 times and them sending 5 different so called professionals they could not figure out the problem and kept coming in our room at different times to check the problem but they could not solve it until the day we left. We were very out off by these events and somehow it managed to take the fun out of the stay.

Also on the second morning of our stay, the housekeeping had done a relatively shabby job and we had to tell the reception lady twice for the housekeeping to at least clean properly and replace the toiletries. We did not expect this sort of service from a hotel that has won awards and charges a good amount of money.

Having had these issues we would still give the hotel 4 stars for the top notch property and a different but interesting style and atmosphere, and the breakfast is just heavenly!!!

The staff at Mantra saved my life! I am so grateful to them.
I had a great time at the hotel - altough I traveled without my family I did not feel lonely. Bought lots of presents for my girls in Chaweng and I also found some cute stuff at Mantra's shop (behind reception). Birdie whistle-key chain; flip-flop magnets and mini flip-flops for my Dora.
I really did a lot of shopping for my family and I packed everything in my smaller luggage. I have a locket on this luggage mainly because it was a gift from my children. So I used it and I locked it. I had a late check-out so I decided to take a last dip in their divine pool and order a porn star martini.....
I said good-bye to the waiters, waitresses who were all extra kind to me through out my whole stay. They told me that next time I should bring my family along and I sure will!
And than it happened. I lost the key to the luggage containing all the precious things I bought for my wife and two girls. I cannot put in to words how kind the staff was. Eventually we found the key but that is not the real point. Mantra is exceptional. One has to see it to believe it!

Room Tip: I was alone so I booked a WOW room but got upgraded to the LOVE room. It was super to have the jacuz...

My partner and I recently spent 4 nights at the mantra in a love room. To start with the views for our room and the hotel generally are just breathtaking! The staff are also very friendly and helpful. The restaurant where breakfast is servd and the infinity pool at the top of the hotel are simply stunning and both offer and amazing view out to the ocean. The only negative aspects of the hotel was that the rooms did seem a little bit dated, chipped walls, tales etc.but given the great price and location we were easily able to overlook these tiny flaws. As other ppl have commented mantra is not walking distance to anything, you do need to catch a taxi or shuttle to get anywhere. To us this was both a positive and negative. The positive was that you were away from all the craziness and it was nice and peaceful. The negative is that you couldn't just go for a quick walk you had to either time it with shuttles or order taxi, which were about $10 Australian down to fishermans village. I understand the hotels recently increased the number of free shuttles it runs, however i still think there should be more in the evening to fishermans village, as the ones there are only at 4 and 8 and the last one back is 8.15. All in all I would recommend this hotel. Especially if you book early and online where you get free hotel pick up and a great rate.
