“It is not what we expected...”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 26, 2013

We booked a Love Room 6 month in advance and asked for a room on a higher floor with a nice view.

We directly came from Koh Tao. The hotel offers a free shuttle from the airport, but not from the ferry pier (which is only 5 km away...). So we came by our own.

They show us our room on the ground floor with a view on the roof from the reception and a power pole. hm, that is not what we expected. We spoke to the manager and they offered us an other room - in the late afternoon. This room was really better and had a nice view to the sea! Thanks to them!

Breakfast:
Everything you will need. They offer you eggs of any style and pancakes. The Cappuccino is great.

Lunch:
We were there one time. It is too expensive
Drinks too.
You better go to the Fishermen´s Village ( f.e. THe Hut , Ad hoc Beach Cafe, ...)

Pool:
There is really no possibility to get a sunbed. They have only 20 beds for 140 guests!!!! If you arrive in the morning at 9 am - every bed is blocked by person or towel. The pool is nice - but only for swimming and not relaxing??? That is not what we expected...

Fitness:
Here it is the same: only 2 treadmills, 1 Bike, 1 Elipsetrainer,.... For all these guests???? The TV-Screens are often out of work. That is not....

Rental Bike:
We took a Motorbike for 300 Bath/day. It´s more expensive than the offers in Bophut. But the way down to Bophut is approx. 30 minutes by foot. They only have old helmets and one size. For men it is too small. The tires were not full. We checked them at the next patrol station and filled them. Please check it before you use them for long distances. The street to the hotel is winding and in a bad condition. So only good drivers (who had experiences with bikes) should rent one!!!!

Transportation:
f.e. to Chaweng: they offer a free shuttle to Bophut and Chaweng. For us the times were bad. They go at 5 pm. to Chaweng and next time at 10 pm.. So we decided to rent the bike.

In total:
The staff is nice. Only a few people speak english.

If you have a room on a higher floor up to the hill: great view!
The rooms are nice too.

You need a motorbike to be flexible.

If you like to stay at the pool - stand up at 6 am to get a sunbed or book an other hotel.

We won´t come back.

Room Tip: 3. floor up to the hill

Dear TheGeorg,

Thank you very much for your review!

I am glad you have found our colleagues to be nice.

I am truly sorry that your expectations were not met but was happy to read that you loved our coffee.

We had to learn to understand that in order to be loved the overwhelming majority, our hotel will also have some Guests that would have had a better time at a different hotel.

Most fitness loving Guests praise our gym which is the largest of any hotel on the island and also includes two squash courts.

We help our Guests to rent bikes by connecting them to a local bike company and the bikes they bring - and the helmets they provide is beyond our control as they are a separate business.

Thank you again for taking the time and writing a review.

We stayed at the Mantra after recently spending a week in Fiji. To say this place was 100% better would be an understatement. The friendliness of the people was probably the same, but the resort itself, we couldnt have asked for anymore or any better! The atmosphere was a delight. We stayed in a WOW room and loved every minute. My sister made sure she told the resort we had married in Fiji, therefore this was our honeymoon. Our bed was covered in rose petals and the sheet made into a beautiful heart also scattered with flowers. OK, so the place is not on the beach, so if you want that, dont stay here. But given that, hire a scooter for approximately A$9 a day and have it at your finger tips and scoot to the beach!! I would recommend hiring the scooter from the resort, less stress that way, and when you are done with it, you are already at the resort!! The view from the room is amazing. If you are not an able body person or have young children I may not recommend this place to you simply due to the steep hills to get to your room. The golf buggy is generally always available, however the first time on this is quite scary due to the steep hill, but you do get used to it and is in no way a reason not to stay here. The pool and swim up bar are lovely, but would have to agree with some others, there isnt a lot of room to lie about, especially as people come and put a towel on the bed and walk away...this happens everywhere, there is no way to stop it. There was music by the pool and a lovely menu and coffee/latte to die for!! There is a complimentary drinks afternoon along with nibbles which is a nice touch. Would I go back, absolutely!!! You wouldnt be disappointed, and book on line early and you can received a MASSIVE discount!! Enjoy

Room Tip: To avoid the higher rooms, ask for rooms by the pool!!

Dear Weeza74,

Thank you very much for your kind review I am really glad we could WOW you and that we have exceeded your expectations.

I agree with you that scooter is the best - and also very economic way- to get around the island.
I am glad you enjoyed the atmosphere both in the hotel and at the pool and would very happily have you back with us!

This hotel´s management have had a good sense of what customers really want and need when they designed this place! Rooms are beautiful and spacious, pool is excellent, gym is superb (open 24 hours), breakfast is yummy (best croissants ever!). A good understanding of details! Only downside is the restaurant and room service: we tasted a lot of different foods and almost all of them was actually bad. Overall: enjoyable stay and best value for money at our 3-month trip in Thailand. Recommended.

We stayed here in Feb 2013 for 10 nights in a LOVE room. We were picked up by shuttle bus from the airport in Samui, and dropped off at reception, We had to wait 4 hrs for our room to be available and disapointingly not offered any complimentary beverages or food whilst we waited. besides that hicup the room had sensational views. This place definitely does have views to die for! We were half way up the hill, which was very steep, but created great excercise en route to breakfast which had even better views. The staff were extremely friendly, helpful and courteous.
The lack of shade around the pool area and lack of pool beds was disappointing and it was a matter of first in secured a sought after bed. Minor issues that would not stop us returning. With the addition of extra restaurants and sun area this can only add to the pleasure of staying at the Mantra. We will return!

Dear Spike25530,

Thank you very much for your review, it is very nice to read that you will return to us!
The check in time at Mantra is at 2 PM and if someone arrives in the morning and there is empty room before we surely provide it free of charge. At the time of your check in Mantra was operating at full capacity and therefore we could not offer this to you. If someone needs to wait longer than 2PM - our official check in time - we happily offer complimentary meals. According to our records - no one had a delay in check in - but if that was the case on your arrival, please let me know and I make sure to invite you to a dinner next time you visit us - feel free to write to me directly!
I am happy that you have enjoyed our views and found my colleagues to be friendly and courteous.

Thank you for your review once again and I am looking forward to have you with us again!

We stayed here in Jan 2013 for about 7 nights in a LOVE room. The shuttle picked us up from the airport in Samui, and after a quick check in we were escorted to our beautiful room. This place definitely does have views to die for! We were up on the hill, which was very steep, but not really an issue for us as we made use of the buggy which dropped us off right at the door!

Location wise, this is a little far from any beach (walking distance) - it's a gorgeous resort located about 5 mins from the main road up on hill. This wasn't really a problem for us, as we hired a scooter from the hotel to go and come as we pleased. There was also a shuttle service which went to Chaweng and Fishermans pier - although this is a little restrictive as you have to be ready at certain times.

Chaweng is about 15 mins by car/scooter and Fishermans Pier is about 10 mins, which is great if you want somewhere to walk around at night and have dinner etc.

The resort is 5 star (Thailand standards) but I think it's the little extra touches that make it special. The staff seem to enjoy what they do you see this as they all do generally go out of their way to make guests happy.

The gym and pool were also fantastic, with the amazing hilltop views..

Would absolutely go back :)

Easily one of the best hotels we have stayed at till date. I booked the COZY Mantra rooms after reading great reviews on Tripadvisor for the 4 of us - 2 couples. A shuttle picked us up from the airport and dropped us at the hotel reception. We were welcomed with refreshing welcome drinks and warm towels. We were transported to our room by an electric buggy. As we went higher up the hill, we got to see splendid views of the Bophut beach. The room surpassed our already high expectations. The antichamber has a lounge like bed to sit, relax and watch the ocean, a comfortable sofa, a computer and a modern table. The bedroom has a nice wardrobe and a huge and cozy bed. We absolutely loved getting up in the morning on this comfy bed and watching the sun rise over the sea - SO romantic! The bathroom is huge with a capital H. It has two basins which we really liked. The room has a balcony overlooking the pool and the Bophut beach. You can literally spend hours relaxing on the bean bags in the balcony. The infinity pool with bar access is superb. We spent hours in the pool on the first day and had a great time doing so. The restaurant is just besides the pool and provides breathtaking view of the sea. The breakfast at Mantra was the highlight of our trip. The croissants, the bread, the cakes, the cold cuts, the coffees - everything was delicious! Best continental breakfast ever!!
A special mention to the staff. The staff was extremely friendly, polite, cordial and helped us out in every way. Thumbs up, guys. You all were amazing!
All in all, an unforgettable stay at Mantra. I just wish our trip was a day longer so we that we could have just chilled at the hotel for a day! We love you, Mantra. Highly recommended!

P.S.: The hotel is quite far from the beach. Though it was not at all an issue for us. Some people might not like traveling 15-20 minutes to go to the beach. So be sure you are okay with it.

Room Tip: We stayed in COZY 221. I think it is the best room since it is close to the pool and the restaurant...

Could not recommend this place more highly. The Resort is five star all the way, but with a relaxed laid back feeling. The food is first class and the pool area and views are second to none.
The staff went out of there way to do everything for us and all with that big Thai smile.
The only slight down side is that the resort is a fair way from the beach (too far to walk) however there is a free shuttle that runs from the resort 3 or 4 times a day.
Will visit again.
