During our stay at Koh Samui, we were lucky to have arrived during the Koh Samui Fine Dining Festival (September and October), so we made it our mission to eat at as many fine dining establishments as possible!
We selected Dining on the Rocks, as it had fantastic reviews in all the brochures, and I am glad we did, as the entire experience was amazing! We booked for a 7pm sitting (silly of us, we should have booked earlier to get the full benefit of their beautiful location - perched high on the rocks overlooking the beautiful views of the ocean. We didn't realise the sun went down so early in Thailand!)
We arrived to the resort, and were taken to the restaurant in a gold cart, where they seated us outside on the deck (very romantic and beautiful). Having already seen the Fine Dining Festival menu, we had already decided on what to eat (5 courses with matching wines, and was definately enough food!) They do offer other degustation menus, which all sounded amazing - I don't think you will be dissapointed regardless of what menu you choose.
The food was just perfect. Even food I do not normally eat, I found just amazing. Their chef is wonderful, they better not lose him! Each course came out as a little surprise - we really did not know what to expect next, but with each mouthful came another little culinary delight. I really didn't think it could keep getting better, until they bought the lamb out ... WOW! And then to top it off with the most amazing dessert; this restaurant really has something special, worth holding on to! The wines were perfectally matched with the dishes (even the port with dessert, which I don't normally drink!)
The service was good, and staff were very friendly and helpful. We had two servers (one for wine and one for food), and they were always very professional. I would say our one negative aspect of the entire experience would be the wait time between courses; it was far too long in between. We arrived at 7pm, and did not leave until 11pm, quite late considering we only had 5 courses. This could have been because it was a Saturday night and the restaurant was full, but that was the one thing that we were not happy about.
The head chef came out just before our dessert to talk to us and to ask how our meal was. I thought this was a great thing for him to do; getting to meet the chef, and give feedback directly to him about the meals he creates, is always quite special.
At around 4000THB per person, it was expensive compared to other fine dining restaurants we had eaten at, but for the quality of food, I would say it was well worth it, and you would expect to pay that amount for a unique experience that is Dining on the Rocks.
Our one reccommendation, if you are planning to dine here, would be to book earlier so you can get the full benefit of the beautiful views and location (lunch time would even be good). Your wallet will be much lighter, but you will have a full belly, and will be very satisfied with the quality of food, wine and service recieved. Next time I am in Koh Samui, I will definately be back for more!
