“Wonderful hotel overall...”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 8, 2013

I emailed the hotel twice the week before we stayed seeking costs of upgrade to half board or all inclusive. Nothing received back. On arrival it was apparant that our room had been changed and we were sent to the other building across the walkway. It overlooks the road and the main hotel is between you and the sea. We were three and then find no third bed was evident at all?
Back to reception as we were also concerned that our 'one bedroom apartment' did not have the sea view we had expected. We were then given a ground floor room immediately next to the reception area, it was okay and had a view toward the sea but i got the impression the all inclusive and groups take preference. I am still confused as to how a ''one bedroom apartment' is actually an apartment with no seperate bedroom at all. As a result my 18 year old daughter had to sleep in the room with us in a creeky fold up bed more suited to a younger child. (I had honestly expected a separate bedroom and my daughter on a bed settee or suchlike in the apartment area)?
We went with the flow because we simply do not believe that you should ever be put into the position of having the 'wrong' room, not as described, and having to keep seeking another. Its a pain.
The hotel also has no free parking and direct you to a car park across from the main hotel at 7+ Euros a day providing a barcoded tag after you have agreed payment. I had a hire car and was able to park about 200 metres east of the hotel for nothing every night?
The wi-fi always seems to be a constant complaint and although i am not greatly interested it does seem very strange that the hotel does not address the issue. They have one computer available for free. If you walk along the marina next to the hotel you will find a number of restaurants who do provide free wi-fi although very slow.
We ate in the buffet restaurant on two nights and it was very good, breakfast each day was very good. The al a carte restaurant adjoining the hotel was also very pleasant to visit for dinner.
We did not have the best of weather last week so the hire car was a great benefit and should be seriously considered anyway because many places in the area are worth a visit, we did the whole West of the island and Funchal and were glad we did.
The hotel staff were very good, reception, dining room, pool area, bars. Very friendly and helpful.
We liked the hotel, it is very modern and has everything. The room issue can be resolved by a more precise description on the hotels website and its photographs. Is it a 'one bedroom apartment' or is it a 'one bed apartment', it is not both. I have given a 'very good' but would have given an 'excellent' if we got what they describe.

Room Tip: Make sure you see it and you are happy as some rooms are debatable on description alone.

This can be a bit tricky to go to Madeira in January and expect sunny beach weather. But thanks to hotel’s location in south part we had no cloudy days or rain, the temperature varied from 22˚C - 27˚C during the day.
We went All Inclusive. Food and drinks were excellent, every day different, exotic salads, various meat and fish, local cheese, tasty fruits and fresh vegetables.
We were quite happy with entertainment; every evening from 19:30 till 23:00 there was different events going on downstairs in the lobby sometimes out by the pool: parrot shows, magic shows, solo singers, music groups and dancers.
Hotel atmosphere is relaxing, friendly and peaceful. “Madeira is a perfect place for just married or almost dead :D”, I heard this joke from our senior next-door neighbours. And that is true, winter in Madeira = summer in UK, so it isn’t hot and it isn’t cold. In my observation all hotel guests could be divided in two groups: 80% seniors, 20% young families. For someone who expects parties all night long, this is not a right place.
Hotel is wonderful itself, but there is not much what to do around the hotel. There is nice supermarket across the road, harbour, it is possible to arrange boat and fishing trips, one or two seafood restaurants, beach and sugar cane factory up the hill and in fact that is all.
But there is many more activities what to do in Madeira: surfing, walks, hiking and many more. Hotel organizes some trips, the nearest trips are free. Many points of interest were too far from the hotel.
Taxi transfer from airport to hotel and back was around 130-140 euro. Often taxi is the only option, public transport runs very rarely. Also transfer to Funchal was for extra charge.
Next time I would choose the same hotel, but probably I would rent a car.

Somehow my booking didn't get through, despite emailing them three times. It's unclear if this was the fault of the hotel reservation office or the booking agency. Anyway, the receptionist handled this perfectly. No ocean view room was available, in return I got a free buffet, free parking and a bottle of sparkling wine. Without asking. Best way to solve this problem, compliments to the receptionist.

Biggest problem was: no internet. It was broken for a week apparently. There was only one working computer. Otherwise everything was fine. Parking requires some driving skills, as the turns are very sharp. The pool area is very nice, both sunny places and hideaways from the ever present breeze. This is the only place in Madeira with a sandy beach. It's enclosed in concrete to avoid it being washed away. The pool is nicer in many ways.

Buffet was OK, the salads are very nice, limited choice of fish and meat dishes. Entertainment in the evening (life music) was nice. The "mountain view" rooms are really that, you look at the one mountain behind the hotel. Or the building with the supermarket on the lower floors. That's the biggest supermarket I have been to in Madeira. If it weren't for the dried fish on sale (smelly!!!) it would be perfect.

There isn't much else to do around, you can walk the boulevard or walk to Calheta town. Everything else is up a steep mountain road.

Room Tip: Definitely ocean view, it's worth the extra money.

Just arrived home after having a holiday in Madeira, Portugal.
The hotel Calheta Beach is the best hotel that I and my friend have ever stayed in.
From the moment we booked in, to the day we left, we were made to feel welcome and wanted.
We had lovely clean spacious rooms with sea view and lovely big balcony. Felt like heaven. Very quiet and peaceful during the whole holiday. No discos at night, total bliss. First holiday we have had for years in Europe without banging discos all night, and a proper nights sleep every night without banging doors and late night revellers in corridors. HEAVEN.
The hotel boasts a beautiful pool area and gardens with pleasant bar staff and peace and quiet.
The reception staff are very helpful and contented, and will do anything to help their guests. All the staff in the hotel are great with a lovely smile. The restaraunt is spacious and very clean, and the food is of a very high standard, (buffet style) and there is always a choice of something to suit everyone.
You can get trips to Funchal which is the city of Madeira, its about 40minutes from Calheta, and you can get there by public bus from outside the hotel, but they dont run very often. you can go by hotel private bus for 17.50 euros return. You can have a good seven hours in Funchal. Mini bus drops and picks up at the park gardens in Funchal. Its worth the trip. Plenty shops in the tourist area, but smokers beware!
Any one looking to bring home ciggarettes, shops in Madeira donot take credit or debit cards. Its cash only. Ciggs are around 39 to 40 euros per 200 pack depending on brand.
If anyone is looking for a good quiet peaceful clean hotel 4* with good food, then this is the one for you.
Entertainment in hotel calheta is very good. Varied entertainment starts around 7.30pm - around 11pm, which in our view is great, as it allows those who want an early night to wake refreshed the next day.
We recommend this hotel mainly for people wanting a good quiet relaxing holiday.
There is also a good sandy beach in front of the hotel. Calheta is a quiet area with nothing much to do, but you can get out and about, by booking the hotel mini bus to various places or public bus.
We will certainly be going back to Calheta beach hotel, Good value for money, and we recommend it to you if you just want to lap up the sun. Go for it!

After a trip that saw us late leaving UK and an aborted landing, we arrived at hotel 15 minutes after they finished lunch. Told nothing available, but snacks were available from pool bar. OK, take bags to room and only one very soft pillow each. Went down for snack only to be told that snacks weren't included in All Inclusive (AI) - always had been everywhere else we stayed - but free snacks were available at tea time, just when we had our welcome meeting! Ordered extra pillows but despite numerous reminders took 3.5 hours for them to be delivered, so missed our afternoon catch up nap after a long day. During this period we did our discovery walk, only to find a rather run down marina area. Air conditioning didn't work but told it was too early in season, even though it is advertised. They did offer to change our room, but the new one only had a walk-in shower, so we stayed where we were (something to request if you like a bath!).
However, none of these things mattered by the time we left. It turned out to be one of our best holidays. The staff were all amazing, speaking excellent English, and all had a sense of humour -best staff we have come across in all our years of travelling. There was no loud music around the pool, just nice gentle background music and the same in the evenings, small groups (special mention to The Grumpies - brilliant group, could've listened to them every night!) and specialist dancers, ranging from latin American to Calheta folk group. All the guests were friendly too, whatever language you spoke!
There is a supermarket which stocks nearly everything and a pharmacy just across the road and a few restaurants around the marina area. There is a bus service (not sure how regular but only week days) and a taxi rank opposite hotel entrance. Although the hotel runs a bus service to Funchal (17.50 euros each return) we took one of the local taxis (40 euros each way). They ran a good service whereby you were given a business card by the driver and you phoned him when you were ready to be collected, so you could spend however much time you wanted - either longer or shorter than the minibus. The hotel also put on a couple of free trips, you need to put your name down early, as there is a maximum capacity. If you can get a group together (which we weren't able) several people went on a trip with Nelson (he's well known locally!!!) and for 120 euros he will take you round half the island in a day with various stops, so if you can get 6 people, that's a bargain at 20 euros each. Plus he lived in the UK for several years and speaks excellent English.
Breakfast was very good (but no fresh omlettes :-( which my husband loves), lunch and dinner were ok if you liked salads. But the hotel has a good deal going with their a la carte restaurant next door. If you wish to eat there, you can get a voucher for 13 euros per person towards the cost of dinner, but you need to obtain this the day before you wish to eat. We ate there 3 times as the food was excellent. The prawns in Madeira wine were out of this world, as was the baked stone steak. For a local dish - if you like fish - the black scabbard fish with banana was delicious. They also do pizzas. You have to pay full price for drinks, but certainly worth a visit early on to see if you prefer eating in there.
Limited choice of drinks in AI - just one cocktail of the day and no local liqueurs. Their rum is not the same as Bacardi and has an acquired taste which we didn't get! Brandy and coke was good! AI finished at 10pm, so you can imagine a lot of people left early, so it was nice and quiet!
Also, ice creams are available in the pool area, but there is a charge of 1.5 euros - again usually included in AI.
But all said and done, we had a superb relaxing holiday and if that's all you are looking for I wouldn't hesitate to recommend the hotel. They are building another hotel at the other end of the marina and when the area is finished it will be a smart little area. I am sure we will be back when we want our batteries recharged.

Room Tip: We were on the 5th floor (top floor) bedroom and paid for a sea view which was worth the extra fee...

Just had a great week here, quiet, relaxing, friendly staff. All inclusive was great value. Food very good, used allocation against a la carte on the final night, which again was excellent. Rooms and all areas, were spotless.
Entertainment was good each night, unlike some at hotels we have been to in the past.

The hotel is in a quiet area, you need to go to Funchal for shopping or nightlife. However as somewhere to stay for peace and quiet it was great.

Wifi or internet access was not available at all during the stay which was a pain and despite this being available in the business centre. Here you could use their computer for free but there was only one, which was a nuisance at times. I may be wrong but got the feeling that not a lot was done about the wifi, and looking at the bulk of the clientele I doubt it is in big demand. We had to go to a cafe in the marina to access wifi which my husband needed for work.

Room Tip: Ask for south facing room to get the sun on yor balcony. Some of these will be sea view and others...

Enjoyed our week here, despite having very mixed weather. The staff were courteous and efficient, and we were lucky enough to get an upgrade on arrival to a suite of rooms. The all inclusive package proved excellent value, with decent food and plenty of choice. As a beer drinker i wasn't too impressed with the local coral lager but found the bottled coral dark beer very agreeable.
To burn up the the calories we made use of the gym, sauna and steam room.
We went on the 2 free trips from the hotel : the first, up in the hills to the village of Prazeres wasn't particularly interesting, you can walk a section of a levada, there is a small animal farm and a couple of good, cafes, but that's it. The second trip was much better, to the seaside village of Jardim Do Mar, which has a very pleasant promenade to stroll along, and Joe's Bar with a nice outside garden terrace. There is a signposted levada close to Joe's Bar which takes a winding route up the cliff face giving spectacular views but only for the sure-footed.
As we were a party of 4, we decided to hire out a taxi on 2 days to see something of the island and Funchal, as there isn't a lot to do at Calheta. That said, a visit to the nearby rum & sugar cane factory is worthwhile ( though production doesn't start till April) the sample room/cafe is open and gives you the chance to try the sweet sugar cane juice, followed by the jaw-dropping strong rums and Madeira cake (the best we had on the island). We carried on up the steep road to the art-gallery, perched on the cliff top (which resembled two concrete bunkers when viewed from the hotel) There is a good cafe which serves up freshly squeezed orange juice;wonderfully refreshing after the walk up.
Evening entertainment was varied from cringeworthy to excellent - the Latin Dancers were superb, and worked so hard.
Only real criticism was the hard bed, which took some getting used to.
All in all this is an ideal hotel for a quiete, relaxing break, with options to get out sight see.
