Description: Douro is river, villages and suspended vineyards on imposing slopes. It's wine with designation of origin but also D.O.C, Taste of Certified Origins. It was based on this analogy that, in 2007, the DOC restaurant was born. Situated in Folgosa, Armamar, on the road between Regua and Pinhao, in what is one of the most beautiful scenic routes in the country, the restaurant occupies a building of contemporary lines with a picket based that extends along an elegant wooden deck overlooking the river. Designed by the architect Michael Scott, the structure also includes a river dock with capacity for 15 boats, a wine cellar and a car park.
It's a place of enormous beauty, blending the grandeur of the vineyard covered mountains and the serenity of the Douro river and the riverside villages, only awakened by the regular passage of the train. DOC serves as a window on this breathtaking scenery, making every meal a unique and special moment. Since it opened, the restaurant has been the target of a growing recognition of press and public. David Lopes Ramos, the 'Publico' renowned food critic, thus referring to DOC, in an article published in the 'Fugas' supplement: "DOC is a unique case, because, alone, made the Douro kitchen Douro sophisticated and creative in a level previously unknown. This in Douro, our most prestigious wine region. "

“Wednesday night ”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 11, 2014

Sat outside , beautiful evening.
They catered very well for our party all couples. Very good menu and excellent wines.
Cocktail of white port and tonic water to start the evening. Very impressed with their steak.
Overall would live to go again.

“Underwhelming”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed June 2, 2014

With all wonderful reviews we expected much more.

We arrived to a relatively empty restaurant with staff ready to serve. The night started with a gift from the chef, a pork salad burger for me and a salmon one for my wife. It was a nice gesture, but both were dry and under seasoned.

We shared a scallop carpaccio with truffle oil and mushrooms. The scallop was fresh but the whole dish had one note - truffle oil.

My main was slow cooked pork neck, soft but again under seasoned, it just ended up tasting bland and fatty. My wife had a cod fish with a hazelnut purée. She said the dish was ok but the hazelnuts gave it a bitter flavor. We didn't risk the dessert.

Overall nice staff and a pretty location, the food is underwhelming and under seasoned. There were a lot of purée components, which were just not great or creative. The price was high and the value low. Lack of surrounding competition seems to be the driving force of all the hype.

Not terrible but not worth it.

“Lunch with Douro Exclusive Tour”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 1, 2014

As part of our Douro Exclusive package, we stopped at DOC for lunch. Lovely location overlooking the Douro River. Our lunch was very good with Portuguese food taken up a notch. Each serving was paired beautifully with a nice Port or Wine. While the food was very good, the service was beyond excellent and would rival any Michelin starred restaurant. The serving staff were attentive & very professional but also very engaging. Excellent work ethic in a country that has struggled the past few years. Most impressive!! If I could give it 6 stars, I would!!

“Best "fancy" food in the Douro”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 28, 2014

It's not been an easy few years for high-end places in Portugal, and even less so for the likes of the Douro, which takes real commitment to get to. However, this place is worth it and could hold it's own against some of the worlds best (I know I've eaten in them!). Chef Rui Paula is somewhat of a legend in these parts, a true local boy that "done good". He has applied his international training and global experiences to local and Portuguese dishes. Don't go there expecting a tasting menu that is part performance art, part food - go there expecting to taste exquisitely refined versions of Portuguese (inspired) dishes. The service is excellent, courteous and they are accomodating to any dietary needs. My final piece of advice, is that unless you know Portuguese wines well, and are prepared to compromise, take the tasting menu with paired wines and you will be in for a treat

“More performance than substance”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 27, 2014

We had high expectations of this restaurant but the food was disappointing, overpriced and not outstanding in any way. Portions were small and we were particularly disgusted to be charged 11 euros for tap water. Presentation was pretentious but the food simply didn't stand up to it. Staff were overattentive. We must admit that we didn't see the restaurant at its best, as it was a wet night and the restaurant was half-empty, but unfortunately that had the effect of concentrating our minds on the quality of the food.
