The Orchid Tree is a quiet little B&B, perfect for relaxing and dipping your toes into the Costa Rica lifestyle. The owners do a great job mixing Latin and North American customs, so you get the feel of being in a foreign country without being overwhelmed. The facility is very clean and stylish, with lots of fruit trees and flowers, and it is very safe. It is hidden within a residential neighborhood, so there isn't a lot of traffic or noise in that area.
The owners provide a great breakfast, with locally grown produce and meat. The pineapple alone is worth the trip! In addition to their cooking skills, Pat and Brad were very helpful with advice about the area and local customs, and assisted us with securing transportation and finding tourist sites and restaurants.
There is a small town within walking distance from the hotel, but you'll definitely need a taxi or rental car to get everywhere else. The taxis to Atenas are only a few dollars, and Brad can give you phone numbers to some of the more trusted drivers. I used the same guy several times, and he was very punctual and friendly. We also rented a car and went to some Pacific beaches and the Poas Volcano, and both trips were fairly convenient from this location.
Overall, it was a great experience.
