Following our previous trip to The Laguna in Crete, another Mitsis hotel, we booked this supposed 5 star hotel in expectation of a similar experience.
Sadly the expectation was not matched by reality. Had we wanted to visit a tired 3 star hotel with a restaurant serving food of equal quality, we would have booked that. However 5 star should be used to indicate a level of comfort and luxury which the Village simply doesn't possess.
Mitsis are really doing themselves no favours by allocating such an unrealistic billing, only for guests to be left disappointed. Not just my opinion, but one shared by everybody with whom we spoke whilst there.
Not withstanding the disappointment with the overall standard, I can say that once settled into the hotel it is still possible to have an enjoyable stay. The rooms were very clean, as were most areas of the hotel.
Our first room number 715 was above a noisy generator, we also had only one light fitting, but no bulb in the main room. No bedside lamps either so not an ideal start. On day two we were transferred to room 926, which is in, what seems to be a newer block. The view from the room was very good, we were also pleasantly surprised to find that we had a bulb in the main room light and only one of the bedside lamps had a missing bulb.
The beds are horribly hard. Not suitable for anybody who is accustomed to a decent mattress at home. We asked for and received mattress toppers, which made sleeping a possibility.
Once we managed to persuade somebody to do something about the air conditioning unit cover on the flat roof above us, which was constantly banging with the wind, we finally enjoyed our break. That took 2 visits to Reception, the second at 1700 reminding them of the need for something to be done before bedtime. When bedtime arrived the problem continued so we telephoned. Thirty minutes later still no action, this resulted in 'She The Enforcer' making an angry call, which finally yielded a result. From this point onwards we started to unwind an enjoy the rest of the break.
The primary failing at this hotel, when compared with Laguna, is the absence of visible management. After 10 days, we still had no idea who the managers were. Perhaps they doubled as Reception staff, perhaps they preferred to stay in the background. In our experience, 5 star is defined by high standards in every area. Without a firm hand, the standards quickly slip towards that which suits the staff on duty. With staff working without a day off in 6 months, it will be extremely difficult for them to remain self-motivated for the duration.
The Health & Safety man who visited clearly didn't look too closely at the cracked glass above the indoor swimming pool. Several panes are damaged. I'm no expert on these things, but I am extremely worried about how gravity may affect so much weakened glass. If the worst happens, we will just have to hope that nobody is underneath. On a similar theme, the bar staff are serving drinks to very young children in glasses, rather than plastic cups. Perhaps I'm being over sensitive, but should what I estimate to be 6 year olds be walking around with glasses?
The Mitsis website advertises a free to use Jacuzzi and Sauna. We found the Sauna cabin downstairs. It appears unlikely that this will ever be used again. The Jacuzzi seems to have been spirited away and its presence erased from the memory of the staff, i.e. it isn't there!!
Finally, the food. It is difficult to be over critical when a hotel is catering for 500 multi national guests. So I'm not going to say much more than... its ok. If you take food from a freshly laid out tray it will be hot. If a tray has been left out for a while it will be cold. Timing is the trick here. Or of course salad. We decided to take an evening away from the dining room and ate at Il Ponte, which is situated on the beach road between Maris and Princess hotels. Absolutely fantastic food and Anastasios' warm welcome and excellent English ensured that it was the best evening of our stay.
In summary, don't go in expectation of anything more than a decent 3 star and you will be contented.
