Fairwood Guest House is one of those hidden gems that you stumble upon every now and again. I find booking over the internet is always hit and miss. Pictures look great, but only when you really arrive do you know if you have struck lucky. In this case, it was a major strike and I was lucky enough to spend 8 days there during my last vacation. I had originally planned to move on after 5 days!
The guest house is a large modern building (by European standards) with tinted glass windows and warm yellow concrete façade. It is situated in La Lucia, about 20 minutes from Durban International Airport, 10 minutes from Durban Central, 5 minutes from Umhlanga and 7 minutes from the Gateway centre. The guest house is 2 minutes from La Lucia Mall and 5 minutes from the nearest beach.
The guest house is stylishly decorated throughout. There are 5 guest rooms in total, one of which is the extremely classy Penthouse Suite (more about that soon!) All guest rooms feel inviting and are very comfortable. Some rooms boast larger bathrooms than others. All rooms have aircon and a decent sized plasma TV with a good selection of TV channels which adds to that feeling of comfort/luxury.
The main part of my stay was spent in the fabulous "Penthouse" suite, located at the upper rear part of the building. The suite which itself has 2 levels has direct access to the terrace where there is a pond with rather large carp fish! The upper and main level of the Penthouse suite is exclusively decorated and is almost completely surrounded by glass which gives a spectacular view of the coast overlooking La Lucia Mall. The ceiling also has a sky light which at night gives you a great view of the stars. The room has all the afore mentioned mod-cons but unlike other rooms also has an integrated surround sound system linked to the rather large plasma TV! The bed is spacious and extremely comfortable. The lower level of the Penthouse suite accommodates the large bathroom consisting of bath tub and separate shower which can easily accommodate 2 people if needed! From the Penthouse suite you can also directly access the pool area which is located yet another level up and boasts a good sized pool and again I have to mention that fantastic view of the coast line.
Breakfast is served until 10am. As you would expect from a guest house that focuses on quality, it was large and bountiful. A mixture of traditional fruits and cereals and a cooked English style breakfast. To add a little variety I tried the omelette which is more than a breakfast, lunch and dinner in itself!
The Guest House is one of several owned and managed by Linda Munthree. Linda is not your typical guest house owner out to make a quick buck - rather she is an extremely welcoming and friendly person who takes a genuine interest in ensuring that her guests are not left wanting anything. Its is clear that Linda takes much pride in the service, presentation and comfort of the guest house.
As can happen, holidays can be fraught with the unexpected. I had the misfortune for having a puncture which almost left me stranded - had it not been for Linda!. Linda, its seems is very well connected locally and if she doesn't know, it seems she knows somebody who always knows somebody! Linda personally took time out to make good use of her network and help find a tyre repair centre - on a Sunday afternoon!. Within 1 hour I was fixed and back on the road again! It goes without saying that not everyone is always so willing to help
All in all I had a fantastic stay and it was a real struggle to leave. Linda and the team at the guest house were fantastic and I can highly recommend the guest house to anyone who is looking for comfort, modern luxury at an affordable price!
